As a Brazilian person, I backed Japan to beat Croacia in the 2022 World Cup first knockout round. Very arrogantly I thought Brazil had a good chance to beat both teams. In reality, we would have struggled/conceded against both sides. Besides, in retrospect, Croacia had more experience going deep in international competitions and in penalty shootouts than the Japanese or even the Brazilian squad. Edit: I went on a rant 😂 But I meant to say that Vietnam seems to have been improving massively in the last few years. Hopefully, they can start making out of groups in this Asian Cup and springboard that into maybe start making into World Cups with the format change. This way Maxwell won’t have to suffer 😅

Park Hang-seo gave us a few years of glory but finish his term with a team past their prime, used to play in a system that was well-researched by pretty much everyone and barely change during the last years, and some career ruined because of the overuse of painkiller (RIP Dinh Trong’s hamstrings). Not to disregard Park Hang-seo, he’s a legend, but he has put whoever is gonna take over Vietnam national team in a very hard position. Troussier came to Vietnam with a new approach of football, and undergo a reform in the national team. Dinh Bac would never got a chance for Vietnam under Park Hang-seo, but Troussier is willing to give youngsters chance. I still have opposition to his overdose experiment with youngsters and some use of players, but if the team is doing well, who am I to judge him? Sure we have bad results prior to Asian Cup, but that’s to be expected when you want to make a team play in a passive style to actually try to move the ball forward. It’s still too soon to say if Troussier will have any success with Vietnam, but at least he actually want to make changes. He won’t be safe should we fail to qualify to the knockout and the next round of World Cup qualifiers though, but VFF is playing a long game and I’m with them and Troussier. He is laying a strong foundation for greater success.

They weren’t allowed to play offensively all the time due to their limits, but scoring two is fantastic already. Of course it would have been greater if it was 2-3, but 2-4 is already above expectations, so… why not?
