This one is aging like fine milk. The so-called proprietary “stainless steel” is even ferro magnetic. See Tesla warnings re: bugs, bird poop, and road salt (also consider coastal environments). So, if you live up north, or down in Florida, you’re expected to wash your car DAILY, in freezing weather… (and all year long, in coastal areas)!

You can not scratch the middle of a wrapped door without damaging the wrap. That hole in the wrap will let plenty of oxygen through. And without oxygen, you can't have rust either, so that works as well. Not worried about this.
@fermgonz6167
@fermgonz6167 11 ай бұрын
One invalid argument here, you need oxygen for rust so you can't say wraps and other coatings will prevent oxygen from creating the chrome oxide as if that was true, you wouldn't get rust. Rust on stainless steel is about chemicals. Anyways, have you seen a Delorean restoration? The stainless steel looks as good as when it came off the showroom floor.
@MultiLegman

The argument is still valid - it's about what happens if a wrap isn't absolutely perfect (i.e. holes or peeling). This will trap chemicals and moisture right up against the surface and absolutely expedite corrosion

If the cyber truck is made of the same steel as the rockets at SpaceX, no it won’t rust in any normal use. The hyper saline body of water that SpaceX is next to has a way of destroying things. Those rockets and hopper looks great some have been outside for years now. 304 stainless steal vs 316 stainless is night and day down here (304 rusts fast, 316 takes a bit). Going beyond 316 to something like 2025 duplex steel is really the only commercially available steel to normal people that doesn’t really rust on this body of water. My point is that not all stainless steels are equal.

A fair point, but the spaceX stainless is not subject to the harsh environment of a winter road. 304 stainless (which I use in our brewery) does need easy regular maintenance to prevent corrosion). Just FYI, TONS of stainless products are covered/painted, etc -- Oxygen starvation is not really a part of the discussion in the industry. The bigger issue is galvanic corrosion, and corrosive solvents being trapped in proximity with no evaporation path. We have 2 SS water trucks, no rust unless a piece of rusty carbon steel is in contact with it. these trucks have large vinyl decals on the sides. The decals have been slowly coming off, and under the decals it is like-new shiny. Wrapping will NOT cause corrosion. For cleaning we just wash with a brush and soap. You might want to buff it every 20 years of so. Also, it does dent, the bumpers are 5mm SS and someone backed it into a steel pole-dented. The side skirts are 4mm and have slight scratches from somebody... scrapping fence posts.

When I was designing stainless steel equipment the the type of stainless and the environment was extremely important to determine staining and possible failure. 316 SS is impervious to most environments where others look so rusty you would think it was unprotected steel! The difference is that the rust doesn’t penetrate! You are Not correct in stating that if the surface of most SS is scratched the protection is lost. The protection reforms extremely quickly. I think you we’re getting confused with a function common to some grades of SS called Stress Corrosion Cracking where a component can fail very quickly if the wrong grade is used in a high stress corrosive environment!

Corrosion is a very complex topic. I am an engineer who has worked solely to protect equipment on very large oil and gas projects during the years prior to their operation following their installation, while ocean proximity. Stainless steel protection is technical. There is no worse an enemy to stainless steel than carbon steel. If carbon steel specks or bigger get on the stainless, it will have accelerated pin point galvanic corrosion. What happens is when dissimilar metals come in contact one will readily corrode and actually thereby protect from corrosion the other. Between stainless and Carbon steels, stainless losses big time! Important take away - washing stainless regularly is important. Specs of carbon steel will burn holes in stainless steel quickly, depending on the environment it is in.

I am an expert on stainless steel. Salt will prevent a correct buildup of the thin protective layer. Salt is one of the main enemies for stainless steel. The speed of the build up is very dependent on humidity. At very low humidity it can take hours and at high humidity less than a second. Salt is ok for some time, but it has to be washed later thoroughly. If you wrap, it has to be cleaned very thoroughly before! No finger stains because of salt! If you have corrosion, react immediately, do not wait, it will always get worse! Polish the rust away and use acid (no hypochloric acid) like phosphoric acid for deeper cleaning. Porsche build a stainless steel Porsche in the 70´s. After the first winter it was heavily corroded. It was prepared and is now standing in the German Technology Museum in Munich. Don’t know if is still there, but 20 years ago it was there. I can’t imagine that there will be no corrosion problem with the Cybertruck. It depends on which alloy Tesla uses. So take some care in winter with salt! Citrisurf is quite good. We are using it, Might have to use multiple times. The passive layer is destroyed in the second it becomes scratched, dirt or salt will prevent a strong rebuild of the passive layer. Corrosion on stainless steel happens quickly, it only takes a couple of weeks, if the conditions are bad. If you don’t have it for a long time (at least one winter), you will never get it, if treatment doesn’t change.

So let me get this right. Oxygen is required to form the chromium oxide protective layer right? And oxygen is also required to form rust (aka. "oxidation") right? So the concern is that if a wrapped vehicle got a scratch, there might not be enough air exposure under the wrap for the chromium-oxide layer to form over the scratch, but there could be enough air/water exposure for rust to form. Does oxidation require less air exposure than the instantaneous, micron-thin, chromium oxide reaction? Does the chromium oxide formation not work with water but rust does? Am I missing something or are some people (including me) failing their critical-thinking-saving-throw?
@mikapeltokorpi7671

The Tesla lead engineer said that you can use Scotts Brite to even out the scratches. So those do not have that high hardness. Bird poop and bugs are acidic. Chromium can slow the speed, but when you have a corroded surface, it has different coarseness. Which will be easily detected by anyone's eyes. You can never match the couple of years old weathered panels with the new panels (you have to buff all the panels to even try to reach visually similar results on all of those - a highly skilled job on this kind of surfaces). If you trap moisture inside wrap it will be worse to the stainless steel. The wrap keeps good for 6 to 12 months.

You bought the Cybertruck now you have to live with it. For a start most of the truck is stainless, plastic and some cast parts. Most of the exterior is stainless, yes stainless likes some maintenance, you want to maintain its passive layer if you are going to drive t around. For example refrigerators last long as long as they are not on the road. Any stainless exposed to rain, salt or elements even dirt will in the presence of moisture begin to form some corrosion product such as rust. Stainless steel specially the 300 non magnetic are pretty much corrosion resistant as long as the surface chromium oxide is not disturbed. Not sure if the Tesla truck is 300 or 400 stainless, a magnet can tell... some people say its series 300 (austenitic) and others say its Magnetic. Keep also in mind that stainless steel is about 55% Iron which will form Iron-oxide when exposed due to the passive chromium oxide breaking. Not that is on the scratching, there could also be crevice corrosion due to small holes or tight areas formed by bolts and washers, galvanic corrosion by non stainless materials interface materials or washers, pitting corrosion formed by Chlorides(salt) and digging holes into the metal or intergranular corrosion due to hard rolling of the grains creating high stresses area. In short, yes it will form oxides and corrode... you just need to keep ahead of the corrosion propensity. BTW, corrosion would be the least of my worries with the CyberTruck 😉

If Tesla uses 304L stainless steel should not rust. I have a Rec-Tec BBQ grill with no rust in 2 years and it is 304L.

I live in Scandinavia, here we have many months with snow and ice and salt My tesla 3 model year 2019 I have learned the hard way is not made for this climate to take some things the handles freeze so I can't get into the car regardless of whether I use the app to heat the car 2 hours before I go the few times this helps then another phenomenon occurs when i open the door and the window won't go down due to ice and i get in the car and close the door then the window explodes because the window hasn't gone down when there is a lot of snow on the car and I open the rear hatch, most of the snow falls straight into the trunk when it rains the same thing happens the hatch is not water tight and it is not fun to have the hatch filled with water these are just some of the problems i have with my tesla 3 here's a video that pretty well shows what I'm talking about kzbin.info/www/bejne/jYTUYahrlJWgnq8si=wOkFTrbGs-t-RSLC the next video shows that the Tesla model 3 and Y have no rust protection whatsoever from the factory this is really bad kzbin.info/www/bejne/f4PNm4aVrr5lh8ksi=mZfm1zE3zqcxZp4D Tesla is lousy when it comes to the body no rust protection they mix materials that generate galvanic currents that eat up the metal in the car if you own your Tesla for 1-2 years it works but I would never buy a used Tesla the rust protection is so bad that a 3-year-old car used in Scandinavia already has such rust damage that it fails the car inspection here, Tesla must learn from the established car brands how to make a car body that does not rust apart after a few years this part should be much easier than FSD etc. for this, all icu car manufacturers have the knowledge, it's just for Tesa to copy their method unless Tesla improves the quality of their cars and by that I mean the body, paint, mechanical, then many Tesla owners will be quite disappointed when they sell their 3 year old Tesla which is full of rust and paint damage unless you live in Miami or Dubai or some other place that doesn't have snow or rain in these cities no rust or rain protection is needed

Some grades of stainless steel corrode quite readily. If you want a rust proof stainless you need 316 grade. If your stainless steel is magnetic, it is poor quality, and it will rust. From what I have heard I suspect the Cybertruck is crappy low grade stainless (say 301).

Normal painted car is standing for one year in front of garage, car is dusty dirty, wash car and car is fine. Same time Cyberurinal has orange spots all over that can only be polished away if you are lucky. Nevertheless Elon states that the surface will mature over time from rust and scratches

As an engineer that’s looked a fair amount at stainless corrosion issues, this video is pretty alarmist. It’s very unlikely that rust will spread quickly under a wrap, it’s dependent in large part on exact stainless composition (which matters a ton) and factory passivation, which will almost certainly happen. Suggest interviewing a corrosion expert though, I’m not one.

I’ve been saying this since the first mention of wrapping your CT was made… Really need to understand the impacts of wrapping stainless steel… Stainless needs oxygen to not corrode. Chloride ion degradation is very common even in the best stainless. For example, sometimes you can see a little corrosion under the head of a stainless bolt due to the lack of oxygen in the joint.

I thought rust was the result of oxygen reacting with the metal. So for the steel to rust it would require oxygen to be present. Can you clarify?

I think you're being paranoid about stainless steel corrosion. I've used stainless fasteners on the underside of a car used in an area where road salt is used. Never had a corrosion problem. Many plastics are at least somewhat oxygen permeable. I would expect that a wrap would be sufficiently permeable to O2 that the oxide layer would not suffer. I think a bigger problem with the CT will be fingerprints, possibly water spots, and discolorations. Polishing with something like barkeeper's friend would be a lot of work, but would clean up most problems. I wouldn't hesitate to wrap the CT.

I feel like a $30 cordless buffer from Harbor Freight Tools could be used to buff out smudges on Cybertruck. I saw a $32 air powered polisher, which, should work with Cybertruck. I already have air hoses! Save thousands on washes by just having the supplies with you. Clean it whenever you want!

There's this misconception persisting that the Cybertruck is some form of unibody stainless steel monocoque. It is NOT. Only the upper body meeting SOME salt & acidic water over time is more enduring. The underbody getting the MOST of bad elements is still cast aluminum that rusts the same as before, so there will be coatings and coverings that in time and degrade under rugged terrain and rust to some degree. And given the stainless steel upper body isn't exactly the single, load bearing unibody once again misunderstood by the public, I'm not sure Cybertruck will be THAT more rugged than a regular truck. Gigacast aluminum & stainless will be fine but will NOT rewrite rugged truck history, nor will your Tesla glass withstand gunnfire.
