In 2001 Ichiro led the league in plate appearances, at bats, hits, average, and stolen bases. He was voted an all-star, he won a silver slugger, he won a gold glove, he was voted rookie of the year, and he was voted league MVP. One of the best individual seasons of all time.

Until they get rid of the "only 10 votes" rule, then I don't have ANY issue with a voter that wants to use a vote on their 10th guy that they think is worthy instead of throwing a vote away on a player that is guaranteed to get in anyway. Yes, Ichiro is a slam dunk - which is why "unanimous" isn't any type of important. He's a legend, and the vote % doesn't matter.
@WhiteNegativeСағат бұрын

I remember every one of them saying Ichiro except like one guy. I'm a proponent of WAR, but using it to describe why a closer shouldn't get in is ridiculous. The reason why he wasn't leading the league? Rivera and Hoffman. His other stats check out though

For as many baseball writers that vote, if a player misses 100%, but gets over 99%, the writers that left the player off their list should be identified. Period. They need to be asked, point blank, "What in the hell did YOU see that an entire industry of your peers apparently missed which emboldened you to leave that player off your ballot?" If they don't feel comfortable being put on the spot like that, they should not vote.

I never understood the idea that no player should be unanimous by the writers basically because Ruth and DiMaggio and Williams weren't. If the player is worthy just vote for them who cares if people got it wrong in the past not voting for these players, be the change.

I grew up watching Ichiro. I tried to hit lefty because of him (didnt work lol). What he would do before every swing and do that little tug of his jersey on his arm, I would do that too. This guy was a hero to me and is why I love baseball. People who don't understand Ichiro this he was just a slap hitter who hit singles and doubles. No he chose to do that because he batted leadoff and that was his responsibility. If he wanted to be a power hitter he could, he could hit 30-40 HR a year make no mistake about it. My all time favorite player and nobody loves baseball more than Ichiro which you continue to see. It's ridiculous that he isn't unanimous.

Brockman trying to use WAR against a relief pitcher's case for the HOF makes him only slightly less dumb than the guy who didn't vote for Ichiro.
@eoghbass2886Сағат бұрын
Exactly. If he’s going by that metric the only reliever that should be in the hall is Mariano Rivera. Bruce Sutter and Rollie Fingers both have less WAR than Wagner and not even close to as good of an ERA. Trevor Hoffman and Lee Smith are both below 30 WAR and they both have less strikeouts and a worse ERA than Wagner. Just blankly looking at saves and WAR shows these two literally have no idea what they’re talking about.

Instead of this, why not focus on giving all the voting or at least 2/3 of it to the players (to be determined who) and coaches? This surely would reduce most of the injustices and racism (of any kind) existing now!

Does anyone think for a second Ichiro would be the all time hits leader had he come at say 21. He came at 27, and he averaged 200 hits his first 10 years that's around 1500 more hits! 3,089 plus 1500 is 4,600 hits. Rose had 4,256 hits.
