Would a mile-high skyscraper ever be possible? Explore the physics behind some of the tallest buildings and megastructures in the world.
--
In 1956, architect Frank Lloyd Wright proposed a mile-high skyscraper, a building five times as high as the Eiffel Tower. While this massive tower was never built, today bigger and bigger buildings are going up around the world. How did these impossible ideas turn into architectural opportunities? Stefan Al explains how these megastructures became fixtures of our city skylines.

(you could probably fit ~1500 if you packed them in like sardines). And a sky scraper that big would probably have 20,000+ people in it. And good luck getting that massive an airship near a building.

@@Mystic-4252 Basically size does not matter.....thickness is the main deal. If you are familiar with Geometric Progressions then let me tell you that this very thing happens when we fold a paper. Let us suppose that the thickness of a paper be 40 microns, after one fold it's thickness will become 80 microns, in 2nd fold thickness will become 160 microns ie. thickness increases by a factor of 2 in each fold and such type of growth is exponential growth ie it increases very fast. However this is practically not feasible. We can't fold a given paper after some folds. Such operation with paper only exists on paper :-)

A much more substantial question would be: Do we (anybody in the world) actually NEED a mile high skyscraper?? What purpose would such a building fulfill?

All of your videos have this specific voice. The narrator's voice, which feels more like a computer generated one. It's soothing, how do you achieve that? Is there really a narrator or is it something else?

Good video, but it doesn't really answer the question: Is the technology we have today or in the near future enough to build a mile-high skyscraper? Or do we still need some huge technological leap?

That would technically put more of a wind load on the building. Also wind generators vibrate loudly and would shake the building

At 0:42 it looks like the top floor of the One WTC tower is higher than the top floor of the Sears Tower, but that's not actually true. The Sears tower has a higher top floor, but the One WTC tower is technically taller due to its tall spire at the top.
