Can I make this 40 Year Old Bike Run Again?
Lazarus is my 1980 Suzuki GS850gl, she was my first bike. I bought her back in 2013.
We've been on many adventures together, but she has pretty much sat parked since 2016.

Are you the REAL Shadetree Surgeon? "WHAT IS DEAD MAY NEVER DIE" While that is true, that doesn't mean it can't be brought back to life, especially if it is a carbureted motorcycle. We need to save every carbureted vehicle out there.

My dad bought an old semi a few states away. He had a shop look over it and they didn’t find any issues. When he picked up the truck, he noticed a belt appeared to be missing. Convinced that a shop would know more than he did, (and he definitely knew a lot), he proceeded to drive home. Because he didn’t give his own expertise enough credit, the missing belt was for the oil pump and engine blew a few hours later. So, I agree - Trust yourself more! And great video. It’s like being there with you.

Yay! Lazarus is alive!! I still have my first bike, 1975 Kawasaki 100 G4TR and since it was my grandfather's it's not going anywhere. I couldn't get it running last fall, my dad thinks it's the float that is stuck so I get to work on it this spring/summer. (when its warmer in the garage!) I'm also so over the moon that Honda is letting you keep the Africa Twin to travel with this year.

I'm a carguy who bought a 71 CB350 and a 73 CB750 last year for $1,200. Both complete, low miles bikes that were running before being parked for a few years but not running now. Technically, I still own my first bike (actually, both of them). One is a 1977 Vespa Ciao moped my dad bought for the family in 1979. A few years later I got a 3.5 HP Whisper Jet XL mini bike. Sadly, the series of bikes to follow are long gone. But there are a few more recent purchases stashed away in my shop. The 1975 R90 is the next to get life breathed back into it, but that will wait until my daughter is off to college. Thanks for the great video. Uncle Tony sent me here, like many others. Mother Honda provides again! I definitely sympathize with your troubles with Lazarus... But the things you've learned about both yourself and the bike while wrenching on it are irreplaceable. I pulled my current bike, a 1986 Goldwing, non-running out of a shed just before COVID hit. It took me 6 months of constant work, not having worked on ANY motorcycle OR carbs before, to get her into riding shape and it continued for another year after that. There's something to be said about learning by diving in feet first. I rode her nearly across the country from central Florida in 2021, and she's going to west Texas in three weeks. She's my first, and i'll never, ever part with her... Although I may get another bike or 2.

I started riding in 1993 on a 1980 gs450 1992, which needed a lot of work when my wife got it. It now runs great after a rebuild and lots of new parts and my daughter rides it too.

Reminds me so much of my experiences as a new rider with a 1982 GL 500 cafe racer. I put SO many miles on that thing and never understood the knock it had wasn’t supposed to be there. When we finally fixed it after two years dead in the garage, I said to my new boyfriend “That’s not my bike”. And years later he won’t ever let me forget it. I sold it when we moved to NC and just saw it get sold again on CL, glad to know she’s still kicking and making someone smile. Always love your videos, Amanda. Thank you for the honesty, willingness to share, and the effort you put into these videos.

My trusty old little GS did more road trips around Australia in the time I owned it then any other bike I ever owned. Unfortunately when I got married in ‘95 my then wife made me sell my bikes which I’ve never forgotten. Think it’s great you do your own work and I’ve got my fingers crossed you can sort out Lazarus. I kinda love this. Thank u. Kinda, only bcuz it also makes me sad. My love for bikes comes from my pop (explanation in bio). Around 2008 - 2010 I think, my pop offered me his 1985 Honda CB1000 Custom if I could get it running. Having no formal mechanical training, I bought the manual and got to work by myself, the manual and KZbin videos. About $1300 and I have no idea how many hrs later, I finally got it running. It felt amazing! Your happy dance reminded me of that day 😊 But unfortunately, I guess bcuz of my initial excitement at the prospect of finally having a bike, my dad's bike, and my inexperience, only then did I start taking a better look at the bike and found that I was able to put my fingers right through the frame underneath the bike. I still have no idea how it was still upright. I eventually ended up selling it and that still upsets me. I wish I had it back. 😔 My pop passed away in 2020 and it hurts even more that I don't still have that bike. Don't get rid of yours. That's a keeper.

I hate that moment of the bike turning over before it starts. I spent 8 months bringing a 2001 carbureted Ducati monster to life. From vacuum leaks that filled the cases with gas to the regulator rectifier that the wires were corroded off of. So many little things always keeping that bike from starting. Needless to say it runs better now than it probably ever did for the previous owner.

That was an absolutely terrific video and I really enjoyed it! I love the older bikes although they can sometime (or oftentimes ... lol) be like opening Pandora's Box! I do still have first motorcycle ('87 Suzuki Savage LS650) however it's currently not running and previously did a LOT of work to it (new clutch, new valve cover gaskets, brakes, electrical, and full tune-up)! The clutch was never correct when I first got it and upon pulling everything apart, I discovered it was missing one of the two thrust washers so there was never enough tension for it to work correctly. I replaced just about every part in the clutch basket and behind it and put everything back together. The next day I left for a one-week trip with the bike and it ran and shifted awesome - it was better than new and I was sooo excited! I had ran out of time to put the new tires on before the trip so I did it after I got back. The next time I took it out it was a brisk but beautiful morning! It had previously rained overnight so some of the roads were still wet. I ran to the auto part store (which was brand-new) and had a steep hill and S-turn to get from the main road up to the new auto part store's parking lot with brand new pavement. Anyways I picked up new turn-signal and brake light bulbs for the bike, installed them in the parking lot, then proceeded to leave. I was coming down the steep hill and going into the S-turn in first gear to prevent from building too much speed. I tried to gently hit the brakes as I was turning the first bend and the back drum brake immediately went into a slow skid on the brand new tires and pavement (that was still wet)! I ended up wiping out (first time ever). I quickly turned the bike off and picked it back up. I landed on my side and had a sweater on and ended up getting really bad rug-burn all up my right forearm (however didn't yet realized this). Instead of trying to pull up my bloody sleeve with holes in it now, I just wanted to get home quickly. So I picked the bike back up, fired it up and quickly got it back home and then got cleaned up. I didn't ride the bike for about 3 weeks after that (not intentionally) but I went to bring it back out one morning and tried starting it but no matter what I tried, it would not run all of a sudden! It had gas, spark, and everything else. I then went through the list of things to check and discovered the compression was really low! And this is where it still remains and not sure what exactly happened. I did some research and I know some of the Suzuki models had a compression-valve that would make it easier to start and am hoping it's something as simple as this, otherwise I'm going to be pulling the engine apart to rebuild it.

I recently got my first bike running again, too. A 1979 Honda CM185T. It's absolutely not a fast bike but it'll hoon (if you have patience)

These older vintage bikes are tough. Getting the moto-soul back into Lazarus will be very rewarding.

Standard "Book in Comment" warning::::: Anything worth putting as much time and effort as you have paid with "Her" must be worth saving and keeping. 💖is definitely the catalyst and how you love Her is putting time in. She has treated you as well as can be, the fact that she needs even more attention is normal lol. Remember that weird old guy at RMR 6 that came on a 1981 GoldWing GL1100? He (read me/I) spent months getting him ready to go and still had carb and fuel issues at higher altitude...causing more than a few issues for me on the 1500+ mile trip....hard to avoid altitude when riding in the Rockies lol. Great tenacity staying after her. I knew that you would anyway, because, YOU!. So let's get right into my E.S.C. ? reply. Amanda you and I share something about our seat driven lives, well at least we did in the beginning of our riding lives... When I was 19 I woke up on a bright spring morning full of sunshine and bird song. I felt so good about the beauty of where I lived (Portland Oregon) I decided that day, I wanted to go explore my beautiful state on a scooter. To be clear I call anything with three or less wheels and an engine a "scooter". I made the necessary announcement to my family and unsurprisingly, they were not quite as enthusiastic as I was. That was except one, that one was my Gramps... that is right Amanda, we both ride today because of our Grandfathers support. Maybe not for the same reasons but still, having Gramps swinging for me got my butt on a seat. See you in August. (Be ready for hugs...JS)💖💖 Yes I did edit the comment/book down...three times. I got a lot of words to use, what can I say?

You're a fearless inspiration, and the knowledge and experience you're gaining will only help you in the future, regardless of what bike you're riding. Congratulations and I salute your determination.

Congrats on getting Lazarus running again. Having worked (a little) on Honda carbs before (Honda 500 four) I am in awe of anyone who does this with such aplomb as yourself. They always scared the bejabbers out of me. Don't have my first bike anymore (Honda 175 twin), or my second (said 500 Four), or third, BMW R100GS, but I still have my fourth, 1993 BMW R1100RS. I found my forever bike and her and I will finish this journey together. Not anytime soon, I hope. She has 280,000km on her with only one major repair job, cam chain followers, and I have about the same equivalent kilometers with only the one cardiac arrest (well actually three in one go). Keep up the adventures Amanda and all the best for 2023.

My first bike was a 1974 CB 350 Honda. I rode it to beach at Newport CA. Al the time. Wish I still had that bike. I now have a 2022 KLR 650. I planning a road trip this summer to Idaho. How to see you on the road. I enjoy your adventures

I feel your pain! I still have my 1981 Yamaha Maxim which currently idles but won't throttle up. I've been through the carbs at least three times. I'm hoping that new main jets will solve the problem😊

Nice trick with the ratchet strap, that's just my sort of solution. ESQ: No, I'm afraid my 1970 Triumph T100P was sold on my mothers command shortly after I got out of hospital following a major accident I suffered as a pillion passenger.

I still have, work on, and ride my first street bike. I bought her brand new my senior year in high school, a 1989 Yamaha FZR400. I have other bikes I ride daily, some I rode and sold, but this one is my keeper. Love your videos, it’s an inspiration to one day ride cross country. I’d do it now, but it’s kind of hard living on the Big Island of Hawaii, my bikes don’t swim to well. Aloha 🤙🏽
