Pen and paper, always have small Stream Light in my pocket and a decent pocket knife, ball cap, mosquito net for my head/helmet just in case I stop and there are lot of mosquitoes, shoes for campsite, I use a dual fuel coleman stove and use gasoline, always have a tube and repair kit - 30,000 miles so far and no punctures!! I was taught at a young age to always have a map, a compass, a watch, and a knife whenever I was in the woods. The watch is useful to make a note of how long you have been walking or riding since the last map fix, since that tells you roughly how far you have gone in case you are a little lost. I like that you carry an actual compass, very underrated in today’s world.

Yes!! In a similar vein, growing up in Montana, it was always possible in the winter time that you might get stuck in your car in the winter somewhere without Service. So, you always had a sleeping bag, canned food, and water in your car at all times. I guess that comes across in how I pack on the bike now too lol

Under my seat I have room for the OEM toolkit (with a few additions), a tire repair kit (tubeless), an electric tire pump, and a jump starter/ power bank. In my tank bag I keep a water bottle, a hat, a pocket knife, tire pressure gauge, chapstick, some coins, a paper map, a sharpie, spare camera batteries, disposable wipes, and like 5 pairs of earplugs. In my jacket I always keep a spare key, my house keys, wallet, my prescription glasses (if I’m wearing my prescription sunglasses, and vice versa) and like 4 pairs of earplugs. I don’t like any bulk in my pants pockets, but I might have a pair of earplugs in each pocket. I have a powered phone charger on my handle bars, and I use my phone for music and directions. When I travel overnight or longer I have panniers on too, so I carry 1.5 litres of fuel, some more tools, stuff to clean and lube the chain, a few pairs of nitrile gloves, and a bit of oil in case I need to top up.

Great video Amanda! You pretty much called out my daily carry on a bike. I always have water, tools, first aid kit, snacks, headlamp, and girl stuff. You even got the nail clippers. I have the same kinds of clips on my bags. They are murder on the finger nails! Layers, layers, and more layers. Colorado... I have seriously ridden in 100+ degrees through the desert on the west side of the mountains and a few hours later ridden in the 50s atop the continental divide. You have to just plan on getting caught in a wild summer storm in the afternoon, all the while, hoping the road makes a turn before you hit the storm you see in front of you. About the only thing I didn't see was paper maps. Spotty service and unexpected route changes, usually to avoid weather, are a thing. The Rockies have a funny way of teaching a person to stay on their toes and stay flexible. I love this state! Travel safe!

Your video reminded me of something I need to carry which is a compass and a paper map. Last weekend I travelled 500km in northern Ontario Canada and had the route all planned out on my phone which I use as a GPS. I ended up having an issue where the charging cable I carry for my phone was a cheap one and it wouldn’t allow me to charge the phone quick enough to use as a GPS all day. Therefore, when the phone died I was lost and frustrated and realized a compass would have helped and learning how to use it with a map is something I need to learn. Great video as always

Thanks Robert! I don't pretend to know all there is to know about ADV gear, I've really only had 3-4 different sets of Gear. My first set of leathers, then I had a set of non-waterproof textiles from Tourmaster (for the Pilgrimage), when I got back I got an Aerostich Roadmaster suit which is 100% waterproof and awesome, but it is SOOOO heavy and I have one without a liner which makes my opinion a little skewed, and then I've had this set of Scorpion Yosemite Jacket and Pants for the last two years or so. I'm not sure my opinion would be all that fair since I haven't had the opportunity to try any of the Goretex Klim gear yet, but I'll add a gear video to my to do list!

@AstheMagpieFlies5 жыл бұрын
I have the Scoprion EXO AT-950, it's modular and its only DOT rated. Not the lightest helmet at 3.77lbs , or the safest as Modulars that are not Snell or ECE rated are more likely to have the chin bar detach during an accident. However, Scorpion helmets do fit my head a little better because unlike Tim I have a very round head, and helmets like my Icon Airframe Pro that are built for Oval shaped heads give me a lot of pressure headaches. The modular is also a lot easier for me to get onto my head, and allows me to have a quick snack at a gas station without having to remove my helmet entirely. I've also had this one for two years as I replaced it at the same time that I got my new gear, and I had the benefit of getting an industry discount as I was still working at the dealership when I got it lol I also like that it has drop down sun shades on the inside of the helmet so I don't have to worry about also carrying sunglasses.

@AstheMagpieFlies4 жыл бұрын
Hey John! Well When I first started riding off-road I did it solo because I didn't know anyone would go with me haha! I started riding off-road on Lazarus too so def not as plush as the CB500x and the Tiger. When I was working at the dealership I did most of my off-road riding with Karl or in a big group, since I didn't do a whole lot of riding that wasn't related to the dealership while I was there. Now that I'm not there anymore I would say that 98% of the riding I do is solo on and off-road. If you have a backyard or a grassy field and a friend or two to practice picking up your bike that will DEF help your confidence! Do some research there are at least three ways to pick up a motorcycle without hurting yourself, so watch a goodly amount of youtube videos and then practice so you can figure out the best way for you to pick it up. :) When you're riding off-road dumping your bike is a WHEN not an IF :P

What drone do you use? I've been thinking of getting one for the channel, not sure if I will or not. What do you think of the Harley Davidson Pan American? What would be a good and affordable price for an ADV scoot?
@AstheMagpieFlies5 жыл бұрын
I don't have an opinion on it really, I'm waiting for the actual bike to come out so I can ride it and then I'll have an opinion. Too many things can change between Concept and production, so I'd rather reserve my opinion until it comes out. I think price varies on your expectations, new vs old etc. If you have a lot of patients and are willing to work on the bike yourself you could get an ADV scoot for as little as $1k. If you want something brnad new or one - two years old etc you're looking at more like $6k-14k depending on if you're getting a small capacity or a large cc bike. There's a lot of different kinds of bikes in the ADV category. I prefer the mid-weight adventure bikes but you can get a small cc bike for cheaper.

You're just too cool, Kiddo. At age 60, I'm making some hard decisions as to motorcycling. While I adore the old Geezer Glider (Goldwing GL1200) that I've ridden for way over 300K miles, I'm finding that I'm no longer strong enough to ride her like a dirt bike when offroad. I've been looking at lighter bikes (she knows this, and I think she secretly resents it (the 'wing) but it's time to make a change, since I still do some rugged riding. Your recommendations would be appreciated along the lines of dependability, load capacity, etc.
@AstheMagpieFlies5 жыл бұрын
lol Thank you! Gosh recommendations for something more capable than a Goldwing... that one is hard. You could test ride some BMW 800s they have a low center of gravity that makes them great for a lot of people, BMW has a long track record of being reliable but Maintenance costs and parts are expensive compared to Japanese manufacturers. Have you tried a Honda NC700? That might be a good bike to look into and test ride. The new Suzuki Vstroms have much better handling than the older ones, another bike to test ride. I can't recommend the Tiger, just because it's so darn top heavy, it would be worse to keep upright than the Goldwing. As much hate as I'll probably get for saying it, I can't recommend any of the KTM Adventure bikes ,because they're notorious for expensive parts and the fuel pumps going out. When I was still doing the Karl's Mystery Ride, every time we had a KTM adventure bike on the ride they had issues.

It doesn't help me if i make 700 kliks in a non stop fasion and in the evening i cant even se my goal town/place. But a question: Doesn't the tiger come with it's own set of tools?

My tiger didn't come with tools. I got it used from Eagle Rider.

What do you carry Charles? What kind of riding do you normally do?
@chuckwalksdogs5 жыл бұрын
I usually take a fanny with wallet, sunscreen, keys and a bottle of water. I also have a small tool bag on my bike. I’ll take rain pants and a jacket if I know there’s rain in the forecast but that’s about it. I noticed you carry a lot of electronics. I briefly experimented with an action cam on my bike and the videos were cool but I found having to remove it when I left the bike and carry it around (with all the accessories) a bit of a hassle. I suppose I carry similar kit as you if I’m going camping but I ride a Bonneville and normally I don’t have any luggage cuz I’m shallow and I think it takes away from the look of my bike 😛

I'm curious to know your method for filling that MSR bottle with gasoline. I have one at home but never use it because the nozzle pressure at gas stations doesn't make it easy to feel them.
@rosemaryus-ct61515 жыл бұрын
most everybody has a can of gas at home. pour some into a cup and then into ur MSR bottle. for refills, a folding funnel would work and pack well.

Honestly I use a funnel and I fill it at the gas station one little bit at a time. I have had some overflow a couple times, but once you do it 2-3 times it gets easier.
@orangelion035 жыл бұрын
Siphon it from a full tank from your first fill up on whatever trip you are doing. Dump it back into the tank after every trip if it has not been used. Always ensures it's fresh.

I’m really bad I don’t carry much, but then again, in the U.K. we are never far from civilisation, and we certainly don’t have many trails.

My gloves were the equivalent of the Klim Klimate Gauntlet Glove (I'm not sure if they actually make the gloves I own anymore). But the point is that Snowmobile gloves are going to be the best insulated and the best waterproof for your buck, but you are going to compromise on saftey since they aren't as abrasion resistant or armored as motorcycle gloves. I accept the compromise because it means I can feel my hands for longer which means I'm better in control of my bike 😂

Everyday Carry or EDC is also a genre of video that has been making the rounds on KZbin in general for a while, where people make a video of just emptying their pockets.
