The ground pin is bonded to the neutral inside the outlet. Just like in a home where the grounding wires are bonded to the neutral at the main (first) cut off point in the system. Connecting it to Earth is something different that’s also done so lightning strikes don’t damage your system or devices in your home.

That box creates a bootleg ground which is not safe, it may work for simple charging but if the yeti box isn’t grounded with a separate electrode it’s not exactly safe, because there’s no where for fault current to go!
@sum42guy2k
@sum42guy2k 5 жыл бұрын
Actually it is safe as there is a ground being produced in the same way as a house! If you open up an electrical panel there is a DIRECT connection between neutral and ground. In theory the only thing unsafe in this set up would be no actual ground to the ground, however the entire system is isolated, not connected to any thing, therefore there is no circuit. I don’t see any fault with this setup. Now if it was a GENERATOR with a metal frame, now there is a potential circuit, however this setup is still fine as long as the generator is hooked into a ground from the grounding lug. In fact that outlet is the only way to get generators to charge an electric vehicle unless the manufacturer did it internally (not many do, some do, but not many)

Set your charging rate to 8 Amps on the Tesla. Charging at 12Amps will overload the Yeti 1400, and that's why you had issues. 8 Amp is the limit. Also, you should have got the Yeti 3000, which has twice the capacity, and then a 12A charger would be fine.

For those confused why it worked: In a (code compliant) North American household primary panel (main breaker box) the neutral bus bar and the ground bus bar (think of it like a power strip) are connected what that means is every neutral wire is already electricly connected to ground, (the two rectangular prongs on standard electric outlets are live and neutral while the circle is ground), so in order to trick the charger the electrician just a connected the neutral and ground in the little box the electrician gave Dan. The perpose of grounding is that every exposed piece of metal that is near electrical working is grounded so if a wire ends up coming loose and touching that same bit of metal rather than the electricity passing through you, the user and killing you, it passes through the ground wire to the ground. Dan is cercumventing said safety measure it a way that may be deadly.

OK pulled the specs - the battery in question has a max capacity of 1.425kWh (1425 Wh). The Tesla model 3 uses 27kWh for 100 or .27kWh. So multiply and you get .378 miles so that 1 mile he stated is most likely a rounding up. He known it wouldn't work if he just looked up the specs.

The grounding cable is shorting neutral to ground. This is actually quite dangerous. You need to label it "ONLY FOR BATTERY PACK/TESLA" so that way someone doesn't accidentally use it elsewhere.

The last thing you want is resistance to ground. What you need is to make the ground pin the same potential as the neutral pin. Best achieved with an inch of wire inside the plug!

So it basically kept up with the power consumption the car uses at idle?
@bradallen1832
@bradallen1832 5 жыл бұрын
Well, basically, yes, but that's only in a warm climate which is already near the right temperature to charge a battery, so the battery actually collected one or two miles of range. In a cold climate or a very hot climate, the Tesla would use more energy than the small battery pack could provide. Furthermore, Teslas have a software problem in which they will shut down in such a way that you cannot provide enough energy to start it up again with such a small battery pack. The only niche case this is useful is if you notice the car says "1 miles range left" and you know you need 2 miles to get to the closest charger, so you start charging it right away with this tiny battery pack, before the exterior temperature (weather) messes you up. That is extremely unlikely.

Go get a Inergy Kodak 25lbs or Inergy Apex 20lbs! It is far less heavy. You can charge the battery while charging the Tesla. Both of those charge in less the 6 hours Just run a grounding wire from the outer case of the portable battery, to your chassis, which is a clamp like a jumper cable end. The grounding block is weird! Grounding without grounding! If you have a American Express card, you already have free AAA service, so does Chase I think!

First "The ground pin" needs a earth connection like a metal part in the dirt. Second try the same thing with almost empty battery, with closed door, car locked. The contraption at the end of the cable needs an connector to ground... look at gas powered generators, good quality units have a metal rod to hammer into the ground. Aka grounded.

This is a 1400 Wh pack so even with no energy loss you are looking at 4.66 miles (averaging 300 Wh/mi in a Model X). Factor in the conversion loss (going DC to AC to DC again), and the heat loss as heard from the video by the fans running, I'm not surprised that you only got 2 miles. I think the trick to getting a "gas can" equivalent is finding a way to keep it DC to DC and charge it slow enough that the battery doesn't heat up as much. Keep up the good work!

Potentially if you had a lightning strike and you don’t have an isolated ground, then it will greatly damage the car. That outlet adapter thing your friend made combines neutral and ground together, which in a home setting is ok to do temporarily. It’s the same thing that a 3 prong to 2 prong adapter does. Neutral and ground are essentially the same thing. You’ll see this inside any breaker panel- All the white (neutral) wires connected to earth ground. The bare ground wire is just an extra ground for protection.

The situation will be completely different in real life because 1.Your battery will be nearly empty,not 3/4 full.The 2nd thing is you charged the 'pack' to full and used it straight away.If you put that in the frunk and it sat there for a few weeks,wouldn't the 'pack' loose power?.I do understand the point and whoever figures out something that works will do well in this emerging electric car accessories market.

So, we got a vw e-up in the family, has about an 18 kwh battery. Also have a small generator with about 3500 Watts of peak continous power. Usually that's used for our party-and-barbecue shed out in the forest or as emergency power if it goes out because it runs really quiet and has a pretty low fuel consumption, even on peak power. With that bad boy, the Up charges about 15-20% an hour. Obviously the battery is considerably smaller but Still.

Another video showed the yeti 3k, it faults because the battery can't sustain the full 1400 watts being pulled. Have to adjust the charge being pulled from the vehicle. The Tesla's battery is too big even with the 3kwh pack that goal zero makes. For us poor people with smaller battery EVs, this setup with a 400w solar panel would work great. Cool video, finally got to see a Model X over last weekend!

Your Tesla Model X has an energy consumption of ~400 Wh/mile. A model 3 can achieve 250 Wh/mile. Therefore for the same portable battery, you could get 2 x 400/250 = 3.2 miles. In an emergency, by driving a Tesla Model X at 20-5 mph, the consumption can be as low as 100 Wh/mile, effectively quadruple the range added by the portable battery.

The calculation is pretty simple. The 1400yeti has 1400wh capacity. The Tesla has a power consumption of around 20kwh per 100km which is 5km per 1kwh. At 1.4kwh (1400wh) it should be around 7km or 4-5 miles (without any losses taken into account. These could be as high as 30% and reduce the range to 2-4 miles per 1400yeti)
