Wouldn't hurt to give Chad a call with your wiring questions. He might tell you that wire connectors in automotive applications should be crimped, not soldered - including those big cable lugs. The solder stiffens the wire which can cause it to eventually break due to fatigue caused by vibrations. There's also a chance of the connections becoming desoldered if there's ever a high load on the wiring.

Kudos for the Mars Rover reference. As an electronics designer of the Mars Rovers I tip my hat to all of you at MORR. By the way, doing wiring is just like solving a challenging puzzle. [By the way, doing wiring is just like solving a challenging puzzle. Very satisfying.] Wiring is an art. I'm old-school electronics, I design and build vacuum tube amps, all 'point-to-point' wiring (no circuit boards) and it can either be a chore, or be nirvana, state of mind and having the right tools and materials is essential. I noted Matt using the term "looming", which is interesting, as it predates my years, even my being decades older than Matt. "Bundling" and "harnessing" are the more popular terms, but Googling "cable harnessing" produces many excellent hits, including the term "looming". In an environment where there's a lot of harsh movement, like in the Bombi, 'strapping' the harness (Using cable ties made specifically for the job) to the adjacent surface minimizes the chance of strain pulling lugs apart, or the bundle getting chaffed on sharp edges.

When soldering those terminals onto the large wires, the second one you did is a cold solder joint and will be brittle. The wire is cold and the solder is hot, but the wire will not be hot enough to pull the solder into the wire so it’s just connected on the exterior. That one is likely to break eventually. When soldering like that, all components must be heated.

Love your videos guys! Just a little FYI, and this is coming from someone who's been wiring for 26 years, you really shouldn't be soldering those crimp style contacts, particularly big power type lug crimps. As others have said, the solder can melt or, more likely, crack through vibration and then you can have skectchy connection issues or worse, the wire falls out and starts a fire 😕

Your de-clawed hammer gave me a chuckle. My brother & I were working ion a refrigeration installation in a bar one day. Trying to put in cable staples in a really tight area, I was hitting the staple with the hammer turned sideways. Busted off a claw. A few minutes later I busted off the other claw. It was a steel shank Craftsman hammer. I said, “Dan, we better stop at Sears on the way home and buy a new hammer.” My brother said, “Buy? Nah. Craftsman tools have a lifetime guarantee. They’ll give us one.” We were twins, but my brother was way more assertive than I. We went into the tool department, picked up a new hammer and went to the register to exchange the broken one. The cashier called the department manager over to approve the exchange. He looked at it, noticed the battle scars on the sides and said, I’m not going to give a new hammer! You’ve been beating it on the sides, not the business end!” Dan came right back with “Show me in the catalog where it says “You must not hit the hammer on the sides.” The manager said, “OK this time, but don’t come here again!” Dan said, “Fine. There’s only about 15 more Sears stores around Philadelphia. You gonna put out an APB on us?” Then we left. We were about 17 years old, in the late 1950s. I miss Sears…

That might be a good place for a diff lock controlled by a governor, enough differential to steer but enough lock to prevent spinning a track too much. I’m a tech geek and would consider doing control electronically so you could have it work automatically or manually.

We don't see if when you wear your hat but I must say you have very nice hair. Also, for the fender supports, you could slip rubber covers over each of the supports so no one slips and gets cut on those edges.

I was thinking that the heater hoses should have been run into pipes along the length of the body, then use hoses only at the very ends. It'd add a little weight and maybe some fittings, but when it's time to service the hoses, it wouldn't be necessary to take the body apart to do so. The pipes could also be fitted with a flushing port and/or drainage tee for future maintenance. This was a fun video.

An idea for your heater hoses: the school bus I drive has valves in line (in cab and under hood) to shut off hot coolant to the heater(s) for more comfortable driving in Summer months. Just an idea since you drive the Bombi in the desert in all seasons.

Add some molybdenum to the gear oil. It will make it much more durable. If it still gets too hot, add a power steering pump to the rear axle to circulate the gear oil through a heat exchanger, NASCAR style.

On the cab lift mounts I would recommend a pin pointing down to lock position so the cab doesn’t come off the lift and hurt someone also I would put a pad on top to use to get access to the roof in the field.

OMG, don't solder your connectors. You can get a hydraulic crimper from Harbor Freight for cheap that will make a good crimp on those large connectors. A good crimp cold fuses the copper strands together making an excellent electrical connection that doesn't weaken over time like a solder joint does.

Hey Matt. I have had a very similar problem with friction welding differential spider gears together. I used to do a fair bit of off road competitions and our rigs run a 3rd diff in the transfer case, this allows us to unlock it, pull up the handbrake and spin the front wheels. Works amazingly to make tight turns, you can almost make a full within the length of the vehicle if you do it correctly. Long story short, I have tried everything I can think of to force lubrication into between the cross shafts and the planetary gears. Eventually I spoke to our oil supplier at the office and he recommended I try RAVENOL RHP (75w-90) In fact he was so confident in the product he sponsored it to me to try. Years down the line and I have not broken another 3rd diff!!! Yes I suppose you also need to be aware and not let one wheel spin with the engine on the limiter while the other is stationary, or in my case do doughnuts continuously. I stop after a few seconds to allow the oil the penetrate the gears and go again. I don't know if Ravenol is very common is the US, but may be worth seeing if there is an equal grade oil. Great show, you guys are the Highlight of my Mondays!

The Bombi is getting quite impressive. You transformed it from a toy to play with into a heavy duty recovery vehicle. It seems nearly done but like the rest of the builds you will always find just one more thing it needs as time goes on. Whoever you recover at night is going to see that help is on the way a mile away with all the bright lights coming at them. Too bad about your favorite hammer, maybe you should bury it with a ceremony.

In this situation with open diff (@3:45 where one side is stopped), the other in fact spins _twice_ the rpm than both would rotate. Coupled with the fact, diffs are not really designed for long periods of big rpm difference between the two shafts, this must have been more than a stress for that poor differential.
