Growing up on a cotton farm we had a 3 on the tree that was worn out. I found when you lift the lever and pull down into first you also need to lift the lever push up to neutral then drop the lever to align with the shift pin at the bottom of the steering column. Our truck would stay in first and go into second and the truck would just shake and die. Thanks for your past videos they were a big help getting my 289 back up and running.

You might want to change the primary idle feed restrictions to 0.030" so its not too rich. The 0.031 is good for a 327 331 engine. A 0.032 is great for a 351. A 0.033 for a 390. The running out of fuel in the idle circuit is a huge thing. Running rich in the idle circuit is the same. . Please verify the steering coupling is not sliding up the sterring box input shaft. Check the 5/8 and 11/16 wrench size bolt in the bottom of the crossmember to frame rail directly below the steering box. Just a few things that i have run across on many late 60s early 70s ford trucks.

There is one big fat awesome thing you can do for yourself: buy a factory shop manual for your year of truck! They are available on disc, download or in printed form but I personally prefer the printed version. Yes, you can print off pages from data but you have to have a decent printer to do that. Buying a factory shop manual is the best bit of advice I can give to anyone. Peace & good vibes! 👍🏻📘👨🏻‍🔧 - Max Giganteum

Very cool truck. The only thing that would make it better is a 300 I-6. Never the less the Windsor is also a great engine. A well setup 3 on the tree is a joy. Leaves room for the doggo.

My Dentside has the big six which is why I bought it, but I'd still like to build a 302 for it. I would keep the six, and mounts/towers, and be pretty easily able to switch between the two! It was built with a 300, but someone robbed it and put a 240 in its place, so I want to put a 300 crank and rods/pistons in it. It does have that 240 head.👍
@MaxGiganteum
@MaxGiganteum Жыл бұрын
I would postulate that the previous 300 was worn out and was replaced with a 240 out of a parts yard because that was what was available or affordable at the time. As for a 302 build, I would go with a 351W instead. You'll get more power for the same money and it too will bolt right in. Peace & good vibes! 👍🏻👨🏻‍🏭🇺🇸 - Max Giganteum
@DanEBoyd
@DanEBoyd Жыл бұрын
@@MaxGiganteum My theory is that my truck was built from someone's parts pile which was left over after they built the truck which THEY wanted. I know the cab wasn't original. Ordinarily I would opt for the larger engine, but my engine parts pile is all 302/5.0 stuff, including 8 OEM forged HO pistons with rods, and a Performer RPM intake. I'd need a different intake and probably connecting rods, if I went with the 351W - though I'd definitely go with the Windsor if a first gen Lightning engine fell in my lap, with its GT40 intake manifolds... Including converting to EFI.

Luke. I also have a 302 but in a 1968 Ford Mustang 302…..and coincidentally I bought exactly the same carburetor as you…..a QFT 450. Philosophically I am the same as you. I think any guy that over carbs a car is just idiotic. I want power sure….but I also want fuel economy and clean burning plugs…..the most important is clean burning plugs, where I burn fuel closest to 14.7 AFR. I love your videos, but was really hoping you had installed an AFR gauge on this truck so I could learn from your tuning process. When I put your exact same carb on my 302, it showed lean when I revved it. So I’ve put a larger main jet on, then a bigger main jet squirter, then a bigger power valve. I’m not at all happy with how the AFR dances around. I’ve spent probably 100 hrs watching your videos and am really disappointed in myself being unable to get this QFT carb to run efficiently on the car. If I could get you on FaceTime to help me, I’d pay you for your time. I’ve spent lots of money buying different sizes of main jets, different power valves, different primary squirter…..and even different IFR jets. I’m at the point I give up. I would have saved money just buying a fuel injection setup. Very frustrated

Great video as always! Step by step diagnosis and instruction are always top notch! Couldn't agree more about over carbing your engine. We call those throttle contraptions, mousetraps... lol I use to remove them doing carb and/or intake swaps but later learned how they can be a very important safety feature preventing uncontrolled WOT situations with broken engine mounts. Something to consider, but I know not all intakes or carbs will allow for their use. Next best thing was the invent of the cable throttle. Great video Luke, and get going on project with your dad while you still can!

Don't be harsh... for some people, it seems to be rocket science because they never learned anything about automobiles or engines. For example, only so many folks grow up with a bona fide car guy for a father... or go to a tech school of any kind. In the year 2022, most kids in public schools don't even have the option of auto shop during high school as those programs were ditched long ago. Sadly so! Best wishes! 👍🏻👨🏻‍🔧🇺🇸 - Max Giganteum

It got 15 mpg not loaded with loads got 10 mpg so put different 4 barrel carb of Holley CFM 600 with Manual Choke got 25 Mpg not loaded up and 15 mpg then found at Junk Yard 1976 Ford had 4×4 plus floor shifter Transfer case in mint shape switch over my truck plus got 410 ratio rear ends gears and keep going as Drum brakes to plus 8 studs wheels with 265/85/ 16 ! When got 1995 Dodge made tow truck has Cummings Desiel motor and lots better on fuel in 2002 and found a cousin of mine in Alberta Canada had 1972 Ford F350 extended cab same as one but 4×4 already tow back Ontario Canada were restoration first 1972 but scrap rest to guy need parts of frame and some body parts fix his up! So gain to get Dodge ready for tow truck number 2 have it was my late Uncle Bob plus great truck plus Manual transmission floor shifter and 4×4 ! Old Ford F350 extended sold it in 2005 after restoration plus put Floor shifter Creeper 4speed Overdrive Manual with high quality clutch too! Sad sell 1972 truck because was late Cousin Jerry had till past away in 1993 then I got and his long time girlfriend Julie was business partner for tow truck when she past away 2004 sold to but new owners got to lots vechile shows since to !
