Original design was a ram- jet using coal dust compressed into a disc that would slowly rotate as the fuel burned off. US troops did glide tests in Germany with the prototypes they found. Films of the glide tests can be found on KZbin. Lippisch's designs are among my favorites. Thanks for this vid
@onenote661917 күн бұрын
The coal-burning ramjet idea was laughable then and remains laughable even with modern technology. What you have to remember is that as long as the engineers kept coming up with cool, semi-plausible Wunderwaffe ideas, they wouldn't get sent to the Eastern Front to die. This goes a long way toward explaining a lot of late-war Nazi projects. I can see why it doesn't want to turn though - the area of that vertical fin is insane.
@Mr.Thermistor722815 күн бұрын
that is insane and something ive never seen yet! thanks for sharing that
@saqibsultantemuri243721 күн бұрын
The Germans were running low on fuel at the late stage of WWII. So they came up with a engine powered by Coal. The Lippisch was designed for that engine.

Certainly appeared to fly better after the front fell off! And if you persist and master it, it will be a head turner. Looks spectacular in flight.
@Graff-Art7 күн бұрын
I had one lippisch delta as a slope soarer which I later converted to propeller driven. The huge fin makes it super difficult to roll. The solution was to add a rudder which actually is an extra aileron! I mixed that to the ailerons, and it worked perfectly. The CofG is crucial and the way it flies is rather self stabilizing in a rocking motion. Lippisch is not for the beginning pilots....

I think you will need to put a rudder on and link rudder to aileron for it to fly right with that big centre section or you need to make the wings bigger and not to scale
@TheBluemanBenny22 күн бұрын
Ya, I agree, I think if the wings were just a bit bigger, it would not tend to tip side to side so much.
@AcroAirwolf22 күн бұрын
@@TheBluemanBenny If you add a rudder, it will cause a rolling moment in the opposite direction and only a minimum of yaw movement. Rudder on such a plane is not necassary, just for controlling on the ground during take off and landing. I would rather add boundary layer fences on the lower side of the wing as close as possible to the wing tip, this will add stability around the longitudial axis. Or add a gyro for the aileron. The P.13a was a concept for an interceptor with a ramjet and powered by coal, because of it´s high ernergy efficence. Lippisch dreamed of flying with high supersonic speeds. But later it was found out that it would not even reach Mach 1. A team of engineers in Austria after the war calculated the ramjet propulsion and made experiments. They found out that it would have been much too small for such an interceptor, but basically it works.

@@AcroAirwolf Make the rudder low down on the back of the fin so its force is all close to the center of thrust.
@AcroAirwolf20 күн бұрын
@@greggv8 A delta wing with such a strong sweep is inherently extremely stable around the vertical axis. Since you don't want to fly high turns or flick rolls with such a plane, you don't need it. The wobble around the longitudial axis comes from alternating stalls at the edge of the wing tip at higher angles of attack, which is the case with many wings with large sweeps in in combination with short spans. I have already mentioned the remedy above. Installing a rudder will have no effect on this.

I can see if it is not a perfectly coordinated turn, you will lose air flow over the controls on on side (and lose some lift on one side). That could be part of the issue with the flight characteristics. A rudder would help to coordinate the turn. That is just my guess from what I can see but I don't have the controls in my hands. It would help to film the flight and the controls and play the video of both simultaneously when troubleshooting the issue.
@greggv820 күн бұрын
It needs a short rudder that doesn't go all the way up the back of the fin. That will keep the rudder from inducing roll.
@russcole568522 күн бұрын
More infill up front for the weight and strength, the rudder/vertical stabilizer might be creating a lot of asymmetric drag above the CG causing it to pitch up

The intention was to use freshly created carbon monoxide from coal dust similiary to wood gas powered cars probably. I guess they had no clue or practical way of storing carbon monoxide. Wikipedia says at about −191.5 °C (−312.7 °F; 81.6 K) it's getting liquid.That's below methane and probably the metal would crack or something.

That's wild. Can you, or have you ever tried to make a T3RB? It's not a real aircraft, I don't think anyway. That triangle UFO with the three lights and the orange light in the center. That would be wild. I mean if you could make something that looked like it and actually flew. Being totally honest, I've seen a few weird things in the sky in my life. But on the subject of the T3RB, I've never seen one. Not the triangle anyway. I did see a rectangle one night that was just like what people describe. Sounds crazy but I saw it. It was 8 white lights, very bright, I know sometimes the military use bright lights to block out the shape of a craft. And the white lights were all equal distance, like four squares side by side. And in the exact center of those lights, was a bright amber light. Like a flying wing. Now, I don't know if it was one solid craft or smaller ones flying in formation. I know they were flying illegal. This was just before smartphones became a thing. And it flew low. If it was any lower, it would have been taking out the trees on the hill tops. Flew right over the house. My woke family came out and looked at it. It was going from east to west. In Eastern Kentucky. Two smaller cesna type planes that were way higher in altitude, flying from south to north, flew right over top of it. I could hear their engines. This thing didn't make a sound. It was wild. Glad I got to experience it. I've only seen one thing in my life that I know for a fact couldn't have been anything man made. That was when I was 6 or 7 in the mid 1980s. But I won't get into that story. At the time I thought what I saw was something normal. Hahahaha I asked a guy who built flying wings for the government, about that thing I saw that night. You know what he told me. "Don't worry about planes that fly at night". Hahahahahaha but If you do build a plan that looks like a T3RB, I can guarantee you get the views. Plus it would just be cool. But if you have already done it, I apologize. Lol. I just had to tell that story though.
