I'm self taught at everything I do. And this video was impressive. I'm sure Michelle realizes that he's an amazing mechanic with a wealth of knowledge. But I wonder if she knows that professional schooled working mechanics often will never touch transmissions because they're just too difficult and complex. That's why transmission shops are completely separate and that's all they work on. Here he has that make of transmissions completely memorized and likely with no formal training just working with people who taught him. And what he taught himself. It's a basic attitude from the start of (sometimes arrogantly with myself) thinking nothing is too complex for me. And thinking I can teach myself that. That's what makes the best self-taught people. And it saves on tuition fees too! Hahaha

So is the doubler to give you lower gearing or higher gearing for the highway? I worked at a heavy truck dealership and a customer brought in a F-600 that he was using to move big hay bails. He had the shop put in a diesel, 4 wheel drive and the transmissions. If I remember it was a 6 speed manual with a 2 speed brownie with a 2 speed transfer case. When it was finished the mechanic took it out in the lot and put it in 1st, low, 4 wheel low. Got out and walked beside it to check out clearance. I think he was just showing off. 😁

its for low range. crawling. because he has an auto,1st isnt low enough. if he had a zf 5 sp. or nv4500,with a 1356 transfer.. it wouldnt matter.. but you yanks like your auto,s.. i have 4.11 diffs,35,s. zf 5sp. 1356 transfer. i drive down hills in low.. why,,its a ford..brazilian 6 cyl tdi, with 700nm..std ford product..

What is your doubler? Last THM400 I built was 1987. One night I tore 2 400’s apart so that I could have a long tail stock, and Joe could have a short tail stock. Mine was a variable pitch torque converter, from a 1966 Buick Electra 225. I put it in to a 1974 GMC C10 350, with 3.42 gears. In low gear, in low range of the torque converter, 1000 rpm, not even moving. In low gear, in high range of the torque converter, 1000 rpm, 13 mph. On a 600 mile trip across northern Montana, through Glacier National Park, Going To The Sun Highway, I was never short of power for the climb up The Garden Wall. Yet my highway mileage was 21.2 miles per gallon. Very respectable for a pickup of those years with a full sized camper on it, also had a pass through, the pickup A/C kept us a nice 70°f on a 95° to 105°day. I have to thank my Automatic Transmission Instructor Mike Wajowick at Northern Montana College for the idea of the dual range 400’s. Hello from north east Montana. 10 miles from the Canadian border.
