Love the pen. I do use my tools to help "set the mood" for my work, though I mostly do deep knowledge work and writing, not drawing. A nice notebook, a nice pen that feels right, and an inspiring ink are all something that make me happy and emotionally more "positive", which can help my motivation. I recently found myself feeling a little emotionally "down" and so I switched from using a black ink to Platinum's Blue Black ink, and my mood pretty instantly perked back up. Sometimes just switching things up and finding some joy in the little things can make a difference. I have my "favorite" pens that I use, and they are not always my most expensive pens.

I think that there is something to having nice materials that's helpful in the creative process. Like, when you're cooking and you use a good knife, it makes you want to use it more. When I first starting getting *in* to art in a not-little-kid-way was when I started 6th grade, and they gave us these big black sketchbooks and I never had a *real* sketchbook before and was so excited and we decorated them and whatnot. I wonder how my art would have been had I used literally any other sketchbook because the paper in them was *TERRIBLE.* I know this now. You erased anything once and it shredded to bits. I was 11, of course I was erasing things constantly, learning, trying to get things juuuust right, and getting SO frustrated that my very medium was dissolving underneath me. Canson Mixed Media pads. They are cheap, they are clean, they take pencils, lots of erasing, ink, paint, even watercolor. Fucking love those things, they're almost all I use. Had I had one of those from the beginning.. man I don't know. Woulda saved me a lot of freaking heartache. But I'm still drawing with walmart mechanical pencils, and some of my favorite pens were literally from the dollar store. As a violinist, it definitely does make a difference whether you get an expensive professional instrument versus one in the middle range or a beginner violin. HOWEVER, I truly believe music and art are not pay to win, and I am sure 90 percent of you reading this will say the same. My violin was 2000$, which is mid-range. Don't get me wrong, 2000 is a crap ton of money, and I am eternally grateful for the opportunity to have such a nice instrument, but this is beside the point. My peers in conservatory have instruments ranging up to the ten-thousands range, yet they still sit behind me in orchestra, and I am playing more advanced pieces than they are. My point is hard work and love for art triumphs over the quality of tools and available budget. Money can only get you so far in life.

You're absolutely right about the encouragement. I have a number of college degrees, more than three, but for every single one of them I treated myself to a relatively nice pen. It was such an excitement that I would go to the lecture hall and take notes with that special pen dedicated to that specific University, and then I would solve problems on engineering paper using that special ink that became my signature and that special pen. And then for the next degree it was a new "good pen" for that curriculum. I continued during my after college years with pen for this and that "license exams" prep work etc. So most of my pens are dedicated to a cause and then retired after it was achieved.

Even though I haven’t used more expensive pens, but I cannot imagine an experience much better than that of the custom 823. Wealth inequality, mostly. Of course it is infuriating to people making pennies if their employeer or landlord is using the fruits of their labour on extravagances. Same criticism people have about cathedrals or the pyramids. No one is living humbly except for their 1500 dollar pen lol. I think while people are extorted for their labour and grossly underpaid and overworked, products designed exclusively for the rich who oppress them will always be viewed with suspicion, despite their exquisite materials or craftsmanship. I think a person who looks for an expensive fountain pen to be a better art tool misunderstands fountain pens. Unless you're going for a certain class of vintage pen, they're not designed for the kind of expressiveness of line that, say, various kinds of dip pens or brushes can deliver. A $25 fountain pen vs. a $1500 fountain pen, in terms of the quality of putting a line down on the page, is waaaaaaay less of a difference than a Kolinsky sable brush vs. a student-grade synthetic brush. However, any expensive tool can help in the sense that, if they're especially beautiful to look at and feel especially luxurious in the hand, it can make you want to use them more, and art/writing/etc. all get better the more you do them. A lot of people pooh-pooh the idea of spending that much money on a pen, but I look at people who lust after expensive watches or cars and really don't see the point of having anything more than a reliable Timex and a rock-solid Honda. I mean, nothing that I *need* a watch or car for will be delivered *more* by spending that much more money for luxury. But I get that people derive pleasure from having luxurious things that give them pleasure to use. Pens are no different. I haven't gotten to the point of spending $1500 for a pen, but I'm not going to say I'll never get there. An urushi pen made by a master is just a beautiful piece of traditional craftsmanship that you can enjoy intimately on a daily basis, and I can absolutely understand valuing that and being willing to pay for it.

Well, I invested in a nice variety of Tombow watercolor brush pens that inspired me to make better more careful art. I suppose they are a luxury since I already had some tubes of color. As a side note maybe they could make a $3000 pen from moonrock with nibs of hardened goat spider silk..hmm

For me, i like to have all kind of pens, brushes and pencils, cheap and fancy, and the same with paper. Lots of cheap paper, some good blocks and some top of the line, and i go through all of them depending the mood or task at hand or whatever. But the most relevant thing for my inspiration has nothing to do with materials but with the time of the day. From 12 midnight to 4 am i'm "in the zone". During the day i can do some studies, sketches etc and nothing that requires creativity and "magic".

I agree with your conclusions. I've bought expensive writing utensils to help inspire and motivate me to draw more, but ultimately it doesn't work and puts pressure to perform on a higher level. I find I do the best work when the tools get out of the way and I don't even notice them. So a more comfortable pencil or pen with the right lead and ink is better than a pretty one or one of exotic materials. I don't want to be thinking about it rolling off the table, or getting scratched, or care if it does.

Hey peter, May I send you three vintage pens to try out? I’d pick three that have differing nibs which I’d love to see how they work in you hands! Let me know.... your fellow dra-wer, Pier

A picture helps inspire me more than a new pen though I can't wait for my new pen to arrive

Love writing with a nice M800 or M1000 Pelikan, I think that it is inspirational if you are a writer. I wouldn’t use a $1500 pen for drawing, frankly, but it might be useful for creative writing; I think that the writing instrument does help in formulating imaginative ideas on paper, the tactile feel of a really nice nib on paper is definitely an asset. Cheers.

It's a beautiful pen no doubt but I'm certain my Lamy 2000 or Lamy CP1 would produce the same result. Beautiful pen, and drawings; Thanks!

I have a namiki Urushi fountain pen, I saved to buy it and it’s stunning. And then I use my Twsbi Eco and put the namiki back safely in its box.

what (materialistic thing) helps me is to find the right sketchbook, as an example i hate spiral bound sketchbooks they make me feel like i have to rip out the pages if they are ugly instead of appreciating the ugly bits as process

Meanwhile, dislike glue/staple bound for not lying flat. It seems to help to dedicate a medium to a sketchbook as well... less... decision making. ^^&

Peter, if you do a drawing with dip pen again, I think you should try Deleter ink, I think you would like it.

I don't think the price I pay for a tool inspires or psychs me out at all. If it actually performs better, and I know what I need to learn to do to take advantage of it, then it does. Example: technical pen with a very fine nib has allowed me to learn shading techniques that wouldn't be effective with a broader nib. Also: quality paper that works with specific watercolor techniques. Something that totally does psych me out: store bought sketchbooks. I feel SO MUCH pressure to make everything I draw or sketch in them be really good, it's almost all garbage. Not as much with sketchbooks I make, but there is still a lot of pressure. Probably because I still don't consistently produce great art every time. I abandon many many loose sheets of paper.
