Will Bosnia-Herzegovina soon be at war again? Almost three decades after the end of the Bosnian war, the country is a new EU candidate. But the situation here is more fragile than ever. Who will prevail in multi-ethnic but divided Bosnia?
In December 2022, some three million Bosnians received hopeful news: after years of waiting, the small multi-ethnic Balkan state is finally an EU candidate. However, peace in the Western Balkans is more fragile than at any time since the end of the Bosnian War in 1995, which left 100,000 dead and hundreds of thousands displaced.
Might Putin be trying to open a second front in the divided country? Why is Bosnia so central to so many geopolitical desires - both in the West (EU, UK, USA) and in places like Russia, Serbia, China and Turkey? And why is the country still suffering from the complex legacy of the 1995 Dayton Peace Agreement?
Interviews with the main players then and now unravel the secessionist aspirations of the Bosnian Serbs, the influence of EU member Croatia on the country and Bosnia’s structures of corruption. Bosnia-Herzegovina is the land of three peoples: Bosniaks, Serbs and Croats. It’s a meeting point of the Muslim, Orthodox, Christian and Jewish worlds. And it’s a place that shows that while it is difficult to end a war, it’s even more difficult to make a lasting peace.

It’s a bit disingenuous for DW to claim that Bosnia’s constitution isn’t democratic or provide individual rights when that’s the price Bosnia has to pay for having a unitary state. If Bosnian Muslims want a unitary state then they should let the Bosnian Serbs have their independence. Every time the Bosnian Muslim majority pushes for a centralized state - which they would control - then that pushes the Bosnian Serbs to seek independence.

And during SFRJ Yugoslavia (you can check) there were no Bosniaks, as I recall. There were Serbs, Croats and Muslims. By the way, the Muslims got the right to declare themselves like that from the 70's. Before that they had to declare themselves either as Croat or Serb. If there were no Ottoman empire invasion you wouldn't have such a big Muslim community. The nationality Bosniak is (re)introduced in the 90's.

@@ajdoshka Nobody ever talks about 3 side crimes, only one in every report. West stance cannot be neutral and objective since they also have to justify their involvement. Most of military incapable civilians were transferred with buses and alive even today, only men who could carry a weapon got death penalty for what they did before, were some innocent, probably, still that is not systematic extermination but retribution, you may think different but this is how it was. West also says there are many genders, I have seen only 2 so far, so not much credibility there.

The other problem in Bosnia and Herzegovina is that it is a clash of civilisations. The only way that country can continue long term is to reorganise that everyone in the country has full political and cultural rights. This isn't the case now and its causing problems in the country. All three main ethnic groups want very different things.

Very few people know that the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina could very easily have been avoided if the Muslim leadership, fronted by the Islamist Alija Izetbegovic, had not opted to pursue independent at all costs. History has shown that if they had waited some 10 years Bosnia could have left rump Yugoslavia the same way Montenegro did which is without a war and without any internal borders and entities. This is the truth that Bosniaks today avoid facing up to.

Why then not allow democratic referendum under supervission of international comunity, on which they can express their opinion - whether they want to live together or they want to separate. And allow those communities that want to separate to go on their own way. Democracy in action. Furthermore, the Soviets were allied with Hitler before he betrayed them, and they likely would have lost to the Germans without the American Lend-Lease.

When u divide people and then create artificial states by force, and people still feel wounded this is what happens. Everyone suffered in that war. And some thug politicians profited from it within these countries and abroad. This state will not work long term for the same reasons Yugoslavia failed. It would have been fine had people not become more polarized into beliefs that their "leaders" have triggered and keep feeding within them.

I´m in tears, back in 1995 I was a translator for a tv news company and I saw all the footage and news coming from Bosnia Herzegovina; it was devastating and heart-breaking. Now, to see this hatred and incapability of solving their core issues almost 30 years later, is so sad. My prayers and thoughts will be with this country. I hope that peace enters their minds and hearts, and that they never forget the horrors they lived through during that horrendous war. I know that still many survivors are living with the consecuences of it. Please, spare these new generations of the horror of war.
