Something that gets forgotten with the Sharks is that they only started their rebuild during the 22-23 season. Up until then they were competing in earnest to make the playoffs and avoid a rebuild before Grier finally pulled the trigger on tearing things down, which was clearly the right call.
@kryten098 күн бұрын
Lol yup. The dreaded "retool". The real rebuild is only like 2 years old.
@ronhyde8 күн бұрын
Great point. Making the playoffs in 19 of 21 seasons and always being competitive was the price they were willing to pay--win NOW!...3 WCF and a SC Final was worth it for those years..However, the back end and the re-tool is tough. When they're winning, they're sold out and a great, loud atmosphere. When they're not... like past few years, empty seats aplenty.

@@MagicalTrev88 Thank you! People seem to think the sharks have been rebuilding for the last 5 years but we didn’t even get started until Grier took over. I’m honestly so impressed with what he’s accomplished in such a short time given what he inherited. Another year or two and the last of those horrible Doug Wilson contracts will finally be gone. 🙏

Don't forget Luca Cagnoni who's a PPG in the AHL, Kasper Haltunnen, Igor Chernyshov (been injured), Nate Misskey (looking like a late round steal PPG in WHL) and Erik Pohlkamp who leads all Denver defenseman in points over Zeev Buium!! The prospect pool is even deeper than listed! Improvement is all we are looking for this season, and adding another top 5 talent to this group.

@@Retr-vc4wn I have, yes. Dickinson is creative offensively and is a great, mobile skater for his size. I think he will be a solid NHLer if he can round out his defensive game which does have some holes in it right now. I just think Zeev out classes him with his hockey IQ and offensive ability/vision. I think he’ll end up being a *better* NHLer. Of course only time will tell, and I hope I’m wrong but that’s my take on it.

@@rawzuccsauce4202I was praying that Buium would still be available at the draft and disappointed with the Dickinson pick. BUT, Cagnoni is looking like the real deal and plays a very similar game to Buium. Meanwhile, Dickinson is an absolute beast and scoring at will right now. I’m liking how things worked out. Plus, Pohlkamp is looking like the top dawg in Denver now. Go Shaaaaawks!!

More competitive... Chemistry between the players building. Actually seeing systems being used... We're all realistic of where the sharks are... They're progressing. As a fan, I love that they're fighting till the very end most nights. Felt like they gave up in the 1st period a lot last season. By the end of the season, I'd love if the sharks were known as that "pesky team" that could possibly play spoiler to playoff bubble teams. Oh and like others mentioned, sharks lost to the flyers in the shootout. But still.... They came back from 3-0 to tie it. That wouldn't have happened last season. Improvement.

As a lomgtime Sharks fan, I think you're right that they are past their absolute nadir...but they still have lots of problems. They aren't scoring enough, their power play has gone cold, and their D continues to make giveaways in the D zone and offers zero offensive punch. THe bright spots?Their top 6 and the emergence of Walman and Thompson on D, as well as above average goaltending, which has already stolen them a couple of games....I'm not as optimistic as you that their win streak will continue apace -but at least they're not getting blown out regularly anymore. That's progress.

The defense/goaltending is certainly better (except for a couple last night that Vanachek just sort of waved at). You can tell though that it's still work in progress on offense. They forecheck better, but they just don't get much offensive zone time (generally) and struggle to move the puck to get good scoring opportunities. I admit the games I have watched are a small sample size. Being on the east coast I'm in bed way before games on the west coast get started. I lived in central California back when they came into the league, so they are still "my" team, and I hope they get back to winning form sooner rather than later.

Hey HG, As a long time Sharks fan through thick and thin it looks to me like we are just beginning to see the guys start to coalesce. I think this is the beginning of this roster finding chemistry and cohesion and I suspect by the all star break we will have a much clearer idea of this teams ceiling this season. We are still fiddling with the lines and pairings but, I was very happy to see Coach Wars reunite the "Lund Line." I think they are a solid group that already has established chemistry and gives us at least one line in the bag that is stable and is likely to improve as the season goes on. Will Smith is showing flashes here and there but, he is still adjusting to the NHL. Celebrini looks like he belongs. Pretty incredible to watch such a young and talented players. I think our defensive corps is beginning to look like there is something cooking that might work. I suspect that 60 pts is probably a reasonable expectation for this season. I suspect we a re likely to finish bottom 3 barring major injury trouble and depending on which players we trade by the deadline. Things are definitely looking up these days. The San Jose Sharks are 3 years away from being a solid NHL team. Currently, many players on the roster are marginal NHL players, and the players they are counting on to do big things are still too undeveloped. The three D-men who would not be on any legitimate roster are Ferraro, Rutta, and sadly, Vlasic. Walman and Ceci are serviceable, and possibly Walman may stick, but I consider them bridge guys. I think Thrun and Thompson will be solid 2nd and 3rd pairing guys. Liljegran may stick. Dickinson, Mukhamadullin and Cagnoni are expected to make the roster within 2-3 years if not sooner for Mukhamadullin. Dickinson projects to a 1st/2nd pairing...we hope. The goalie situation seems to be whoever gains the most value between Blackwood and Vanecek will be traded, the other should be the backup, and the eventual starter will be Askarov. Again, this could be a 1-2 year development. Lastly, the forwards have a lot of journeymen and fringe guys. Kostin, Givani Smith, Grundstrom and Nico Sturm don't move the needle. They will be gone. Goodrow and Kunin are serviceable 4th liners. Dellandrea and Wennberg are 3rd/4th liners. 6 fourth line guys and two who are borderline 3/4 liners. Guschkin and Cardwell will replace some of them. The bridge guys are Granlund, Tafolli and Zetterlund - maybe a couple of these stick depending on the development of Bystedt, Bordeleau, Musty etc...and of course the core future guys being Smith, Celebrini and Eklund. I doubt we see Couture again. Again, 2-3 years at earliest. I still respect all of them - even the low-tier 4th line grinders. What I would give for an Owen Nolan/Rick Tocchet type prospect to play on Celebrini's wing. 30 and 30 and enough grit to put a guy into the boards and drop the gloves if needed. Maybe Musty? I don't know. Porter Martone might fit the bill. Do they still make power forwards the way they used to? I'm getting old.

They likely bottomed out last season. They are exactly where they were two years ago. Yes, they nearly tied their game against Vancouver; but they did so with over a minute to go and then broke down in the final minute. Bad things happen to bad hockey teams. Turning those regulation losses into a point or two will be the key to this team's improvement. I think they will do so over last season, but for now, wait until 2025-26.

Compared to last season the overall roster looks much better. I still think doing a full rebuild where you get insurance on all draft picks is the safer and smarter way to go. Grier did the opposite of that with the Lily trade. Steve Dangle said the sharks overpaid. I would have tried to talk Grier out of that one. I hope Lily is a star sharks player now of course. Getting a 2nd to take Walman is the type of move I would do myself. Cap dump trades are good for bad teams to take advantage of. Grier has made the sharks at least be watchable and I give him that.
