After decades in power, Robert Mugabe has been forced to surrender the presidency, but his party remains firmly in charge. Given its record of economic incompetence and disregard for human rights, don't the people of Zimbabwe deserve better than ZANU-PF? Tim Sebastian meets the ruling ZANU-PF party's UK chairman, Nick Mangwana.
Conflict Zone is Deutsche Welle's top political interview. Every week, our hosts Tim Sebastian and Michel Friedman are face-to-face with global decision-makers, seeking straight answers to straight questions, putting the spotlight on controversial issues and calling the powerful to account.

A message to Nick Mangwana and Mugabe’s conquerors, you did not remove him for the sake of the nation. You did it for your selfish ends as he was no longer serving purpose, too sleepy and not discussing who would take over from him. If you had the nation at heart, why did the army not descend on him when the land was grabbed and votes stolen in the last 37 years. Why were the army intimidating people all these years if they were serving the nation’s interests? In a democracy, Munangagwa should not have taken office, considering atrocities in Matabeleland. We will never forget his ruthlessness then. Mangwana, you must bury your head in shame. Zimbabwe is in tatters because of ZANU PF. Where is the 15 billion dollars from the diamonds? You say mistakes were made, and if that is so, everyone must step down so the young can rule. No one above 55 years old should ever be allowed to run that country ever again. ZANU PF has failed to run the country. At the next election, can they all retire please. That little nation has a lot of young people who can run it well without you and the army telling us that we need liberation war background. Is it our fault that we were young or not even born when war was fought. Step aside and allow the nation to flourish. NO ONE is bigger than Zimbabwe, including those that think it is their right to rule. In Shone we say, “Ushe madzoro hunoravanwa” You do not hold onto power as if you own the country. How about all these old men and women watching from the sidelines and see how the young do it?

muswere What justice are you talking about hanzvadzi? Everything was blamed on the white men of Britain and USA, do you know why? To divert everyone's attention from mismanagement of the economy, the plunder and pilf and human rights abuses. Open your eyes. Even after the land grab and the shops were empty, the British and Americans were blamed for it. You just wonder how an economy could feed all its people and other nations could fall dramatically like that!

Mugabe could have resigned in 1980. He would would be feted today as a great leader and somebody who brought people together. Statues abound of him the world over. He could have resigned after 1 term, he would still be remembered affectionately and with great fondness, even with Gukurahundi. But he hung needlessly on for so long he will be remembered for rampant corruption, brutal repression of dissent ,economic catastrophe, cholera, hyperinflation , 90% unemployment and 15 billion dollars of missing diamond revenues! He wrote his own obituary As far as freedom from colonization goes, Chitepo and Nkomo both did far more than Mugabe. But the true heroes are those who lost their lives before 1980 , not those lapping up all the glory for the last 37 years.

Ya, but you may be politically naive or talking from the overseas /diaspora point of view. Mature as we are, we do not want to set presidency for revenge, which encourages presidents to remain or fight to die in power because fear prosecution. We did not do it to Ian Smith and its unwise to do it to Mugabe again.

I am speaking from the point of view of a local Zimbabwean who was force-marched to profess illiteracy at a polling station in order to vote for Zanu pf after my house had been burnt in 2008. How come you paint all of us with the same brush? I could be naive but I lost a close friend simply because he was an opposition agent in 2008 election. If you are living the good life and Mugabe gave you everything then stop speaking on our behalf.
@glmstar

Thanks for the reply. Though I agree with you in terms of ZANU PF using hard handedness at times during election time(this I blame on Ian Smith though, who introduced these hash tactics in Rhodesia which was otherwise less cruel), ... I differ with you on the overview and long term solution . That's why I have said you are either in diaspora or naive. The thing is, you would not find a political solution to the situation you described above through retribution. If you follow that path you create hate and desire to revenge that never ends. On the other hand the ones in power would cling to it knowing that after they retire retribution would be coming their way. Guess you get me right. The last sentence in your comment obscures your otherwise good argument. I am neither of those things. Show less REPLY
