@@TheZombieSaints Black Powder existed for centuries before Chemistry could actually calculate what the blend should actually be. They would try something different and it might work a little better, so they changed how they made it. The original "Serpentine" powder was not only dust and not granules but had way too little oxidizer, and that was a very impure crudely made compound. The 15-3-2 mix, usually called 75-15-10, is very close to ideal, but the 77-13-8 mixture should have the right amount of every chemical present to burn completely, but the charcoal is still a variable. From what I have learned here and the minor in Chemistry I got 44 years ago the best formula would seem to be (1), 77-13-8, (2) Charcoal made from TP, (3) three full days of mill time, and (4) proper compression & granulation.

You should talk to your Chem friend about doing spectroscopy on different charcoals/ woods. Or if you make an announcement, any rock star science college student looking for a project could do it. If I still had access to the equipment, I would. Spectroscopy basically analyzes individual atoms/molecules in a substance, and lets you know what's in the substance and how much of it is in there. This might allow you to ID what specifically in the wood/ charcoal makes it fast or clean. This info would then allow you to make predictions about how a certain wood will preform, before you try it.

Even if the stoichiometry is perfect, the result of the combustion of black powder will always leave something close to 50% residue. Fortunately, most of it comes out of the barrel in the form of smoke. Adding the same amount of cornmeal to the black powder not only seals the ball better, but also cleans the barrel.
@joearledge
@joearledge Ай бұрын
Think of stoichiometric as having the exact number of parts to assemble a piece of furniture from Walmart, so that you don't come up short or have anything left over, just your new coffee table, nothing more, nothing less. The "parts" are atoms in the chem reaction, and the "table" is the chem reaction itself(burning powder in this application). If you don't have enough of 1 part, you might still be able to make a table but it's going to be lacking something(strength, a shelf, a drawer handle, ect...). In this application, you can make the powder, but it's lacking in some way. If you have too many of 1 part, you chuck those in the spare parts bucket. In this context, the "spare parts bucket" is your barrel, so left over parts = extra fouling. Not a perfect analogy, but hopefully it helps someone understand the concept a little better.

Amateur chemist here. The reason it doesn't matter as much as you think is because black powder burns carbon in incomplete combustion. Why is this important? Because carbon can combust both to CO (monoxide) and CO2 (dioxide), and the monoxide has a greater energy-content per bond than the dioxide has. If you overdose the carbon you get more monoxide and if you underdose you get more dioxide. The extra energy per bond and reduced oxygen-demand compensates for the incomplete combustion. Up to a point.

A stoycheometric burn is “the most efficient FULL burning of fuel” On combustion engines like gas and diesel, we shoot for this but, a few percent more fuel, which provides a clean but not too hot of a burn. The fuel acts as a coolant. A oxygen rich engine burns hot, like a oxy torch. We see this “slightly rich” Burn in light brown hazy exhaust. In black powder, I have no clue, but you definately can tweak the ratios to get a oxygen rich burn or a fuel rich burn. The oxygen rich burn might provide better cleanliness but the lack of fuel might reduce velocity. My guess and 2c before the video

Hi Jake. Been parallelling you where I live for quite while with antique propellant with similar results to you. Charcoal sources are different but getting similar results with what you have. One thing I tried that you may be interested in is that we press pucks without adding water at all. I use a press with a pressure gauge and press to 10 tonne metric until gauge shows no drop at all. We get densities from 1.7 to 1.9 Gr/CC. Pucks are hard as steel and do take some breaking up. Then use identical method for grinding pucks as you do. Clean and fast burning. I have a 44-40 as well and 40gr just fills case to neck. Yet to shoot it in this rifle but I have a long range target rifle and it is accurate out to over 500 yards with this powder. We have just enough humidity in the air to ensure pucks hold together well. I use virtually identical piston and die that you do. Just try a puck or two with no added water and you may be surprised.

Hey Jake, I cannot confirm what I am about to say, however, you are supposed to be able to obtain 1,000FPS of velocity out of an 1851/1861 Navy .36 caliber at 25 grains of 3FG powder. Now as I understand that is with a .357 round ball, and I think either the 5inch or 7.5inch barrel not sure which barrel it was exactly with the info I found. Now I stumbled across that bit of information while trying to compare the pressure curve of a .380 acp to that of the .36 caliber, for an 1862 Pocket Navy with a .380 acp conversion cylinder. Now I have shot 30 and 35 grains out of my 1860 Army .44, so that 970 maybe accurate if you are using a .44 caliber revolver.

hey Jake Allen makes a descent chrony!! that might be the battery i've got a Caldwell that does that when the battery gets weak!! maybe a dab of threadlocker on the flint dog screw?if it's just the flint slipping out a thin piece of leather helps there!!

I believe during the opium wars the British thought the Chinse gunpowder was terrible, partly beacuse they didn't corn it properly but also because they thought it had to much potassium nitrate and that caused it to absorb moisture to easily and become less effective.

cleaner makes sense assuming the chemical reaction is complete.. your formula leaves more potassium, carbon and sulfur behind because it don't oxidize (burn) per the chart.. Thanks for showing this as my college chemistry was so long ago, i couldn't remember any of that!!

A long time ago when I was writing an article about the Battle of Lepanto between the Ottomans and the combined Cristian fleet -- I focused heavily on the 6 heavily-cannoned Venetian Galleases that forced the Ottoman ships into narrow channels to avoid their cannon-fire which was far in excess of their own. (That was background, sorry). I read some 'very very old' books from the original sources talking about their powder formula in those days which was 75/12.5/12.5. In other words, more sulphur than you use. (Perhaps large bore cannons are relatively easier to clean than muskets). Of course, they didn't have access to a quality source of chemicals. For instance, they got their salt peter from scraping moist tombstones -- which imparted a 'black arts' flavor to their black powder.

@Everythingblackpowder You guys may be onto something! I came across this article! "The Swiss is a true sporting powder it's chemical rate of burn where the grain burns from the surface inward until the grain is consumed. The Swiss powder is able to produce a maximum gas temperature of about 2200 degrees. A rifle type powder, such as GOEX, has a slower chemical rate of burn and is only able to produce a maximum gas temperature of around 1800 degrees. There are differences in the properties of the respective charcoals used in each. Generally the faster burning sporting powders use a higher amount of potassium nitrate and a reduced amount of charcoal. That is playing with the volume of gas evolved and the temperature of that gas. The sporting type powder based on 78 parts of potassium nitrate, versus 75 parts in rifle powders, with a lesser amount of charcoal produce a lower volume of gases but a good deal hotter. With a sporting type powder in the bore, versus rifle or musket, you get a faster pressure rise and a faster pressure drop up the bore." Further research: So Bill Knight, aka The Mad Monk, discovered that Swiss black powder is a 78:12:10 formula milled for at least 24 hours. The Buckthorn alder is all harvested in the early spring when the sugar content is the highest and dried/aged 3 years. Charring is performed at 608 degrees for 8 hours!

Recent laboratory experiments conducted at the United States Military Academy add additional points of data that in combination with what has already been presented should suffice to lay the matter to rest. Your videos never suck, some are more comical than others but all are at the very least fun. On your ratios...does it stand to reason that the lower the sulpher content the lower the sulferic acid containing compounts you are going to get with humidity and residue? I have long thought that was a big part of why people expous BP as being so corrosive. I personally feel that even with no ballistic improvement anything we can do to reduce sulpher the better.

I understand that the Swiss Aubonne black powder uses the higher saltpetre value to have more oxygen to burn the charcoal at a higher temperature which raises the pressure. There are mixes which greatly reduce the smoke by eliminating the sulphur but would be unreliable to ignite from a flintlock pan but maybe some form of duplex load of normal black powder followed by the semi smokeless black powder might work perhaps?

Jake..... as I have heard of sulphur free BP, why not try 6 or even 5% and see where that goes? There must be a point at which something doesn't work as well with low sulphur or surely it would not be in common use as it is.... The high mill time sure does even things out vis a vis different charcoals though. I'd say you have the best data set on this subject post 19th century. A lot of the old lore got lost I think, I have a book about the British Army factory at Waltham Abbey where they made all the BP back in the day. Before I came to live in NZ in 1959 I used to go fishing in that area... nice spot. The factory went 'bang' eventually as many seemed to do, and I would posit that the issue was the huge cast iron wheel mills they used. Just a grain of sand in the mix would be enough in a dry milling process to cause that fatal spark. Keep up the good work my friend. Your videos are informative and thought provoking. I plan to make a press to compact the powder as you do. It does have its downside as you must know, but the fines can always be re-milled I suppose. My mill balls are pure linotype and they seem to wear very little compared to lead. You use brass I believe... I'd have to make those... expensive..... but the lino seems to work pretty well. Cheers... 🙂

Im definitely about clean burning propellant, all reloaders should be considering this as supply/availability is going to be tight going forward. What you are doing is awesome, but why not take it to the next level and try out fuels like ascorbic acid, sodium benzoate, glutaric acid? Oxidizers like guanidine nitrate that produce more gas, less solids? Traditional smitional- chance favors the prepared mind. BTW another way to look at stoichiometric is the ideal ratio that produces exothermic reactions and minimizes endothermic, re-combinate reactions. Oxide and solids formation takes energy out, gas products are ideal and create more pressure/velocity. BP substitutes are going to be important in the future, power to the masses. I'm all about collaboration if you want recipes to try out- my YT channel is limited but I occasionally upload vids of diy propellant and primer tests. Rock on Jake

Stoichiometric ratios in combustion work perfectly in a perfect world. If every molecule of one chemical gets a chance at combining with every one of the other chemical it is superior. In real life, turbulence, chance, impurities, and other factors prevent all these perfect meetings. Your usual 77-13-10 is close enough to perfect that the imperfection of real world combustion outweighs the imperfection or perfection of the ratio.
