My friend came home to find her Bull Mastiff, in the yard, his mouth gently around the neck of large, supine man. It was the meter reader, who'd taken upon himself to open the gate & enter the yard. He wasn't injured, at all, not even any broken skin. He'd been there for six hours.

The Bull Mastiffs I had growing up were very aggressive at the front gate towards anyone that was coming to visit, until someone from the family came to the gate to let them in, once the dogs saw that they were greeted and accepted by one of us they backed right off and would go forward to say hello and then they would be more than comfortable with their presence in their territory, different story when it was someone that we didn`t know at the gate, but they would quieten down but not get behind us, they would remain in place between them, the gate and us...very very good guard dogs and very good at naturally reading body language between their people and people that entered their territory...

I'm on my second English Mastiff. She was recently present at a spontaneous dog fight between a boxer and a beagle. She did not get involved. It was a very scary moment but very proud that she didn't react. She is very loving to her family and makes strangers take a step back which I really like. My first English Mastiff made a police officer take a step back. She definitely got his attention. So funny!

I oned 2 Great Pyrenees and one day my mom and I spent all day Xmas shopping. But that day we had thunderstorms all day. When we got home we found a police officer waiting in the driveway and we were freaking out thinking someone maybe broke in and hurt the dogs. The cop said alarms had been going off all over the county because of the thunder rattling the windows setting off the glass sensors. He said they had checked the homes for break-ins. When he got to ours a neighbor stepped out and warned him not to go near the window but he did. H said the next thing he knew was 2 of the largest and most pissed-off dogs he had ever seen charged the glass. He said I knew no one was in there at least no one alive and if they were he wasn't dumb enough or brave enough to go get them out. They are a mastiff offshoot bread to protect herds from wolves. They will intervene and attack to defend what is theirs. Very patient and loving with kids. My friend would leave her toddlers with them while we worked in the yard.

Kind of the look like she she’s saying in her head “who the hell is this little shit” hell my dog sits out in the front yard on nice days and dog walkers will come by and the dog walkers dogs will get riled up and mine will just stay in the yard and almost ignore them.
@hauddubius3706

I'd say they're more the type of guard dog that instead of charging at the aggressor would simply put themselves between you and the aggressor. So it's less likely they would have to attack as most people are going to be put off by their sheer size when they stand tall and proud in front of you. But make no mistake, the person would still have to get through these guys before they could get to you. Of course a gun changes everything, as it would any guard dog.

The Xmas turkey went into the fridge after the Xmas celebrations the next day Argus and there cat teamed up. Cat opened fridge and Argus pulled the turkey out and they were Found munching down on the turkey together in the kitchen lol. But you are so right about both breeds. I had a beautiful fawn coloured bullmastiff that was both a show dog and a wonderful family pet. He was both a Canadian and US champion, and of all the dogs I have had he was the easiest to train. The only negative to the breed is like other giant breeds they have a relative short lifespan of likely around eight years. I highly recommend the breed to families with young children.

@thrashmammothdan
@thrashmammothdan 2 жыл бұрын
@@mauricioornelas2603 It all depends on what you want. If you want a natural guardian, than yes. Thats the big difference to me other than size. Both are mammoths, but the bullmastiff is definitely sharper and quicker to check out anything that goes bump in the night. They won't attack, they don't need to, a bark alone is enough, and that's commonly what you get. You can't turn it off though, beware, as sometimes when you get jolted awake over tin can blowing down the street you wish you could. They are big babies to the family and friends. Sometimes a bit too boisterous as well. Mines super jolly and smiley all the time, but very quick to react to perceived threats. Bulls are a bit more stubborn than the English but all part of the fun in owning them.

Having large breed dogs all my life (over 100 pounds) at me now 70 I just put my Bullmastiff down at 13 years old. Going from 3 Danes and a Stbernard and Remi my last Bullmastiff I only keep them 1 at a time so they always had the complete run of the house alone. I do agree getting them from a puppy and fully training them from the get go is a very wise way to go. My concern now is at my age me being able to control a new puppy up to 4 years old and raise them to be a proper addition to my home might be found to be very difficult at my age. I feel they become much better dogs from 6 years on as they tend to understand the owner is their supplier of food and they tend to watch & protect the owner more from around 6 years old. They are a real hand full under 6 as they just want to play rough and be a total clown, not that that is bad but makes it hard to control when training. I REALLY am worried about the control issue as a puppy at my age to get a new replacement. However, with crime rising it's very important to have another Mastiff on the property as with my last Mastiff my home was the only house that was never broke into.

During our years in Mastiff Rescue when we lived in the States, we had plenty to do with both breeds. I want to emphasize what you said about the Bullmastiff's guarding instincts kicking in at about a year. We found that to be quite true. That's why socialization when they are very young is essential. English Mastiffs are just darlings. They would always put themselves between my wife and any guests they didn't know, just to be on the safe side. As a husband, that was one of their most appealing traits. They behaved perfectly, just wanting to be a barrier. They would sleep soundly, knowing they were available it the Mrs. needed assistance. We did have one big brindle boy who was raised as a bait dog in a fighting ring. He was much more unpredictable. He was great with us, but with strangers, he had to be managed very well until he really knew them and trusted them. Such is the nature of Rescue. I recommend both breeds with all my heart. I love when you do videos on these breeds. Thanks.

As far as trainability, are bullmastiffs better to learn the basics and just naturally fall in line, but on their terms? For example I have a blue heeler pitbull mix, that's wicked smart. I can teach her things to the point of just knowing it in 3 tries. But sometimes she does things right away like if I'm telling her it's potty time she rushes to the door, but other times she'll sit at the top of the stairs and just stare blankly then eventually mosey down stretch with a "I guess I'll go out now" kind of attitude lol. I actually find it hilarious, especially when she demands to go out and throws a shoe at you lol. I have never met a BM but I kind of imagine that is the stubbornness everyone talks about. Would you say that sounds about right?

@@mauricioornelas2603 great question. I've had both, and I love both. IMO, the English Mastiff is the better family dog. But not by much. Both breeds are snuggle bugs. We have owned 2 Bullies and fostered a 3rd. They are indeed stubborn but make up for it by being incredibly loving. They absolutely will put themselves between you and anyone they don't know and mine seemed to enjoy the opportunity to be alert and on duty. They are working dogs after all. They crave attention but if you are sitting and are not loving on them they will be content to lay next to you, contacting you in some way; normally a paw on your foot. Mine also liked to slide down my shins and lay on my feet. From experience I will say this, if you can get them through their 7th year you will probably have them for 2 to 3 more years. The 7th year seems to be the stumbling block for this breed. We currently have a wonderful Bassett Hound but do hope go down the path of a Bully again.

Love your channel and everything you're doing to educate dog owners. Please help correct the common misconception of the Bullmastiff's size. No adult male bullmastiff weighs 130lbs unless its being starved to death. Females are rarely that small. Adult male BMs are 150-180lbs and Females are 125-145lbs. Look at any show winner and that's what you'll see. BM's may have been that small decades ago but they are much larger than the oft quoted M 110-130, F 90-110lbs. Thanks

I lost my bullmastiff 2 years ago. He was the best boy ever. So good with my kids. My youngest was only 3 when we got him as a puppy. She had this little rocking chair she would sit in, eating cheese. That big bullmastiff puppy would belly crawl over to her until his muzzle could just touch her foot and then he would gently lick her big toe. She'd giggle and give him just a crumb of cheese. This would go on and on. Never did he jump on her or overpower her to take the cheese. They grew up together until he passed away at the age of 10. He guarded my kids like that was his job and he never hurt one of them, even on accident. He seemed to have an innate sense with kids and fragile adults and was especially gentle with them. But I saw him in protection mode a few times and I'm really not convinced he would have only knocked the guy trying to break into my house down, and held him there. It's a good thing that tweaker could run.

What is the ideal weight for a female bull mastiff that just turned 1 years old? Mine I believe is to skinny especially in her back legs. She is my baby girl and very picky, very protective and one of the best dogs I've ever had. I've got her trained well with just basic training. But I've also got a bit bull male that she gets along with, but now that she has gotten older she is attacking my other female dog that is a boxer terrier mix, she is alot smaller then my mastiff and has been with her since she was 1 month old.. now that my mastiff has gotten bigger and older she keeps attacking my other female. So I was just asking for some help and advice for that aswell. Thank you

I'm in the process of buying a house on 4 acres. I have a female Bull Terrier, soft as a brush, and have been wanting to get another dog or two. I've been looking at adoption and have seen some Bull and English Mastiffs. How are they with being introduced to another dog of the house? If I got one, female or male? Should I really consider adoption or get one as a puppy? I understand by getting a puppy you are starting at the beginning for training, but could an adopted mastiff be a success? Great video.

The large breeds naturally often will insert itself between its family and things it considers a possible threat. Large breeds use their size to corner a threat and wait for directions. These are generalizations, and if u want it to perform specific tasks, you can train it to do what you want.

Will, I saw your podcast on KZbin of May, 2020, would you and your wife discussing the loss of your Bullmastiff Millie. I'm touched by your loss it was the same for me and my white Boxer Baby HueyEtta and my American Staffordshire Terrier Lovie Dovie. For each was felt unfathomable feelings of loss for a loving, gentle, protective soul who would fight lions, tigers and bears just save the ones she loves and to keep them safe. The first was omniscient and would not let you know there was trouble until it was absolutely necessary for her to act she would go from Jester to White Knight in a second and would even protect people who have been allowed in the home especially those who were a dog sitter for her when I was on vacation. The latter, She went into every room before me, checked it out and returned for me to catch up and once I was there, turned her back to me and watched the opening to that room guarding against all comers. I never taught her this, oh, and she would inspect every blade of grass as if she had OCD. She ranged and protected the perimeter of our yard and when she was satisfied, and only when she was satisfied, would she come when I called her, it was her sworn, solemn self- appointed duty mind you - unless I said "Come NOW, get a TREAT". That is the only thing in the world that would interrupt her work! Those were independent thinkers that would disobey you IF you didn't know what was going on, BUT they did. I'm pretty sure you would like that sort of protector for your family and I've done a great lot of research into many different types of dogs and as far as family and protection and mellow both my boxer and Amstaff learned to be bored they were crate trained and they were what I called chill but will dogs they would chill with me or be willing to get up and go anywhere or engage with any possible threat in a heartbeat. Like you, I am searching for a longer-lived dog with no health issues beyond some minor decrepitus with age past 10yrs. There is not a lot good that can be said for AKC and UKC breeds that have been around for ages, unless you know the breeder breeds AWAY from certain genetic faults & diseases that are known to affect the particular breed. There is, on the other hand, MUCH to be said for Hybrid Vigour. So if you are considering getting a Mastiff I know you mean English Mastiff, consider the American Mastiff or find someone in the UK or near enough Middle East that has bred an English Mastiff with a Kangal or Anatolian Shepherd. That way it would not have to fly hopefully, or maybe the rules are different in UK about what is considered a brachycephalic dog. In the 80s, in Pennsylvania ~ United States ~ was begun the process of developing an American Mastiff. Now well-established, it resembles the English Mastiffs the way they looked in earlier centuries - long-legged, not that heavy of a body, no excess droopy skin except around the neck a little bit, but are, instead, tighter lipped, no droopy jowls or dewlaps, and the flews do not hang down nearly to their breastbone. You know what that means right? Way less drool! Your wife should love that! They are quite spry and fleet-of-foot, have quite a lot of endurance and because Kangal is a landrace dog, the health is in the genes of that whole survival-of-the-fittest thing. The Anatolian Shepherd, which many people argue is exactly the same dog has been bred down to be more mild-mannered and perhaps more obedient from the sources that I have read and heard, so then I should think that would be the softer of the two if a hybrid were to be bred. But the American Mastiff was bred of English Mastiff and Kangals, so there you have it. Surely, you could find somebody that crossed a Mastiff and an Anatolian? The American Mastiff live 12 to 15 years. The Amstaff lives 12 to 16 years, without being a hybrid. I had been thinking of crossing a Boxer with an American Staffordshire, hoping for the same Hybrid Vigour we got out of a German Shepherd + Chow Chow cross that live to be 18 or 19 years old. That breed mashup produced a dog the color of a golden retriever who looked like a very large Fox - all one color except for the blondish hair that peeked through of the undercoat. She had no excess of Flesh she had smaller erect ears a perfect athletic body, well angulated rear legs that had no hip dysplasia or luxating patella; she stood exactly on her paws and no other part of her legs, her pasterns were good and she did not stand on stiff back legs like the Chow or on her tippy toes as is the normal stance of a Chow Chow on its forelegs. The back was perfect, it was a perfect topline. the back was not as long as the German Shepherd's and it definitely did not have a banana slope in it. Tina was a more squarely built dog than the German Shepherd Dog itself and when she got arthritis from being stuck for many years on a ten-foot chain and not getting any exercise except for to run around in that circle as an outdoor only dog, all it took was a Labbeagle (escape artist) to run around the countryside with and she was brand new, and lived those extra 8 years. She had gotten depressed and they thought that she was going to die, when we adopted her from a family who was going overseas and they did not think she could make the trip and time in quarantines, etc. 18 yrs, Will. 18. Hybrid Vigour. Think about it....

Ancient Greek philosopher Srabo, forgive the spelling wrote about the English Mastiff stating, that the British dogs were more ferocious, bigger and quicker than their Greek counterparts. Even the Romans took the British dogs back to Rome to fight in their Amphitheatre. They must have been in the British Isles a lot longer than most give credit for.

English Mastiff was anything but slow and gentle before the official banning of bull and bear biting in England in 1835 which in turn led to selective breeding of the most docile dogs so to fight the perception of them as super ferocious giant beasties unacceptable for the changes in the society in this period... which they were at that time. This was the only way to save the breed{or some traits of it} which was on the brink of extinction. Pictures depicting them from that period shows dogs which resemble quite closely current days Boerboels.
