My German shepherd puppy likes to go lay by himself after playing. I sometimes think he’s more independent than I thought he’d be. He likes to go lay in corners, he’s very good in his crate too. He’s only 8 weeks old.

My husband and I just adopted a 2 year old GSD and I have been working on crate training her. She will now willingly go to her crate and sit/lay down for her reward (treats, food bowl, chew toy, stuffed Kong) but she still starts yelping/barking/pawing/biting the crate if we leave her in there for more than a few min. We try to ignore her attempts at getting what she wants and let her out when she “settles down”. If we leave her out of the crate while we are gone, she gets destructive. We always try to work with her after she has exercised but it doesn’t seem to make a difference. At this point, we cannot leave the house without her or have a few hours to ourselves to run errands/date night because she will bark the whole time we are gone or destroy the house. We are feeling overwhelmed/discouraged right now and need help 🙏🏼

My dog was a sheltie and absolutely hated the crate. I made it comfy and would put a kong with treats, etc but he got to the point where he showed us he was reliable out of the crate. At 6 months old! He was a fantastic dog. However I will still attempt the crate again with future dogs. Good tips!

Hey you guys, I have a German shepherd female that I adopted from an old teacher of mine at around 1 1/2 to 2 years old. Apparently, her daughter adopted her as a puppy but by no means had the time or funds to take proper care of her. Basically the first year and a half of my dogs life, she was locked in a metal cage because the original owners were never home. She has some under developed teeth and some chipped canines because she would get anxious and chew on the metal bars while they were gone. I adopted her and brought her home with me. She was scared of her own shadow the first few months and only started relaxing when I started letting her jump up on my bed and sleep with me. I socialize her at the park and pet store as much as possible and she's always done really great and is happy as can be. Never had her get into any fights or anything with other dogs even though she is a bit forward with trying to prove she's the alpha between new dogs. She doesn't fight them but she bites their cheeks and ears lightly to establish dominance i suppose. My question is, recently she started snapping her teeth at friends who would visit and try to come in my room. Is this a bad thing in the long run? Or is she just defending her "den?" Everywhere else she is just fine, excited to meet new people, and likes to be chased by other dogs that she meets. She's also terrified of chihuahuas. Its crazy because she ONLY does this if new people try to enter my bedroom. Anywhere else this behavior does NOT occur. Even 2 ft outside of my bedroom door! It's crazy. She's a really good dog and even on days where I work late and I can't let her out for damn near 10-12 hours, she never goes to the bathroom inside. She never tears stuff up. And on the plus side, she's ALWAYS laying on my bed with her tail wagging like crazy when I get home from work and she's happy to see me. She's just a really good girl in my opinion. My only concern is, what if she snaps at my niece (6YO) just for walking into my bedroom to pet her or get a toy or something. What would be some steps to mitigate this protective reaction? I don't want to wipe her personality of being a guard dog because I want her to be confident enough to defend our property if someone tries harming my family. But I also want her to be able to be calm and make logical decisions on her own based off of my emotional reactions. Side note: She listens very well to me if I call her away from something(Squirrel, deer, other dogs, people, etc.) I've only had one problem with her not listening and running away when I first got her. She got scared because I was yelling her name to come back to me and she got freaked out and took off thinking she was in trouble or something. It took me a bit to find her but when I did, she was calm as can be and followed me home. Since then, I've hardly had to even put her on a leash. She stays right next to me and just follows me around and ignores everything else that's going on around us.

Did no one reply to this comment ?!!! You need to establish leadership. Draw a line with that. Work on people coming into your room. She's being territorial, a kid can definitely get hurt. You need to let her know that's not acceptable behaviour. If maybe there's one of her toys in there, and she's guarding it, take up all toys and have her see you put them very away, when you are expecting to have guests. Spend the time working on this, get a willing adult helper to assist. Preferably one the dog doesn't know, or doesn't like. Watch all the video's you can. Own your space with her. Don't worry about protective of space. If someone ever broke in and you were scared..she'd fear them up. Dogs follow our emotions. He the leader, so your dog feels secure. I apologise for no one replying. My guess is that Will has his hands full. He's got alot of irons in the fire 🔥 I imagine. Hope you're doing good. 👍🇨🇦

The problem I have is leaving my dog for a couple of days. I would like to visit theatre shows in London with my mum on occasion. The one time I did - he would not eat - lay at the door waiting for me and got bad diarrhea - he was very ill. He was left in our home with my adult son who also lives with us. I can leave him a few hours if I go out and without issue. I admit he does go almost everywhere with me - holidays include the dog. If I visit family - he goes - xmas dinner - he goes + I work from home. Any advice?

Always prepare for a puppy like you would for a baby. Take time off work for the settle in period (you will be tired). Be consistent with crate training, and put it in a spot that's easy to clean. Dogs will pee and poop in it at first, so stock up on puppy mats and pop the crate onto of them as well as putting them in the crate. Some dogs chew so avoid wool beds, and layer up on the blankets and toys. Be kind and get a cage large enough to move about in, stretch and play. Then maybe dedicate a room or area where the dog is allowed to be when you leave. Personally I would stick to anywhere that's easy to clean without chew temptation, as the dog will have anxiety at first.

My house NEVER has "alone". There is ALWAYS people and other dogs in my home. The closest we have is sleeping humans. Plus I'm training my dog to be a support animal and come with me when I go to work. Is this going to cause separation issues for my puppy? Do I need to kick people out for a few hours so that the puppy can experience alone time?

Your shepherd was probably from a working line, as opposed to a show line. He has a video on here about the differences. I've owned many shepherds and they were either high strung, or super chill. Then I saw Will's video on show line vs working line. It made totally sense in the dogs I had. Let me guess..your dog is the smaller slimmer type shepherd ? If so, then a working line most likely. Imho. 😊🇨🇦

The simple answer is ABSOLUTELY NOT. While I do take mine everywhere possible, I do crate him for an hour or two here and there. He also happily naps in there, and gets to have his Kong with liver, peanut butter, and carrots. There are some breeds that can still be happy with an owner working full time, but not many, and absolutely NOT a GSD, and that goes 1000 X for a working shepherd like mine! People who can't offer the time and attention almost equal to a young child are by definition not in a position to care for an animal with the social and exercise needs of a dog. A cat, or some fish, or other pets I'm not familiar with do exist and they aren't being neglected if alone more than 12 of 24 hours. I'm not saying that in some emergency crating a dog most of one or even two days is abusive, it isn't, but if that is happening more than every few months the owner is failing and harming the dog.
