I grew up with GS. Awesome family dogs. Very loving and protective. I always remember when me and my brothers were small. We'd be playing and wrestling around with friends. The female GS we had at the time was always watching us. If she thought things were getting a bit too rowdy, she'd go over and gently pull our friends off of us by their clothes very gently, just to let them know "that's enough " 😅 She was awesome.

@@those.gamers. We are also getting a new gsd puppy on August 6th 🥳 We lost our previous one in February, Chuck Norris. He was a couple months shy of 15. He was a fantastic boy. Miss him terribly. Everything in this video is excellent advice for gsd’s. Made all these mistakes. They’re incredibly intelligent dogs, need lots of activity, love learning new things and have such amazing personalities. Joan of Bark will be given lots of training, we already have 2 large totes of toys for her, and lots of love. Good luck with yours! Hope you have an amazing, long life together.

I've had a German Shepherd for 7 years, and I really relate to this video. For mine, the best diet for good digestion has been giving both a bit of raw hamburger and salmon-based kibble. She also gets the last couple bites of everything I eat pretty much. I also feed her a lot of carrots so she can eat a lot more without getting fat. Also, one mistake I made is playing frisbee fetch. German Shepherd's, for both bad and good, are reckless when playing fetch. Mine did a crazy jump for a frisbee and fell wrong and broke her elbow. A big regrettable mistake on my part to turn her into a frisbee dog. Also, walking after freezing rain resulted in an ACL tear. She's had surgeries though and gets around pretty good. I made the mistake of trying to be too good of an owner by going out for exercise no matter what. In slippery conditions, stay indoors. While the weather is bad, much better to have a bored an unexercised dog, then one that gets a serious injury.

Four months ago I adopted a gsd from a horrific hording situation. He was housed in the largest crate you can buy with 3 other gsds. When he came to our house, I was the first one he saw and immediately became a " Velcro dog". I have to have a talk with him and give him a job to do before I leave in the morning. It may be, " I have to go to work, so you have to take care of momma and guard the house. I'll be back soon." He takes those instructions very literally. The best dog ever!

I rescued a German Shepard and she took to me very quickly. She was kind with everyone and the most gentle girl in the world! Fantastic with kids and playful and well trained. HOWEVER, she was very aggressive towards other dogs. Luckily she was only 8 months old (still big), but easier to train. The way I trained her to socialise nicely with other dogs at the parks was by putting a mussel on her and then letting her socialise. I had her on the lead at all times of course and would pull her back if the other dog went for her so she’d be fine, but it worked a trick! 6 weeks later and I’ve finally taken the mussel off and she is great with every dog! So playful and gentle with them! I was originally against mussels but after researching them and the best ones for the dog I found the perfect one that was comfortable for her and easy for me. Hopefully others can have other tips and tricks on how they’ve trained theirs to socialise when they are big?

Some more things to consider when getting a GSD is do you want a working line or a show line? Working lines have higher drive (work and prey), higher energy, and need jobs much more than show lines. Show lines are typically more easy going, have moderate drive, and typically mellow out at a younger age than working lines. This obviously will vary based on breeding and temperaments, but this has been my experience over that last ten years of owning both lines of GSD’s. Also if you are wanting to do you own grooming (brushing, bathing, nails, trimming hair when needed) it’s best to introduce and desensitize to it as early as possible. You can have a lot of fear/reactivity issues down the line if you don’t desensitize to it early and quickly
@ianalan4367
@ianalan4367 2 жыл бұрын
The show lines also suffer hip problems more than irking lines, correct?
@x941bri_
@x941bri_ 2 жыл бұрын
@@ianalan4367 eh it’s 50/50. Working lines are usually bred more precise when it comes to OFA’s because they’re typically used in PD, Service dogs, and other high-mobility fields. You can get show lines with hips that are just as good, but because they’re typically more sedentary that working lines they’re prone to more issues with weight which can put stress on the joints and hips. Most of the pics you see of show lines are when they’re in a 3 point stack which makes them look like their back legs are way shorter when it’s really just the way they’re standing. It doesn’t hurt them or make them uncomfortable at all. Both lines are prone to the same aliments due to genetics, which is why making sure you go to a good breeder who does all the testing is so important.

Hello, how do i teach mine?
@E-6969
@E-6969 Жыл бұрын
@@jayving7537 learning comes from observing it being done. I’d recommend if your trying to teach what this person is talking about every time your German shepherd wants to go outside to use the washroom ring the bell yourself once and let them outside. Eventually the German shepherd will attribute it to bell owner rings before they lit me outside, and thanks to there curiosity they’ll eventually try ringing it themselves to see what happens. Then you simply reward this behaviour by using the bell for its purpose, a way for your dog to conveniently signal to you I need to use the washroom. It’s like teaching a learning artificial intelligence how to beat a game faster then every speed runner who’s ever lived, you need to hold its hand and guide it in the right direction and eventually it will do it most of the time. But just like any math addicted person let’s round that most of the time up to all of the time. BTW that was just an educated guess so use my recommendation with caution.

My old man wanted a German shepherd for protection guard dog . I have never owned one. I own a beagle and I knew everything about her. So this new breed has brought on a lot of new education! But I love her so much and she’s highly intelligent. And can play for hours and hours. Lol. So to anyone thinking of getting one… I advise someone to be at home 90% of the time . Simply because they do need so much stimulation! She listens really well and I haven’t been able to pay for training but at this point I feel like a trainer myself 😂. I have bought an obstacle course and even battery operated dog toys to give my arm a rest . We are blessed to have some land. Which keeps her occupied. Get ready to groom! And please clean their ears. I’m obviously here to learn more and more. But I feel like I’m on the right path to success.

We have no clue about their early life or how long they were left alone. Please pray for us!

Lucy clearly has target lock on the ball the entire time. Another great GSD trait.
@RatelHBadger
@RatelHBadger 3 жыл бұрын
Ball lock is great, when you are training because then you don't have to rely on treat training. Kara is cross bred with a Border Collie, and her ball lock is shocking. I took her down to the local dog park earlier in the week, there was literally a scrap between two little Jack Russell things a metre away from her and she was locked on the ball someone else had for their dog. I've stopped taking toys with us to the park so she actually HAS to interact. It's a two edged trait for sure.
@Eniroth
@Eniroth 3 жыл бұрын
@@RatelHBadger hey, border collies are working dogs. they're amazing, and you seem like a good owner. I own a GSD (12 years old now) and a malinois puppy (10 months) too, they're also working breeds, and they're amazing. I'll let you in on something that relieved me immensely. Working dog breeds socialize fine with their handlers, and as long as they work and are introduced to people the right way, they don't NEED to play with other dogs. I love watching my little malinois puppy play with other dogs, she loves it too, but she is perfectly content and happy, not missing things in her life when she's just working / training with me, and hanging out at home with the boundaries we've set. Your dog does NOT need access to other dogs in order to live a happy life, as long as you provide them a job to do, which you really have to do with working breeds anyway.
@RatelHBadger
@RatelHBadger 3 жыл бұрын
@@Eniroth it's not so much the need to socialize that's the issue, it's more the obsession over the toy above all else. No toy at the dog park and she socialises find, you can do agility training skills etc. One time she found a scummy old ball in the mud, and a dog she had just been playing fine with started getting annoyed with her because she kept giving it to me to throw. To the point it was nipping her legs as she was waiting for me to throw, she was so ball focused it could have gotten out of hand.
@Eniroth
@Eniroth 3 жыл бұрын
@@RatelHBadger that's what you want and often get in a working breed, though. through that toy obsession you can build focus, and if you only let the dog have the toy when she works for you, suddenly you're the most important thing in her life. your word is the word of god. ignoring other dogs is a good thing, and if those dogs then get annoyed at that, well that is them not being properly trained, isn't it? like i said, dogs don't NEED access to other dogs in order to live a good, happy, and healthy, life. it's very fun for us to look at, but not always fun for the dogs who are experiencing it.
@RatelHBadger
@RatelHBadger 3 жыл бұрын
@@Eniroth when she's working, sure. Doing the agility training the focus is great. Just the concern around suddenly stopping socialising and the other dog getting quite rough with her to get her to play again. Yes it's the other dog not being trained, but had she had ball lock on someone else with a toy instead of me, the other dog may have bit her and she would do nothing.

I miss all 3 of them just like I miss my dead relatives I was close with. I want another but I'm going to need like another year before I can do that. And yes, they're a handful but the fact that they are SO SMART makes it literally a pleasure to train them, never felt like a chore at all. Now our little puggle Beethoven? He's a totally different story - but he's still a good boi too and LOVES the attention of children especially.

Long time American bulldog fanatic but 7 months ago I took a shot on a working line GSD and she has fully converted me. She's so smart and well behaved, I've never had a dog so attentive to me or a dog that learned a command so fast. I have no issues with exerting strong leadership so results may very but she is just so responsive, I love spending time with this dog! Had a minor issue with her killing one of my chickens when she was young but she intuitively knew I wasn't happy with that (I never punished her for it) and now she can go into the chicken pen and not touch one of em. I say, as long as you're not too lazy and have the will to learn, and you actually want to spend time working with a dog then there is no better dog on the planet!

Great vid! I own a 1and a half year old gsd boy. I've raised and trained him by myself working 12 hour shifts 4 to 3 times a week, since he was 7 weeks. My ex helped me for a short while when he was a puppy. I've trained him so well, we don't even us a lead anymore. But it was A LOT OF WORK, and dedication. But I knew it would pay off and my love for him and dogs in general made it easy and enjoyable.

Prong collars when used properly are a wonderful tool for training. I use them on my girl and she’s a totally different dog in her prong rather than her flat nylon collar. She knows the prong collar means fun times so now she is eager to put hers on when she sees it.

Everything is spot on. We had our girl for almost 13 years. She recently passed. She was prone to having hip problems. She didn’t end up having hip issues. Ended up having fused vertebrae and bad knees. We gave her good supplements, she was on a medicated diet ($$$$), and she was on medications to keep her comfortable. She was amazing. And looked so much like Lucy. She’d have sat so sweetly like Lucy next to me if I were doing a video.

Aww, I am so sorry for your loss. She sounds like she was very special and she was so loved and looked after by you. She had 13 years with you, that in itself is a testiment to how much you loved her. I know how much surgery/medications can be. I am in the process of losing my 8 yr old male GSD, he has Degenerative Myelopathy and I wanted to let you know, I share your pain. Hugs to you. .

@@shavaunaronan3188 I’m so sorry. Our lady had multiple myeloma. We did cancer treatment for a year, something we never would have considered earlier with an animal. We just didn’t have the money. Thankfully the cancer treatment (just pills -no torture) gave us an extra year. It’s gut wrenching to watch someone with such love in her eyes as my girl finally say she’s had enough. I knew the day right away. There was no doubt. I called my husband and told him we needed to call my daughter who would be at the vet because she worked there and she lived with our girl for years. Our neighbors came over and cried and said their goodbyes. All in all, it was pretty much the perfect goodbye. We all know that there are always goodbyes and some are not so full of love and caring and support. A human should be only so lucky to get that kind of treatment. I’m so sorry to hear you’re going through that. But I wouldn’t trade the agony of her death for never having met her and loved her for almost 13 years. It was our agony, not hers really. I’m praying for peace for you in this horrible time. I sincerely hope that your precious boy tells you the exact day when he’s ready to go. That part can be agonizing. Hugs to you.❤️

Nice content as always !Let me share my story !As a first time dog owner (male west german showline) i was pretty forgiving with my puppy for the first 2-3 months ..He ended up thinking he was the alpha...He even growled at me when i asked something of him !He would bite me when he wanted to play (not with force but its still not acceptable behavior)...Had to contact a professional trainer to help me with my puppy!The key is consistency !All family members should behave correctly!German shepherds are amazing dogs but need stimulation for great results! Kisses from me and my 7.5 month puppy roco !

My last dog was a wolf/husky. He was a lot of work but so worth it. It’s been about two years since he passed and I’ve finally decided I can’t live without a dog in my home. Have chosen a German shepherd. He’ll be old enough to pick up in a few weeks. Thanks for your list. Really helpful. I had to use a prong collar with my wolf dog for the safety of him and the neighborhood but he learned very quickly not to pull. Don’t really like em but can be a useful tool. What’s great is I’m a stay at home wife and mother so he’ll get my almost constant attention ❤

Structured Socializing is a must if you have young kids! The way I started off my puppy was but keeping her on a lead and having kids approach her gently with pets and love. If the pup gets overwhelmed, ask the children to take a few steps back but do not remove them or the dog. Socializing with other dogs is also a big must! Socializing at the dog park is not a good method, especially while they’re young. It can create fear reactivity because pack mind sets in and a lot of times people do not have control over their dogs or won’t step in if anything happens. A better way would be to take the pup to a pet store when it has all of its vaccinations and introduce to other dogs on lead and in a controlled environment. That or on-leash parks. Setting boundaries with others and their dogs/children will help prevent a looot of issues down the road. Best of luck to you!

Your videos are really informative and always fun to watch! Lucy is gorgeous and smart! I kind of really need your advice though. My parents just got a GSD puppy last month, he's 4 months old now. The problem I see is that the puppy is not getting enough exercise and attention... They usually leave the puppy outside in the front yard, but he would be just lying down in front of the door looking depressed. Puppy gets like 2 or 3 ten minutes walks everyday, and a small amount of bonding time with my parents (def under an hour a day). I play with him as much as I could when I'm there, but that's just one day per week... Good thing is he's been well fed and loved. I could really use some suggestions, thanks a lot in advance!

I’m a first time dog owner and was adamant on a GS because I’ve loved them for so many years. Your videos have been so helpful. I just got my pup beginning of the month and we’ve had it rough with parvo and other health issues. But, she is an amazingly smart dog already at only 11 weeks. I hope one day she will be as well behaved as Lucy. The teething/biting period has been painful lol. I wanted to ask, how do you feel about e-collars? I’ve been looking around to hire a trainer early on but half of them seem to be using them. I’m not sure how I feel after doing research. Seeing both sides.

E-collars are amazing tools if they are fitted and used properly. I personally use them with all of my GSD’s and have never had an issue, however, all dogs learn differently so keep that in mind when choosing tools. The recommended age for E-collars is 6 months + but I started mine at 8 months because I wanted to lay the foundations of my training first before making minor corrections with the e collar. I would recommend speaking with a trainer and learning how to properly handle a dog with an Ecollar before use! Best of luck to you!

Picking up a German Shepard puppy in two weeks and your videos have helped me along the way to making this decision. The only concern I still have is that the wife and I have rescued two dogs already (a lab retriever mix and a pure blue nose pit) and we want to make sure we stimulate properly. I do plan on bringing her to work with me a few days a week and I manage a lumberyard so I know activity won't be an issue but acclimateing a puppy to the existing dogs is my biggest issue.

I've had GSDs since I was 16. I'm now 100% disabled in my 40s. Got a new GSD puppy about 2 1/2 months ago. Before I had no problems with GSDs and so I thought that of course I would get a GSD. However, being disabled and having a GSD that isn't trained is completely different. This is the 1st time I'm having to send a dog off for training, but being disabled and trying to train a GSD has been extremely difficult for me and I just don't have the capabilities to do it. So, if you're physically disabled, really think about the amount of work that goes into a GSD.

I'mnow into 9years withmy first self-trained gsd...and he's an awesome friend. First 3 years I was able to train everyday, for hours on end. By that I mean he was always with me, on the bus, in the train, onevents, in the city and outdoors..he was always with me. We did go to school from day 1 until his 6th year, after which I moved to a new home and we actually stopped going to school.Nevertheless I repeat his training still on a daily basis. It's fun and totally worth it. He's 9y old now and always walks off leach..but I'm pretty sure I was lucky to be able to put so much time and effort in him the first years. However..I personally wouldn't buy a second one that early, enjoy your first one for around 6 years and then go for a second, maybe even a third. The older one will hrlp you alot in training the younger ones 😉

Loved your video as you hit the things people need to really know about GSD. I grew up with a pack of shepherds and loved them all. My father trained them and they were the best dogs on the street. I remember being about 7 and walking mine around town, she was bigger than me but took care of me and obeyed. My husband was in the K-9 section both in the military as well as police so loved GSD as well. Sadly, we are both retired and while would like a couple, they would be too much for either of us to handle at our age but we both miss them greatly.

Same here. I had a pair of GSD'S. Fabulous dogs. You really get back what you put into them. However, when the second one died aged 13.5yrs, I realised that at 60 and 72yrs, we were too old to start again with you g GSD and give it everything it deserved in terms of exercise and training, so now we have Pomeranian and a Jackchi. Perfect for us, as older people, and hopefully I'll still be walking them for at least another 10yrs.

I just watched your video and I really liked it. I adopted a 4 and a half year old male German Shepherd from my local animal shelter. He is a really good dog. I am training him everyday and I also brush him to help prevent a lot of shedding. He is not a big barker. He only barks when someone comes in my yard. We have had three other german shepherds while I was growing up. I did have a working german shepherd that was aggressive and tried to kill other dogs. But for me and my mom he was a angel. But I couldn't keep him because of that. Your GSD is beautiful one. I like how she sits up in the chair.

I don't need an alarm clock anymore, my female german Shepherd Rosie loves to go for her morning walk at 6.30am. If I try and ignore her, she bangs her tail on the floor, still no response from me, she starts having a vocal grizzle lol but off we go a few minutes later, I get licks on the face and her tail wags happily at a million miles an hour as she does a little dance while I get dressed lol. I find a martingale collar works best. Oh, goodness don't mention birds, Rosie is off after them, lunging at them until they fly away. Rosie is a rescue and has issues with other dogs, walking past people she is fine, but no patting her due to her being abused by her previous owner and very wary of strangers. Most reputable dog rescue shelters will tell you on the dog profile if they are children-friendly and what age groups of children they are suited to. Was the female tree-hugging hippy called Karen?

Thank you for this. I am new to a GSD world. Did a lot of research before I committing to adding a GSD to our family. My wife had one as a child and really wanted to get one as a family so we did. Just about everything you have covered I have faced and am facing. My pup is now 4 months and the training is extensive. The only problem i have had is she is scared to death of walks. Not a leash but going out front of the house, going for a walk in the neighborhood, going to the park. Working on her with this. Everything else is pretty spot on. You have a new subscriber in me.
