I've had German shepherds since I was a young girl they are very protective of children. When we were Young and at the bus stop as little girls there was a boy who was a bully on the bus and used to pick on us. We'd run off the bus and try to get away from him. But my German Shepherd dog lady would come and meet us at the bus stop sometimes. One day she was waiting and when this boy came running after us when we got off the bus she took after him she chased him down the street and came back with a part of his pants in her mouth. He never bothered us again. Also one time we were sledding down a hill and she thought that we were getting too close to a road so she pulled us by our snow suits away from the bottom of the hill and didn't want us to sled there anymore. As a grandmother I have a German Shepherd named Maya. My granddaughter at 6 years old was smarting off to me and wouldn't quit. I told her if she didn't stop I was going to spank her she continued to smart off to me I went over and grabbed her took her over my knee and swatted her a couple of times and my female dog Maya came over and got in between us. She did not want me to spank my granddaughter. These dogs are incredibly smart and very very loving. If you get them as puppies and teach them when your kids are young to let your kids pet them while they're eating and play with them climb on them, they will never bite them. My grandchildren live with me most of the time and whenever they leave to go anywhere my German shepherds I have three of them are very very sad. They won't eat and they stay by the door or looking out the windows until they come back. They could care less about me being here with them. My male dog buddy even cries looking out the window. They are so happy when they come home they jump all around and then they immediately start eating their food. I'll always have German shepherds. They're beautiful smart and very protective.

Enjoyed the video, well done. I had a huge GSD when he came with a boyfriend. I was so worried when his grandkid babies crawled all over that huge boy. They pulled his fur and put their hands in his face but he didn’t move, he sighed and went to sleep..lol. I have never seen such patience. He was my 8 yr old daughters babysitter for 5 years, she wasn’t allowed to go out to play by herself unless she took Max with her. She was his job and he loved it! We broke up and 20 years later I still miss that GSD, so this week I am about to look at some GSD rescue females. It’s been on my bucket list and it’s time to have one. I feel confident I have the training skills from training horses and the Rough and Smooth Collies I’ve brought through various dog training classes. I must admit, I learned far more from watching your videos and those of No Bad Dogs, Tom Davis than in those treat only classes. You guys are awesome trainers. Once I get my GSD trained to the level I want I’m going to volunteer at our local rescue. I’m 68, it’s never too late to experience the joy of playing with, teaching and helping dogs, it helps keep us mentally young and physically fit!

The five German Shepherds with which we’ve been blessed were all great with children and other dogs.

We’ve had several GSD’s . These dogs need to be part of everything you do, and I mean everything. If you are not prepared for this then please get a different breed. A GSD will be glued to you from day one. The puppy and teen phase will test your patience. GSD’s need a lot of exercise and love going on walks. ( every day ). Shelters near us get a lot of GSD’s because people don’t do research and just want one cause they’re beautiful. All that being said, If you love your GSD they are great with people and most dogs. Some small dogs can trigger their prey drive.

100 % spot on. If you had a training venue near me I would join. I got him to silver obedience and started on heelwork to music - but is difficult when the lady who runs it - has a dislike for GSD's.

I have had 6 German Shepherds The first 5 had the traits Will described. My current German Shepherd is the exception. She has a very high prey drive when have not been able to tame.

A ten week old gsd if from a proper breeder isn't biting for the same reason that an older dog would be. They must be taught not to bite, never play with a puppy with your hands that is trying to bite, have a toy handy and stick it in its mouth instead. If you are consistent, you will have a dog that won't bite or nip at people.

Great video! I have a 2 year old and 4 year old. Both girls. We are thinking about getting a German shepherd. This was very helpful! But does have me wondering if I should wait until they are older?

Our GSD is great around our 8 year old and newborn. He was 2 years when the baby came along and needed little to no adjustment. Best breed we have ever owned.

It's very bad news for rats when a GSD is introduced on a farm.

I've got a female gsd who seems to get very scared and urinates when I go outside to her unexpectedly (from the back door). But when she sees it's me she quickly starts wagging her tail and comes up to me. I don't know why she is suddenly behaving like this. I worry she will not be a good guardian. Will she ever be brave enough to be a guardian.

There is nothing more intelligent then a female gsd, don't worry. She will become extremely protective about your family. It takes a lil time.

Take her to the vet for a thorough check up first.

Are children safe with GSD
@juanmacedo8816 Жыл бұрын
Only if the criteria is met. The criteria being: 1)if the German shepherd is cooperative in learning to meet and bond with the children 2) if the children and cooperative in learning to meet and bond with the children 3) if the German shepherd is cooperative in learning how to properly be lead by the younger members of your family and has demonstrated it. Even if this is all met, caution with any pet is necessary. Even a Labrador can be dangerous without caution.

the working line gsd is as close to perfect as a dog can get, i'm am considering getting a mal one day but most likely i'll go with another working gsd. the only issue i have with getting another gsd is he will not be my current male which is my favorite and closest bonded dog i've ever had and i fear i will always be comparing the new dog to him and he will undoubtedly fall short and i don't want to do that. with a mal i will not compare as much and not hold it against him because he is a different dog and mals and gsd's are different. i know it sounds crazy but i've never claimed to be normal lol

My daughter has a mean GS that nips at children but loves only me(grandma) he is confused I think and every time I go into my daughters house he sits at my side and And growls at the children and stays in attention at my side he listens to my son-in-law but he doesn’t listen to me but I think he feels like he owns me and my daughter has four children one only nine months old and I’m worried. He belongs to them!
@Makado14 Жыл бұрын
Sounds like he didn't grow up around children, or maybe the parents aren't supervising the children enough and they are ganging up on the dog and he is overwhelmed. He may be looking to you for help. He doesn't want to hurt the kids but he is definitely trying to show his discomfort.

Too much DRAMA: gesticulation, excessive verbiage! It wasn’t till midway through the video that you finally touched upon the subject. Please!!! This is about the GSD, not about you as the presenter. Your image is unnecessary Watch it over again to see for yourself if this well-intentioned critique applies
