I started with live blades, don't really regret it. I feel like I learned to be careful and respect it a lot faster! Plus I always have a knife on me so it's nice not needing to carry another knife just because my balisong can't cut anything.

The fear is very real! I am still nervous about aerials for this very reason. I can nail them all day on my trainers but it's scary with a live blade. It took me a while to do rollovers with out that fear. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks very much for this. Been carrying a live blade to work the last week or so (stead of the usual trainer). Found that even the trainer version of the 'same' live bladed model has a very different feel after you've carried the trainer long enough. Been just spending time getting used to the difference in swing and general open/close of the live blade. To get used to rollovers, I've had an office chair (or at home, a bedspread) to normalize dropping the live blade without a buncha nicks and dings. Really appreciate this

I started flipping around a decade ago (just got back into it these last couple months thanks to your vids, Will!) and I _wish_ I'd had trainers back then. My first ever decent bali was a live blade and that's what I learned on. Only now am I investing in a proper trainer in a Vulp and I am very much looking forward to being able to practice more complicated tricks without slicing my hands up.

Thank you for the tips and advice, Will. I actually just picked up my first live blade, the Schrade Alkemyst (yeah, you've probably never heard of that one, lol), and I took it out and just practiced doing a standard open and close and I wasn't too scared -- until I got cut on the back of my pointer finger...aaaaannnd then on my pinky a bit. This thing is SCARY SHARP, BUT I did pay attention to which handle is the bite handle (by which way the blade was facing when closed) and took my time and dude, I'm LOVING this thing now! I'm not too much of a "trickster" yet, but this is a great EDC for the price that I got it at. And I did all this before watching this video, so, yeah I learned some good stuff. I'm still not "afraid" of the blade, but I'll probably just learn some more tricks on other stuff and take my time with them on this once I get more proficient. (Also, I took the latch off and AND I got it at a pretty awesome discount; it retails for about $220 but I got it for about $150 -- and it's suppose to "compete" with the Lucha, but not at that price point. But honestly, it's a pretty awesome bali if you can get it discounted! I wonder how much you'd like it...?)

I've started with a live blade, and the first few days got about 7 cuts. 6 were on the top of my index finger. None hurt, all bled a little. Pretty much like paper cuts. None really hurt much at all. Cleaned them with an alcohol pad, then put a dab of Neosporin and a bandaid. Then back to practicing. I've got a couple of trainers waiting for me once I get home, I drive a semi long-haul. Anyway, I wanted them because I want to learn some harder moves and don't want to keep getting my practice interrupted by having to fix cuts. Once I get usec to doing the new tricks I'll try them with the live blades. What you've said totally makes sense, treat them all like live blades, and don't be afraid of getting cut. Most won't be bad.

Hey man I had an idea. What if all the butterfly knife youtube and influencers collaborated and made the absolute best balisong he could and then do a limited run of them imagine how lengendary hat would be. Because all of the great fillers would be able to change anything they didn't like and we could make the perfect knife also every one would want one because it's from their favorite content creator. What do you think
@WillHirschFlips2 жыл бұрын
That would be cool! The only problem is a lot of us who make reviews know a lot about flipping, but little about design and engineering, so we'd need a lot of mentorship and guidance to actually make anything good at the end of the day
@genlj89982 жыл бұрын
That's were a company that dose engerneining comes in. you wouldn't physically be making the knife just we start with a base idea then we try and make it and then we make changes and adjustment from there depending on what each of the content creators like
@genlj89982 жыл бұрын
So imagine your doing a review for a knife that already existed exept if you don't like anything you can change it. Maybe you want to have blue handle or maybe the grip isn't nice. We can even change design completly, so yeah you guys only need give your comment and thought and I think collectively if we can make something that fits all of the said influencer needs I'm pretty sure it would be great pretty great knife also we could do a fund raising, maybe each of the creators make a vidoe about and people can donate to it.
@genlj89982 жыл бұрын
And if they donate 10 dollars or more then they get something special like being the scenes or maybe a special vote on design features. But I don't know this is the only part I about yet, we need to think of a fund raiser like that to cover the start up cost, where is the money going the come from. Maybe we can do it like a raffle and anyone who donates more than 10 dollars stands a chance to a special edition knife with all the content creators name engraved on it or something special like that. I don't know that were we have to make some ideas
@genlj89982 жыл бұрын
It's a weird concept but come on if it worked even remotely I think kit would be awesome. And we make it a knife that has a limited run so it's gets a reputation (if it's jgood which I'm sure it will be) but if we sell all of them, it might be enuf profit to start making a simular version of and make it constantly.

I only take a trainer with me to work and flip on breaks but anytime else I’m always flipping a live blade. Ppl look at me funny in Walmart but that’s about it. I’ve only dropped my live out in public a few times that I remember. the main issue with flipping live blades for me is scissors, like you said about catching a knife in free fall thats all a scissor is but you just catch the safe handle every time. If you whiff a scissor on a live blade you are just catching a blade or the bite handle.

It's all psychological. My Kraken was "super sharp" when I got it, and now it's "dull," but still is just as sharp as when I got it. A really bad slice might revert it back into it's "super sharp" phase, but it passes fairly quick. And funny story, my worst cut happened just like that at 8:20 but vertically, doing an infinity ladder to ice pick aerial. I full cocked high-five SLAMMED my Kraken and totally rocked my shit. A miscalculation. I definitely sliced something important as due to the swelling and excruciating pain in my pointer finger. Overall a bad week, couldn't flip. 0/10 :( Other than that, I've had many cuts, some slices, some bad, some not so bad, and have been poked many times, from practicing power aerials for example, like full on throw it up, put some Hella spin on it and hope it lands right, but sometimes they landed on the tip, and the damage was nothing more than that, a poke. Once you get over the edge, you're golden. Odds are the knife isn't nearly as sharp as it is in your mind.

might be too late but I recommend getting into flipping with live blades just because they teach you to respect the blade more quickly, building better flipping habits and technique sooner and saving you that transitional step and having to relearn on a different live blade once you practice a trick on a trainer. unless you have the same knife as a trainer, in which case it saves you having to buy the same knife twice. some might say they'll never flip a live blade so they only need a trainer, and that's okay, but if you intend to get into live blades in the future, unless you know nothing at all about flipping I'd suggest getting a live blade first or as soon as you can
