William Bennett Flute Masterclass - Bach B minor Suite - Roderick Seed

This video starts behind the scenes at William Bennett International Flute Summer School. It was held at Frensham Heights School in Farnham, Surrey UK. The class given by William Bennett is on the Bach B minor suite (overture). The student is Roderick Seed and the pianist is Clifford Benson. This was filmed back in 2006 by Simon Diggens, who also provides a humorous narration at the start.

It drives me crazy with these masterclass videos when the world renound instrumentalist rather than illustrating their points by playing sublimely does it by singing horribly. The James Galway master classes are even worse: he is a sublime flutist and rotten singer, and he sings the whole time and never plays!

Because it’s about the student’s playing, not the teacher’s! It’s not a teacher’s recital. If you want demonstrations of the teacher’s playing, buy their CDs, pay for their concert tickets, etc. A good teacher makes it about the student’s playing, and makes sure the students learn through playing, rather than eating into their student’s playing time by the teacher playing themselves. When a student isn’t getting it, then the teacher will demonstrate through playing the phrase to them.

Even though it’s not evident here, Wibb often demonstrated in classes and lessons and it sounded magical, but a big part of his teaching and playing is to make the flute sound like a voice and make the phrases sing, and so by singing, one feels how the music should go and where it resonates in the body. If a student simply copies their teacher’s playing, they don’t fully understand the message and ultimately just learn how to imitate. Also, this class comes from a whole summer school where Wibb taught all day, every day for over a week- it’s very demanding to play all day.

I think you're missing the point, James. The teacher is often just demonstrating some aspect of phrasing, or breathing and neither the vocal quality or intonation are important. As Dima says, if you want to listen to the master playing it, buy the CD; If you are a student and want to know how it is done, go to the masterclass and listen carefully to what they say/sing/act. Not all opinions are of equal value.

You learn a huge amount by hearing a great player close up and in the flesh, that you never experience by hearing a recording. I think that is probably the greatest benefit of these kind of situations-to experience the visceral, physical impact of a great player's sound close up.That is what I would wish to experience paying for an expensive course rather than being sung at unpleasantly.
