Blake's Newton = the Idol of Science. (It is not complicated as academics make it, it is Simple). Newton used science to study God; Blake used Newton[ian] to portray idolatry and man's descent into the bottomless pit--technology. Newton's pearls, much to his displeasure and irritation, were thrown (by himself who omitted God from his own work) to the swine--Godless man, secular man. Put another way, 'Welcome my son, welcome to the machine'.

I agree when i looked at his depiction of newton - the focus of newton is on manmade creation and a narrowing perspective, while ignoring the vastness beauty and mystery that truly surrounds him. Humanities narcissistic love of materialism and technological progress at the expense of a more humble spiritual side that understands there are higher powers at play.

@@riffraffrichard So much applies here that so few know today. Blake was certainly a brilliant artist and poet, able to convey deep mystical meaning in his work, and here irony & criticism. 'Truth is ever to be found in simplicity, and not in the multiplicity and confusion of things.' We stopped looking up in the secular age. Even before this did man forget and confuse the divine meanings (ex. Zodiac profaned into daily horoscopes and fools fighting over thrones, instead of the message of the prophets). 'As a blind man has no idea of colors, so have we no idea of the manner by which the all-wise God perceives and understands all things.' --Newton
