A police psychologist explains his professional philosophy by telling the story of how he and his guests were held hostage at his summer home, and how his understanding of the kidnapper's past traumas (as indicated in the title) prevents further tragedy. Middling psychodrama with noir overtones is pretty simplistic and by-the-numbers, but it does reflect America's and the world's fascination with the psychiatric profession at the time, not to mention their confidence that a good shrink could solve anything. (Too bad Senator Joe McCarthy didn't undergo a few sessions on the couch, but I doubt it would've helped!) In addition to being one of those movies told in flashback where incidents that the narrator couldn't possibly know about are included in the narrative, this also suffers from Lee J. Cobb's lead performance; he's generally struck me as a self-indulgent overactor, and this movie doesn't convince me otherwise. But there's also a fascinating, charismatic turn by William Holden as the fugitive: you can't keep your eyes off him. Such triumphs as Sunset Boulevard and Bridge on the River Kwai would follow in the decade to come, but watch this "B" and you'll see a star being born! 6/10.

I like the way that these people are at the lake house for the weekend, and they're dressed like it's a formal affair. Nowadays, the men would be wearing button down short sleeves, cargo shorts, and slip on canvas shoes or sandals. The ladies would be wearing bikinis, and everyone would be smoking weed and drinking brewskies. Maybe some of them would be in the hot tub getting "cozy".

Good movie. We've come a long way in mental health since 1948. However, I don't think, we are much better off than 1948. I believe most of our actions as adults are well-established before puberty. Some experts have said that by 5 years of age, which means those that raise the child. And today, sadly, most of us let the government raise our children. Inscribe above the auditorium stage, of my H/S were these words 'The Foundation Of Every State Lies In The Education Of Its Youth.' Socrates. And we have been doing a rotten job of it. Mainly because of FATHERLESS homes. And even with fathers, it takes two incomes to have a decent life. Parents are just too caught up in everyday life. We've turned to technology and indoctrination. And an EMP Pulse either from the sun or man-made will ruin it for all. (Remember the CCP's Balloon that flew across the country?) Except for those societies untouched by technology, and a very old prophecy will come true "And the meek shall inherit the Earth."
