You are my hero, Mr. Porter. It's pretty funny to see that you're such a young guy. I drank for 40 years, and reading your book along with Annie Grace's enabled me to do what I never, ever had hoped or even dreamed I could do. I stopped fucking drinking. My last drink was one year ago yesterday, and I have zero desire to ever return to that unrewarding cesspool of poison. I don't mean to be maudlin, but I think you basically saved my life, friend, so I thank you from the bottom of my heart!!!!!

I’m on day 30 . Feeling great , just get times where I feel like I’ll break . I’ve worked in the booze business for 25 years . It’s brutally tough . One thing I’ve really noticed is all the alcohol adds . Best of luck everyone

I have read dozens of books about alcohol but William porters book Alcohol Explained is by far the most comprehensive. I have also read why we sleep by Matthew walker which also mentions the devastating effect of alcohol on your sleep quality. Thanks William, I appreciate the effort you put in to writing your book. I have it in Audible, kindle and hard copy!

Thank you for this very interesting and straightforward presentation. The explanation of the two ways alcohol affects you, relaxation and intoxication, and that they are not the same thing, was very enlightening. I will save this one.

It's a shame this video doesn't have 300 million views. I'd guess that circa 90% of drinkers have no intentions whatsoever of quitting, mostly through fear of the unknown. Self education and not being deluded are a necessary precurser to this.

I’m on Chapter 15 of the first book of yours (AE) and already intend to read the second (AE2). I’m loving the reinforcement that alcohol is poison! I’d encourage others who want to quit drinking to read “This Naked Mind” - Annie Grace is truly changing lives!!

I can go for a few weeks without being tempted, but usually at some point Ill get the anxious jittery feeling that comes from too much caffeine or mot enough water say, and Ill reach for the drink again to help that go away, even though every single time i end up getting passed out and blacked out. Once i left the oven on with food in it and it got burned--couldve set the whole house on fire, just because i wanted to relieve the jitters.

This acutually explains legitly what actual alchohol really does, Unlike AA which which is dumb calling other people normal drinkers and others alchoholics.

The difficulty to regulate emotions as well as the lack of ability to transfer short term to long term memory sounds a lot like something a person with borderline personality would experience (while sober). The feeling of an intense emotion being right on the spot but leaving you anxious and scattered later on (sometimes a few seconds only) is a also a regular occurrence for a borderline person (gets tough to deal with on the long term), it's interesting to see being borderline almost emulates being drunk, especially when knowing the high levels of alcohol abuse linked with borderline. Also curious about the effects of alcohol on the body e.g. hormones and organs.

Yes, in the substance recovery field it's generally accepted that people in early recovery often behave in ways characteristic of those diagnosed with BPD and/or other "mental health" disorders.

Can one recover physically after decades of on and off drinking? Is it ever too late if one doesn’t have serious liver damage for example

It seems the bodies organs are capable of substantial and immediate self repair. I share a similar concern to yours after decades but have to expect a mysterious amount of internal damage until a definitive medical review is paid for and concluded. Until then , drink lots of water and stay away from excessive processed sugars , chocolate and junk food as these will destroy your beautiful body just as effectively as the 13th bloody Mary, dahling !×× pip pip and good luck (p.s I'm on week 13 after 40 years)

You oversimplify, example "The worst case your brain will get to normal after 5 days". Too bad, I'm disappointed, just received your book. WRONG. Worst case the brain has Wernicke-Korsakoffs Syndrome and the brain is damaged beyond repair. Wet brain. The type of alcoholism which causes DT's can lead to withdrawals which last from 3 to 7 days. That's just the withdrawal, not brain normalization. Long term alcoholism causes neurotransmitter damage which takes 6 months to a year to normalize. Some experts say it takes longer than that. Please be more specific as to exactly what you are speaking to. It's vitamin B1 deficiency, not B12 that causes wet brain. Keep in mind, you're speaking to desperate people who, as you say in your book, will reject information if they find or feel that it's not correct.

I can see both sides of the above. I'm on week 13 alcohol and week 10 tobacco/cannabis. However after 40 years of nonsense, 3/5 days was just the beginning of emotional adjustment and still feels in mid flux. It's still.an improvement and no one is 100% accurate in their theoreticals ...maybe cool your heels and allow a well meaning discrepancy ? Peace out..
