Obviously, the royals need to stay out of the forest. Also, it needed to stay away from anyone named Tyrell because a Tyrell was associated with William's death and another Tyrell was associated with the Princes in the Tower mystery.

Well, even though I'm a Scot, I now feel a sort of kinship with this dude. I like his style. Gaylording about, pissing off the church, whilst still being loyal to his father and doing the whole warrior thing. I like the cut of his jib! His brother probably did kill him, they went in for that sort of thing!

Thank you for this detailed documentary about William Rufus. After listening about the man and his accomplishments, it seems he had many redeeming traits as a king. I would imagine had he married (as was the custom of the day) & produced an heir, he might have had a longer life. As for Henry, based on what I’ve read about him, it wouldn’t be at all surprising if he was responsible for that “hunting accident.” He was after all a man of his time & status. Well done on this one!

Fascinating and a part of my maternal history, the Drew family which goes all the way back to William the Conqueror and his Doomsday book in 1066! I don't doubt William's homosexuality, though the church certainly would and I believe his younger brother Henry was behind William's death and why he rushed to be king in only three days! Thanks for a great documentary on William Rufus! I love the history of all the different eras of my forebears who left the UK, Scotland and England in 1721 from Ulster, Northern Ireland, landed in Portsmouth, New Hampshire and fought in the Revolutionary War, one wounded at the battle of Bunker Hill!

Well, with Robert being so unpredictable and independent-minded, he wouldn't have lasted long. I say this since a king may HAVE to assert authority in some instances, but for the most part, a wise king would know where his strength and weaknesses lie, and delegate such responsibilities to those who would know what they were doing. As for Henry, it seems as though, in their later years together, he was starting to get along better with William. However, since he, as it is mentioned in the documentary, was an opportunist, a hunting trip would be the best moment to make his move, as slipping an assassin into the hunting party, where William would be practically unprotected, would easily allow the assassination to be disguised as an unfortunately fatal hunting accident.

Matilda of Flanders was 5 feet tall [as established by examination of her remains] Their marriage was NOT particularly consanguineous, in that 3rd cousins share only a set of great-great-great grandparents and the once removed indicates that one of them was the CHILD of a 3rd cousin, so absolutely no reason why their children should not be perfectly healthy. The church's prohibitions were excessive at that time.

This was fascinating. William I might have had the easy job, his son had to keep the empire his father had built, I can’t imagine a more stressful life for the time. It’s crazy that all you ever really hear about him is that he was gay and probably murdered by his brother. It’s never easy to be an alpha male who happens to be gay in a world dominated by straight males, I imagine he felt embattled from all directions for most of his life, and of course only a cheap shot could easily take such a figure.

fyi matilda of flanders wasn’t that small she was probably closer to 5ft so short but not as extremely short as 4ft which would be incredibly rare even for that time. she probably seemed shorter since william was quite tall for his time. i saw someone suggest the 4ft figure comes from a misreading of the metric estimate of her height plus debate about how to calculate height from a femur but i think the most recent estimates are still around 5ft give or take a couple inches

An excellent documentary about this fascinating man. One suspects he was "gay" in the same irrecoverable manner as say Hadrian. Hunting with handsome young men in an extremely macho society must inevitably have included an erotic element; but we will never know. The outdated analysis that his aristocratic aesthetic tastes were indicative of secretive homosexuality tells us more about the times in which these views prevailed than anything else.

Despite their close relations... Ummm... 3rd cousins once removed isn't exactly close. Seriously, that's one set of Great-Great-Grandparents shared. Now if they did this frequently, yes, that's an issue, but it's not that dangerous. Sheesh, they may not even have the same Genes at all because of how far apart they are. If that was dangerous then believe me, people would keep better track of their family trees. Everyone is shocked I spend time with one branch of my second cousins, I don't know any of my third cousins, lol. There are many Gay people who are married with children. There’s less if a stigma for divorced people than there is for single people. A failed relationship is your ticket into social acceptance. Fortune smiles and frowns on all of us in different ways, and it does not follow rules. There are no rules if there were, such a horrible man would not have been a King!
@robertalpy
@robertalpy Жыл бұрын
I don't think it's accurate to call him gay. Homosexuality as a genetic trait is rare. Humans like other mamals can mate with either sex and any preference is not exclusive except by choice. Even when a strong genetic preference is present it's not exclusive. Many gay men even in modern times when it's not imperative, at some point will procreate and straight men will experiment. I think William Rufus avoided marriage because he was not the oldest brother and he had a very ambitious younger brother. To marry would make Robert feel an immediate need to possibly kill William and Henry too. If he was trying to produce an heir his brother's would not have let him live I'm sure. That was the main trouble with having too many sons back then. The more a heir has to gain, the more likely his brothers would murder him.

Fascinating! Had no idea William Rufus was one of England’s gay monarchs. Yes, I do think he was homosexual, and yes I do think he was murdered, probably by Henry. William shows all the telltale signs of an insider/ outsider complex, and he wasn’t mindful of the benefits of getting a beard and producing an heir. Henry hated both his older brothers and was always looking out for number one. Poor William didn’t have an end game so Henry arranged one for him. The burial situation was shameful. Tsk tsk. Everyone wants the rewards of being king but few want the responsibility and risks! Privilege without love is a horrid destiny.

History is written by those who are able to write, &, in the Middle Ages, that usually meant those in the church. Because of William Rufus’s strained relationship with the church, historians have took it at face value that he was a bad king, taking the clerical historians at their word. But let’s look at the facts: King Rufus II had much more success against the Scots & Welsh than most other kings of England, & had many victories against the French. He was a capable leader, & militarily wise. King William Rufus deserves a reassessment based on his accomplishments for the realm of England, not his relationship with the church. When we do look at his accomplishments, we will find that he was, indeed, a rather good king. Also, I love how when the church demanded a hearing be held to look into claims of sodomy going on in his court, King William II asked “😠 what business is that of yours!?” & basically told them to buzz off 😝. Damn right! 🌈😄✊

Plus as all his battles just concerned who was ruling the country I guess the ordinary people couldn't care less, one overlord is much like the other.

I think his outbursts over petty things like cheap shoes was not lack of self control, but playful performance. Part scolding, part entertainment. In a manner some men of his flamboyance may have. If he wasn't like that, and truly taken to rage over minor things, he would have lost the respect of those around him.

I wish I lived in Britain. Even though I don’t like all of their laws I could obey in a country so old that I trust they know what they are doing, unlike the most corrupt country in the world the united states

Which British laws don't you like - not carrying guns, driving on the left, no laws against jaywalking, universal health care?

@@pedanticradiator1491 In Arizona, when a renter has a water heater break down or a the electrical power stops, and the landlord is given written notice, then they must fix it within 2 weeks of being told. No other choice, just fix it. But, I can attest that in the UK, even when you have a hole in the floor, no light switches work and the boiler doesn't heat the water, even when you ask an MP to help, it doesn't make anything get fixed for the renter. I have rented from three different flats, from three different rental companies and none are any better than the other. They simply do NOT take care of their renters and I can prove it with all the documents from trying. This flat is the best so far and its floor has not been fixed for almost three years.

Hapsburgs later on ruled most of Europe but their over-reliance of "keeping it in the family" is what pretty well ended monarchies in Europe all together, cause most of them were so messed up with repeated inbreeding they could no longer effectively run a nation. Often monarchies werent established by any kind advantageous genetic superiority but rather cunning and more importantly unabashed brutality. There is now like 1.7 billion people on the planet, go find some strange.

I have a theory that the reason William Rufus disregarded the church was due to a sexual assault on his person at a young age, it's the only thing that explains his woeful neglect of the institution, what ever happened to him broke his faith and his trust, and most likely scared him for life, and maybe even warped his view of what was considered normal at the time, however I enjoyed the video presentation and find I very much liked the Kings character and out of all the Norman kings, he was my favourite.✨🐱🐈👍

I find it ironic that the Catholic church knew about the dangers of kissing cousins. It obviously fell on death ears a few centuries later with the Hapsburgs.

Well / I’m late coming home into this, but Edward certain strikes me as a little sh&t)! Especially the way he treated Mary, Like he BBC would actually have no problem putting his sister who cared for him to death. Plus - why would he not want his Protestant sister Elizabeth on the throne? Why had he found fault with her too? He had to know she was intelligent in extreme - so much so that I can’t figure that out… Jealousy?? Pressure from that we aren’t aware of in the court?

i agree with some of what is in this vid, other stuff is very iffy at best, but the part of pope urban asking for a crusade to reoccupy jerusalem and extinguish the muslims can only be termed at best an ignorant mistake or a outright lie.
