notes on macbeth act 1 scene 5 Act 1 Scene 5 .Lady Macbeth is very clear on what needs to happen, she openly admits that despite her husband's ambition, he's incapable of acting dishonourably to get what he wants >she fears his "nature" & believes him to have too much "human kindness" .the rest of this scene involves Lady Macbeth invoking evil spirits to help her to achieve her goals, dedicating oneself to evil & calling upon demonic sprits would've been very powerful >Lady Macbeth is crossing over to the dark side & there's evidence to suggest she's become possessed, later in the play she sleep walks & talks to herself .Shakespeare uses a metaphor to extend the idea of things not being as they are .towards the end of the scene she decides Duncan needs to be murdered & gives Macbeth a lesson on hiding his true feelings & thoughts >she tells him he's giving the game away by his face "your face my thane is as a book where men may read strange matters" >she advises him to "look like the innocent flower, but be the serpent under't" - a metaphor of concealment, confusion & hidden identity & also another allusion to the animal imagery that Shakespeare employs earlier in the play .Macbeth replies "We will speak further" Shakespeare's adding extra dimensions & characteristics to Macbeth .His relationship w/ his wife is interesting >all the noblemen & other characters fear & respect him while his wife looks down on him - this has important consequences for his character as we'll see later summary: Lady Macbeth reads a letter from Macbeth and finds out about the witches' prophecy that he will be king. ... Lady Macbeth then learns that King Duncan will come to Macbeth's castle that evening. She decides that it is her chance to act, and tells Macbeth that King Duncan will not see tomorrow

Was Macbeth written for a Jacobean or Elizabethan audience? I've seen both used. Thanks

Jacobean as King James was at reign during the era.
@artsridley
@artsridley 5 жыл бұрын
Actually for the Stuarts. At the end of the play when the Scottish forces form an alliance against Macbeth, this is to please James I as he was also the King of Scotland. Also due to the featuring of the supernatural, that also pleased the King as he was fascinated in witches and despised them to the bottom of his heart. So 'Macbeth' was pretty much written to impress the King.

you said Shakespeare used animal imagery before as well. Could you give me the other time he used it? thank you so much
@mrbruff
@mrbruff 4 жыл бұрын
He uses it allt he way through the play. For example in Act 1 Scene 2 when the bloody sergeant is telling Duncan about Macbeth and Banquo's bravery in battle and he compares them and the opposing forces to eagles and sparrows and lions and hares.

could you say that Lady Macbeth uses flattery to get macbeth to Kill Duncan?
@mrbruff
@mrbruff 4 жыл бұрын
It's more manipulation than flattery but there's certainly an element of flattery when she says that if he commits the murder he would be "so much more the man".

Lady Macbeth's intention is to make their house appear welcoming and inviting, but they intend to kill King Duncan. The quotation highlights the theme of Appearance vs Reality, an an innocent flower is harmless and delicate whereas a serpent is evil . Additionally this quotation is a Biblical reference - "serpent" is mentioned in the Bible as the reptile who tempted Eve, thus foreshadowing that Lady Macbeth, like Eve was the downfall of mankind, Lady Macbeth will be the downfall of Macbeth. Also Shakespeare is warning people that in real life it is dangerous to trust what you see as people try to cover up the reality.

IHeartBeauty The fact that Shakespeare presents lady Macbeth in a soliloquy so early in the play and thus the audience seeing her on her own on stage presents lady Macbeth as a powerful women. Women in the Elizabethan era would rarely be given such time on stage and wouldn't really be alone however, because she is, it shows how she is a strong women who doesn't need a man. Alternatively, it presents he lack of feminine qualities because she is able to be given a whole minute on stage which would mostly only be seen through men actors
