Since you asked: It's an embarrassment. Whatever Thornton has to offer is eclipsed by the thoughtless positioning of his mic. No one in their right mind can expect others to suffer through nearly 40 minutes of listening to Thornton's mic rubbing against his shirt. Unlistenable.

It was my understanding that "Fitz" implies bastardy.

@@HeadlinesWithAVoice that's a bit extreme. The purpose of his presentation is a lecture to a group of students, where a shirt microphone is fairly standard. That they had the decency to also upload it for an internet viewership is a blessing. I think this series of lectures is absolutely fantastic and we're lucky to have access to it.

I don't know why but my favorite part of these videos is the mic placement. Every video I wonder if we are going to listen to his shirt brush the mic every time he moves or not. Guess what! 😁😂

:-D I was visiting Caen a few years ago and the locals kept referring to Guillaume the Bastard. It took me a while to realize that they were talking about William. By the way, if you happen to be in the area, the tombs of William and his wife Matilda are definitely worth a visit.

I am a descendant of Elros Tar-Minyatur. My ancestor Arvedui was wedded to Fíriel, who was descended from Anárion, who bore their son Aranarth, making me the last descendant of Anárion as well. When I was only two years old, my father Arathorn was killed while pursuing orcs. I was afterwards fostered in Rivendell by Elrond. At the request of my mother, my lineage was kept secret, as she feared I would be killed like my father and grandfather if my true identity as the descendant of Elendil and Heir of Isildur became known. I was renamed "Estel" and was not told about my heritage until 2951.

I love lectures like this. I don't have the time, energy, or money to attend classes that are interesting, so catching them on youtube lets me absorb information without all the pressure, or dealing with peers young enough to be my kids.

Not only the end of Saxon England, but the end of everyone having a value, no matter how low born ( Norse laws were similar) A blood guild, if a Saxon lord accidentally wounded a serf who was legally going about his buisness, depending upon how bad how long to heal depended on the value the money he would receive or if dead his wife children would receive. Normans treated people who worked the land who inherited their new Norman ( or the worst the French barons ) no low born had any value except to the barons, who could and did treat the English terrible . Also a well known historian describes it as the end of equality and the beginning of the class system as we know it. The wooden and later stone motte and bailey castle's are completely Norman, The Saxons protected everyone inside their fortified towns 'burghs" . Banks ditches encompassing the towns defenses that could be patrolled giving a view for miles , gatehouses stopped bad guys marching inside, The Normans just insulated themselves, a divide a mistrust between the people and themselves. That separation continued into Tudor era but moats battlements were for show and not defence , although during the Cromwellian decade he destroyed most castles to stop loyalists using them, corfe castle is a great example of English engineering how strong the castle was & the sappers who blew most of it up enough to make it unusable, one huge turret has almost slid down the steep slope intact just detached from its original place. Cromwell not a liked person by most people especially Irish.

At the end with the archbishop. No you really can't just say it was God's punishment. More then likely it had to do with Nicene creed. The church had that little schism in 1054ce. Which never ended. Rollo through carolingians marriage was Arian. Non- Nicene creed christianity. Gregory 1 peace was over. Rome was very much Nicene creed or death. The pope bowed to Byzantine empire because they were one and the same from the beginning. So bad kings were eastern christianity like king John. The council of niacea in 325ce still matters. Needs to be put back in the narrative. Peace and agap'e.

Fitz in Ireland are Normans, Fitzpatrick Fitzgerald etc are Norman Irish. I can see the feeling on the lecturers face like * what am I doing here , talking to people about something and I get dumb questions like that* I know that feeling well , all to well , I want to go up to some people and shake them or bash their heads against a wall asking wtf are you doing here , we've already spoken about hastings & the build up , we've moved on and yet your asking why thd French king allows it ... 😫 Because the French king has nothing to do with Duke of Normandy(& now King William of England too! The Normans weren't French, just like Italian Americans that have lived in the USA for almost 200 years, they refer to Italy as homeland and they continue speaking Italian and carrying on customs and festivals native to Italy, Well the Normans had only invaded France and were given Normandy by the French king to stop them sacking paris & beyond just 170 years before invading England, they spoke French and Norse and hated the French and were constantly fighting French nobles whose lands were contiguous to Norman lands. Thdy continued shaving the hair at back of their heads as the tapestry shows . From then on English kings had claims to French throne why we were constantly fighting against the French , on & off until 15th century after Henry 5th died , just after defeating the French claiming the French throne & marrying the French princess, Nobody expected Henry V to die so young & leave an infant son to inherit the crowns of England and France... Which lead to Rose's wars after thd 100 years war ended.
