I'm also glad to acknowledge him in the fact that he encouraged the production companies to get Native Indians playing movie roles which they were entitled to do and take pride in the people, both adults and children, alike on the reservations.

MAD Magazine had a wonderful satire on Cuckoo's Nest. During this scene Mac asks Chief how he went so long without talking. Chief said, "you know how it is, sometimes you just don't anything to say." Mac: "Yeh, but for 15 years??" My wife still uses that line with me when I get too pensive.

Will Sampson is my kids' great-uncle. Their grandmother is Norma Jean Sampson. He'd passed on by the time I started visiting my late mother in-law at her house on Will Sampson Rd in Okmulgee, OK. His mother, Mabel lived next door. I remember that she had Sonny's pictures all over her walls because she was so proud of him. Thanks for the interesting video. I've heard a lot about him from family over the years.

Make it a priority to watch the movie "Amadeus." It depicts the composer's attempt to finish a beautiful piece of music before he died. Then it shows this musical prodigy's grave and his body being thrown in - no casket available. Plus, it was a pauper's grave! So, so poignant that the greatest composer ever could not afford a proper burial, but was thrown into a huge grave reserved for beggars and criminals!!!

Sonny cared for and supported all his kids--they were always visiting him or living with him--he took them with him everywhere he went. Tim, who was raised by his mother & grandmother still had constant visits with him and moved in with him after high school, and because of Will's help, became an actor as well. Tim reprised Will's iconic roll as chief Bronson, in One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, among many other roles. Will adored every one of his kids and they adored him, and to this day sing his praises! As I said, Jerry had many facts wrong and many incomplete. Those of us who knew Will (Sonny) personally are very saddened by miss-information, especially in a public documentary.

Just want to say I saw this when I was 13. It scared me. My mom was having shock treatments. I didn't know what it intaled. My mom lost much of her memories for years. The Lord changed her heart. She was ok the last 20 years of her life. Thank God!!!!!!

Although I knew Sonny I did not personally know any of his kids, but always heard Sonny boasting about how amazing and talented and wonderful they all were! They were all the lights of his life. His unbelievably charismatic debut in cuckoos nest never leaves us. I have thought of his presence in that film and in Josey wales over and over and over again. It’s amazing that his charisma and talent were able to rival Nicholson and Eastwood. I can’t think of many situations where this has happened. Nicholson and Eastwood are so intimidating to go up against. Samsons face was beautiful and intense. I think about him often due to the power of his presence but knew nothing about him until watching your film. Thank you for all your hard work and for drawing attention to artists.

Jerry, My husband and I first saw this movie when it was originally released in 1975, it was the best! (Sonny) Will played such a memorable role in the movie. The ending scene when Will, as "Chief" Bromden, symbolically sets his friend McMurphy free after his lobotomy by saying, "I wouldn't leave you here like this" and suffocating him with a pillow, then himself escaping the mental institute by ripping the hydrotherapy stand from the floor and throwing it through the window and climbing out to his freedom... ...we lived a thousand lifetimes through that one scene. This is such a fine tribute to a wonderful actor, and Native American of the Creek Nation. So young to die at 53. He was, a true warrior. Thank you for the memory.

Dear Sir, Thumbs up on this wonderful documentary. I knew Will & his son Tim. We were in a film together that you forgot to mention. It was for TV series called, "Born To The Wind". This man Will Sonny Sampson just exuded integrity beyond belief and this came thru in who he was as a human being. A natural for the roles he was given in life and acting. I only knew of the actor thru his movie roles, the camera just loved him as most of the world would too. The only thing that really surprised me was his age upon death(53yr.s) and how long he was a actor(10 yr.s). My thoughts were that he had been around so much longer than ten years in Hollywood. A man to admire for sure. Sweet documentary Jerry.

He may have played many serious, stoic characters in his films, like Ten Bears, but behind the scene he was always making everyone laugh. He was extremely intelligent and could say something so profound, yet funny, you would almost do a double take and ask "what the ----- did he just say", as you were laughing your head off. Sonny sure loved life and loved to laugh😅!!!

Really, really liked watching this guy in the movies and on tv.Didn't know he was an artist. He is missed. Grass Dancers are interesting. Back in the oldies while the tribes were traveling, at the end of the day the leaders sent out the young men to select a campsite and tromp down the grass for the night. Being young, their dancing got competative, whirling and stomping, sometimes copying the prairie hens. Grass dancers wear more traditional dress and decorations, not the neon colors of the Fancy Dancers. They are the best at the Pow Wows.

While working in New Mexico bank vaults, I met a young Indian dancer. He was often allowed time off, away during 'ceremonies'. His job in the vault swapped out full bags for empties and balanced the coin count, labeling the denominations into log as fast as the automated counting machines spewed the coins. When he was a little behind on the routine, he often remarked that the vault had "Too many chiefs and not enough Indians" :)

This man represented his people very well and I remember watching him in most of everything he was in and I for one felt nobody else could have played a warrior better than this man, he will always be in my memory as a perfect example of our great native Americans, I'm not full blooded but I have had some very good full blooded friends, and one thing I can say is they were the best of friends I've ever had and I'm glad because I sure wouldn't want them for an enemy.

He looked very old at the age of 53....I always saw him as much much older plus his hair was all gray...normally ones hair doesn't gray completely at that age, so it just made him look in appearance of 60-70 yr old with white hair.

I remember him in 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' when he spoke the words "Juicy Fruit" after remaining mute for a long time. I didn't know at first but realized he played the part of 'Ten Bears' in the best scene when 'Josey Wales' rode up to talk to him.
