Ehh.... not really, the performance leaves a lot to be desired, probably not rehearsed much (if at all). These particular concerts are known for their more ‘relaxed’ repertoire so Star Wars are appropriate there. Still really nice to see the joy on their faces.

Lucas actually edited the movie with The Planets as a temp score and originally hired Williams just to arrange Holst's music for the final cut. He ended up just writing his own score, but you can definitely hear Holst's lasting influence on William's music.

Amazing! I read some comments and I see that people don´t realize that is a live concert and outdoors, is very difficult because musicians (and engineer) are in trouble because the lack of acoustics...you can never compare to a studio or concert hall Simply amazing
@valentinvejvoda57107 жыл бұрын
Well yes, it's a live concert and you are right that it's not compareable to a studio or concert hall but in my opinion the BPO hasn't done a good job with Star Wars compared with the live concert from the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Have you heard their performance, if not then it would be time for it. I would be interested what you'll say afterward.

@TheStockwell8 жыл бұрын
Good question, but no - it hasn't. The concerts at the Waldebuhne are more like pops concerts. It's not likely you'll hear this music performed during a regular Berlin Philharmonic concert.
@liegon6 жыл бұрын
In my opinion, there is no real distinction between classical orchestral works and orchestral film or even orchestral video game music. The only actual differences are perhaps overall popularity in certain circles and the fact that the music was written as part of a 'synthesis of the arts' or Gesamtkunstwerk. John Williams himself was inspired by a lot of classical composers and he really is a composer in the classical tradition. And what is now considered classical was once contemporary music. A lot of it has been forgotten and is rarely or never performed. I agree that film music is not really part of a 'classical canon', but the music can stand for itself in a lot of respects.
@AFGalopp6 жыл бұрын
Orlando Aponte Well, John Williams is in my point of view more innovative and has a more personal style of writing than other film composers. Maybe his music will become "history" before the others', along with his non-soundtrack music!
@ethansaltmere6 жыл бұрын
You guys have to be kidding me. This is cool film music. Not art music. I like to listen to Star Wars by John Williams because it is cool and awesome. I like to listen to the Beethoven Missa Solemnis because he is reaching the very deepest places in human suffering. Please be aware of the distinction!
@AFGalopp6 жыл бұрын
Call it like you wish, but History is not an opinion: everyone is making History right now and everything is History. Beautiful and horrible. Useful and useless. Fun and art. The biggest and the smallest town on the Earth have both some history, in different quantity and complexity, but they have. Surely Star Wars music won't be as deep and meaningful as Beethoven, but it's the same concept of "Parade" by Satie being less meaningful than Mahler 9 even if they're both part of Music History. Regarding John Williams or Ennio Morricone, I think that if you try to listen some of their non-movie music you might be surprised and you would understand what does it mean to be a composer today. Personally I appreciate them much more than Hans Zimmer for example, who apparently doesn't write anything but his soundtracks. Like Beethoven used the genre of quartet to experiment freely and Piano sonatas to earn money (so it was!!), Williams writes contemporary music to experiment and soundtracks to earn money. Obviously I'm not comparing the quality of their works. I'm just saying that there's a lot of things to discover through History, and even that obviously they can't be all equally interesting, perfect and beautiful, they are part of History, just because they exist.

Strange, I have about ten different Star Wars performances in my collection and the differences are huge, just like the Mahler performances. Even the versions directed by Williams himself are completely different (Original Sountrack from the 70's, Boston Pops in the 80's and Boston Pops in the 90's)

One of the great orchestras to be sure, I love al of their videos. However, film music is a little different to play than classical. For example, the horn section (which is possibly the best in the world) at 1:05 has to double the volume of that line. The LA philharmonic plays john Williams the best. Nonetheless, a great orchestra preforming great music always puts a smile on my face.
