People are critical of his WC performance in 2019 because he missed many catches, but if you watch the "Chasing the Sun" documentary you would see that he actually had nerve damage in his shoulder from one of the first WC games that the Springboks played. The nerve damage resulted in his arm not moving the way he wanted it to.

@@mixer5717 Respectfully disagreeing. He played a massive role last year before the off field issues. He begun to fit into the springboks system properly. He had a massive hand in giving us victory over the All Blacks last year, finished off against Wales in Cardiff, did a job against Scotland and kept us alive against England till the very last minute. We started looking more fluid and cohesive when he came on for the first test against Australia this year. I wouldn't even blame him for the 1st Welsh test in 2022. He played no rugby almost all year, so he didn't have time to improve/regain any form at all because of the injury.

2022 has arguably been his best year in the Bok jersey. The veil has been lifted. He might not be you’re safe as houses FB who will catch all balls but what he does in terms of attack, vision and positioning, it’s like having a coach on the field. On current form I’d keep him in the squad until he retires.

I have seen the Boks coming back from 15 to 20 points behind to win against top opposition, purely through Willie's vision and attacking genius. Don't forget his deceptive acceleration and lightning speed. He is the most dangerous fullback in the world for sure. Only the All-black Damian McKenzie and the Wallabie Kurtley Beale (when at his best) can compare.

Willie had a hand in more Springbok tries than any other player during his time. He is the playmaker in most teams he has played for. It must great for other backline players to play with Willie. His passing and reading what is in front of him is amongst the best I have seen over 5 decades. Nobody refers to Willie's tremendous speed which is surprising. I must say that Phil Bennett of the 1974 British Lions was also one of the best I have seen to read what is in front of him.

The only Fullback in Teir 1 rugby hat can't beat any player 1v1. Willie is such a basic player. He has no brilliant traits. He is not strong, has no speed, is not agile, has an average boot. If you put him in a vacuum then he seems better than he actually is. Compare him to any of the top 8 team's fullbacks and you realize that he is just average. I love that he does the basics right usually but in high pressure situations he seems to buckle more often than not. Example 2019 WC, being stepped by a forward when he was the last defender. Speaking of Defender his defense is piss poor. I'm sure he has a brilliant rugby mind and I've heard players and coaching staff speak to his great organizational skill in the backline and I will give him that. But in terms of technical ability and what he does in high pressure situations he is just average when compared to 15s in other top teams. He has 0 X factor. But i will admit he has been playing better recently and I am happy for that, but to say he is elite is a stretch for me. He is nowhere close to being part of the top 5 fullbacks in the world
