I can barely listen to anything Ray Charles does without tearing up. There's no one who can pack so much into one song, one phrase even, like he did. And anyone who think Willie Nelson is just a hick singer, just doesn't get it.

Both of these immortals have left their signature stamps on "Georgia". Ray's is probably better known, but in my most humble opinion, both versions are essential. Both are incredibly soulful---once either of these singers touched a song, it was NEVER the same. The best evidence of the greatness of both? Both geniuses clearly LOVE the other's interpretation, neither having to compromise their individual style to fit the other's.

I was there on a American week in juli and got 1 of the last tickets :) We walked the red carpet to a AMAZINGLY GOOD vocal concert and great piano play. When i came back home the first thing i did was buying his audio cassette. His songs were magic to my ears, also his movements and little jokes. No 1 could sing 'Georgia On My Mind' like Ray did. Sadly this concert was not recorded for audience.

I was all ready to comment on this... and then wisely read all of the comments, and found that I already HAD. (Too much KZbin?) Let me simply observe, in addition, that what makes these two so great in interpreting a song is that they never lose sight of the primacy of THE SONG. (Hearing Ray do "Ruby," or Willie do "Once In a While," is like hearing these standards for the first time.) For aspiring singers, in any style: GRADSCHOOL.

I remember a joke going around: "in the 50s you had to be a jew to get a woman, in the 60s you had to be black to get a woman, but in the 70s you had to be a woman to get a woman!" These two singing together reminds me of a time when we tried not to judge a person by the color of their skin (or their genitals). What happened?
