Just saw this on Willie's 91st birthday. Merle is my favorite ever. He would borrow minnows when I was 15 on Lake McClure in '74. Had a houseboat across the dock from us. Always replaced them and then some. I didn't even realize then.....how much he would mean to me later. Thanks Willie for doing this for our friend

U don't get Pardoned, by the Governor of California UNLESS you're really a great, and a wonderful person and man, beneath all of the 'veneer' of the things u might have done wrong by the law in your life, Merle Haggart was a wonderful person and a beautiful man in my humble opinion!! Sure, he made some bad mistakes, but, who HASN'T made some terrible mistakes folks!!??? I live in Australia and I used to operate Combine Harvestors or, Headers as we call them in Australia, I used to work long and mentally draining hours on those big machines folks!! In fact I operated 1 one year, in 1986, and I was on it for 72 hours straight, it was from 10am on a Wednesday morning until 11am on the Saturday morning so, 73 hrs really I suppose ude say, 2 other headers on the same Property broke down, and their drivers, just left me out there on my own, and I've NEVER forgiven them for doing it too me either!! But, my boss, said please just keep on going as long as u can Pete, because it was all a premium wheat crop, and heavy rain was forecast for the Saturday, and when I finally stepped off of that header, my legs went from underneath me folks, 2 BIG Truckers grabbed me under my armpits until, I got my bearings back again!! I was physically and moreso MENTALLY exhausted folks!! My boss, who owned the headers, gave me a $500 cash bonus , and so did the owner of the property, about 5 minutes later, the heavens opened up!! AND it rained for a week, but!! I knew I'd took the crop off, and while it was still Premium wheat, and hence it hadn't dropped in grade, on the drive back to home, my boss asked...'HOW DID U JUST KEEP ON GOIN WITHOUT FALLING TO SLEEP PETE!!'😮 I said because I had 2 good old friends in the cabin with me Noel!!🙂 he replied..'YOU'RE DELUSIONAL PETE!! I said no I'm not Noel!! Because I had both Slim Dusty, AND MERLE HAGGARD IN THE CABIN WITH ME!! Being played on the CD player!!🙂which I did too folks, and both of them kept me going, and from going insane!! Because BOTH of them!! Sang about the working class man!! AND the underdog too!! AND I drew more mental strength from both of them, than most people could ever possibly realise!! I guess, if I was perfectly honest with u all, I DID feel a bit sorry for myself during those long hrs!! Mainly because 2 of my supposed 'friends' just left me out there in the Australian bush to finish that Job on my own!! But!! It's not about me, in so much as what I'm trying to tell u all about here, it's just the strength a man can draw, just from, and by, listening to poor Old Slim and Merle!! Mind you, apart from the fact I'm too darn old nowadays, but, I'd NEVER try to attempt doing it ever again!! Mainly because I can STILL clearly remember! A big old box tree about 10 feet in front of me on the last or, Tuesday night!! I can assure u it bloody well woke me up!! I was jjjust able too yank back on the Conrol handle, that propelled the header along, or, the Hydrostatic handle folks!! AND!! As I reversed back, to strip around the tree, Merle was singing ' AND I REMEMBER MUMMA COOKIN ON THE GROUND!!' I remember thinking..'stop whinging, and just keep right on goin Pete!!' I still owe the $1000 bonus money I got, too Good old Merle and Slim!! As I don't think I could have done that Job without them!! I do apologise for the long post My friends, but I just thought I'd tell how much I still sorelymiss, Slim and Merle!! They always gave me a 'U CAN DO IT PETE!!.ATTITUDE'🙂Whatever 'it' may be!! They both made me feel, so very proud to and for having always been, a 'working class man!!' All the best to u and Your loved ones folks, and please take care and stay safe, Kind regards Pete.

I was looking at my facebook page and I saw a Happy Birthday tribute to Merle. A few hours later, I saw a remembering Merle Haggard tribute and I honestly thought they had fucked up! I looked at Yahoo news and...there it was...Merle Haggard had died, on his birthday. I was born in '77. I had never met the man. Never saw him in person. My Mama introduced me to him through his music and I fell in love with lots of songs. It felt like a family member died when I saw that he was gone that day....still does. This is a lovely tribute with if I remember correctly, Ben (?) playing his guitar?

The guitar riff at the end by Ben Haggard, Merle's son... WOW! It gets me in the "feels." I shut my eyes and just see Merle effortlessly playing that jazzy riff on his Tuff-Dog Telecaster. Instead, it's Merle channeling through his son, and it couldn't be more beautiful. It's a signature style all to Merle, and thankfully his DNA is living large in Ben as well.

I had a front row stare down with Merle 5 or 6 years ago. It was pretty cool. He was directly in front of me on the stage and I was just watching what he was doing instead of moving around and grinning like all the other idiots. Merle noticed me while Kristofferson was playing, Merle was sitting on a chair, pulled his dark glasses down and stared straight at me. I didn't blink, grin, or anything else, just stared right back at him. In retrospect, maybe he thought I was a crazy person, who knows. But it was a full on stare down with Merle Haggard.

This is only my opinion but if this was the only song in the world that would be OK with me it is the best written & the most beautifly sang song I have ever heard I can hear it in Willie's voice he really loved Merle & means every word he is singing.P.S. I love u Willie & merle

This is the song he wrote at the breakup of his marriage to BONNIE OWENS.Even in this great song I think the love respect and compassion for Bonnie he had comes through. RIP MERLE AND BONNIE❤❤❤❤❤
