@Willjum As a solo with no friends willing to play, it's moments like 8:41 that end up causing me to logout for a breather, then I login to a server that I am now playing catch up in which is difficult solo. I salute you, and anyone else able to persevere, but as a solo in my shoes, with only a few hundred hours logged, it can really be tough to push on. Personally, this is probably the coolest game I have ever seen, and I love it. Although I have spent WAY more time watching YT videos than I have ever spent playing, I still really enjoy this game for the amazing possibilities. This game is special. Something I've noticed about Rust in my recent return to the game - even big aggro clans don't seem to mess with the farm shops so often. They might come demanding tribute on occasion, but as long as you don't present a front like you're any kind of competition to them, they'll let you live.

I realized right away when you were like, "why is there all these people by my base?!" They knew instantly when you killed their guy who it was and went to see if you were home. Then probably said a few words, messed with your base a bit and left. The fact you had no idea they were coming back with boom was on you I guess at that point. It would pay to have a second base to hold your actual loot when running this kind of operation especially if you're broadcasting to the server.

You could have a "shop base" advertised separate from your main base, maybe. Upkeep wouldn't be an issue if you are farming as much metal as you were doing here and you'd be free to advertise it while only risking the shop base. They'd have to guess which one of the nearby bases is actually yours and you'd otherwise be free to advertise it as much as you want.

I did this on a 100 pop server and the results were crazy. I wanted to create a foundry where everyone can smelt for a tiny cut. I took 10% of etal and 5% from sulfur....It was too powerful. The next morning(~10 hours later) I woke up to an intact base but no vending machine...yes someone raided the machine just so no one else can use it. They did not raid the walls behind it to loot it, they jsut destroyed it. I calculated that from profits it generated it smelted 40K sulphur and I think some group didn't like that.
