Some more advice from a successful solo who's also terrible at gun play: 1) Keep a paper and pen handy, or a text document. I write down every square that a heli goes down in, squares of big bases or bases whos players are giving you a hard time. This is helpful for when you feel like simply roaming for pvp or decayed bases, as you'll know where some stuff is. I used to write down squares I was downed in, but with the new map death icon, saves some space. Also good if you plan on staying on a server for a while to keep a list of trustworthy and not players. I know people often change their steam names, but this has paid dividends when looking for certain items to trade for. 2) Practice gunplay on aiming servers. It really does help, even if you're bad at it, to have some understanding of each gun's recoil, and it'll help you find one you prefer. 3) Doorcamping works. People will talk shit, but all is fair in love, war, and Rust. If you've been doorcamped before, gotta adjust your base build to take that option away. 4) Get good at farming good. @Willjum mentioned the snow biome as the best for nodes. This is true, but on every map, in every biome, there spots where nodes are far more likely to spawn. I'd write those down for the wipe. As for scrap, nothing beats the ocean still. I like the kayak, and if anything this has made the ocean waaaaay less populated early on in wipe, with the only other boats I've seen being a duo going to rig, and a group that took the rhib off cargo. Don't forget the Outpost's resource exchange vendor. 4500 stone=15000 wood. Don't forget to tap your jackhammer to save durability. 5) Plant farming is still very profitable. You can still do the Cloth to scrap vendor. It's been nerfed, but as a solo you often have more cloth than to know what to do with. Tea is so incredibly useful that I'm shocked more solos don't invest a bit of base space for it. Not only are the buffs great at saving you time, you can sell the tea for a decent prices, be it sulfur or scrap. 6) If you do have big clan neighbors, talking can really help. On the car update, I made a small garage, and a 6 person clan happened to move in within sniper range. I got killed twice coming over, but eventually I got a word in to say, hey I'm your little solo neighbor, just farming some BPs, I don't keep more than TC and I'm not planning on getting above tier 2, so could y'all play nice for me maybe? Not only did this work, I joined them for the next wipe, was good fun. Dialogue and politeness can get you far more in this game than steady aim sometimes. Solo is all about balancing risk vs reward. I mean the whole game is, but as a solo, your risk is typically everything you're carrying, and maybe even your vehicle or horse. So the name of the game is to limit that risk while maximizing that reward. @Willjum really nailed it with the "return every 10-15 minutes to drop" rule. The logic is, if you make 6 trips with smaller amounts of items, and you die once, you've lost 1/6 of what you were doing. If you do 3 trips full inventory, and die once, you've lost 1/3, and you're pissed because it was full inventory. Never assume you'll just win it back, because it's just you. Play smart and you'll at least carve yourself out a spot. LOVE the content Willjum, keep it coming!

One tip that I use. When farming wood, don't cut the tree all the way down. Get 4 or 5 trees on the verge of falling. Basically one or two hits away. Then when you are ready take them all down and dip. When a tree falls it makes a lot of noise, so this eliminates the odds of someone hearing and countering you.

Great video and great advice! I play solo as well. One thing ive been doing lately that i think helps is similar to your idea of farming after losing a fight. If i take a a big L sometimes ill just spawn in naked randomly and just roam around a bit. Helps you see more of the map and you may even find a decayed base or a good raid target. Toxic feedback loop is the worst part of Rust. I wish people would remember "Is only game, why you have to be mad?" when they either win or lose fights. Poor losing is understandable, but sore winners are the absolute worst. Example: Wipe day, I attempted a play on a dude farming, he had a metal pick and I hadn't bped it yet, plus maybe some farm. Didn't see he already had a revolver, hit my crossie shot but he won. I say, from the ground, "gg, heard the pick and tried the play but you got me, nice shooting." He comes up and tells me my mother is a whore, I deserved to fucking die, and he hated me, and wished I died behind my computer as well. Now, I'm 32, so that shit doesn't usually phase me, but I respawn and just kinda sat in my base for a minute to reflect on that poor guy's attitude. Like, dude won, got a compliment from the guy he beat, and that was his response? Now I'm sure I'll get "get gud" and "welcome to rust" replies, but was any of that necessary? But, in this game, you gotta pick that bag, spawn back in, and get back to it. Welcome to Rust.

@DinkleDigeroo I fundamentally disagree. People get toxic for entirely circumstantial reasons that they personally could have chosen to act differently/evolve with the meta. As for losing boats, the whole point is to build a kayak. You can do rig easily with a kayak. Yes cargo costs 200 for a motorboat now, but considering what you can get in drops, not bad. Also it has a rhib on the back that you then keep or use to get your boat back. It's always been harder as a solo. As for scrap, grow some cloth, they literally added farm stuff, just sell it. Tea sells like crazy. Cloth, while nerfed, sells good too. Gotta evolve with the meta. I know it sucks sometimes, but that's life with a game that changes. Try being a longtime Magic the Gathering player when they added the planeswalker cardtype. You roll with the punches or you get knocked down.

One thing that’s helped me a lot for being a solo if I start out on a new server with no bp’s I’ll try to build next to a harbor. Low grade/crude is insane for getting down plenty of furnaces to upgrade, and it’s a tier 1 monument so no one really goes there much. Can get some pretty decent scrap as well to make your way down the tier lists

Now I’ll start dropping loot off rather than running around with it and build farther from spawn points in the beginning & I’m gonna try to keep a positive mindset all the time but it is hard on such a toxic game 😂

I have been a solo player for a couple hundred hours now, and I find immense joy in this playstyle. The biggest part of it is just as you say: one must be able to let go of your loot and accept loss. Getting sniped at random is Rust. Getting jumped by two dudes while smacking barrels is Rust. Winning a battle only to get murked by a bear while healing is Rust. This game is losing often, but when you prevail it is truly wondrous.

Perhaps it's because I always plan on solo or duo servers, but I've found that the best place to build is a short jaunt from Outpost. With a max group size of two, no one wants to risk raiding a base near outpost since it's basically guaranteed to get third, fourth, and fifth partied. Outpost will grant you a safe recycler and an endless supply of chainsaws and jackhammer for early wipe building. After I get my base prepared for a minicopter, I head out across the map towards bandit camp hitting every crate/barrel I can safely get to along the way. Once at camp, I safely recycle and sell mats for scrap to buy an LR and a minicopter. I then fly back to my base and go from there. When in doubt, farm to bandit and buy an lr and a mini :)

If you are a NEW player building your first base the woods are great because there's lots of resources around. You just have to look out for anyone with guns and try to avoid building too close to other bases.

I would agree, console rusts smaller map size makes it hard to keep your base unknown so any concealment helps, plus door campers are pretty easy to deal with from my experience.

There's one big factor you haven't included in your video: diversification. Building multiple small bases so you don't have to worry about upkeep is critical for successful solo plays. Door camped in one base? Spawn somewhere else. Got raided overnight? No big deal, I've got five more.

No matter where I put my base, what time I join the wipe, how much progress I’ve made in the wipe I still get raided by a 4-8 man clan sometimes I play as a duo with my mate but when he’s not on I play solo (on console rust) but it’s stopped annoying me now because countless times I’ve came home from school to see that we’ve been raided it actually makes me happy knowing that we’ve been raided because they spent more sulphur raiding into our base (through the doors, honeycomb and wall or roof) that what they will get from our base because at most we or I would gather up to like 1-2 k sulphur with low tier weapons, gear and not a lot of resources, I have had a lot of good wipes with just myself of my mate we have rocket raided before we’ve had tier 3 weapons and gear, a really strong base it just takes that one wipe where you excel further than you would Edit: so basically what I’m trying to say is don’t get mad at getting raided or killed all the time just wait until your moment to be the one with high tier stuff doing the killing and raiding because with enough time it’ll come.

It's included in the script Raid gives to everyone they sponsor. It's about nothing but the money lol, Raid is a disguised slot machine that persuades children into constant micro-transactions. Nobody promoting it actually likes it. Raid dumps half it's profits back into marketing, paying a shit ton of money to their sponsors. They say they like it because that's the only way they'll get the massive amounts of money they're offered. I'm not saying this guy's worse for doing it for that reason, because Raid's the real problem. I'm just saying be careful not to fall for their extremely shady marketing and business practices. Not everything Is what it seems to be. :)

I’m not that good at the game, but do have some experience now (1k hours). Firstly, like Willjum said the start is most important. Find a location and run there. Only pick up hemp, I personally don’t even loot crates. I do loot toolboxes though since they carry tools and sometimes bows/crossbows. As soon as you have 30 cloth craft a bag and place it when someone is trying to kill you. Accept the fact that you will most likely die trying to get to your designated base location. That’s why it’s important to not waste time farming or looting crates. You will lose the stuff anyway, less things you can give to others the better. Once you have a bag or two down in your planned base location, do a quick 3min look around and make sure there’s not too many active bases which is going to screw you when you’re trying to get started. 2) Building your base. Have a base design learned by heart and that you’ve practiced. Use bunker bases, they’re very powerful. It’s best to build a base slowly so you never have many resources on you. I personally like putting down a stone foundation with two twig/stone walls (whatever you can afford) and placing a tc with lock down. This allows you to depo your resources so you don’t lose much. Plus, it’s not like people can break your tc early wipe unless it’s on a wooden foundation. 3) Once you have your base secure with an airlock you do what Willjum says, get 50 low grade asap. You need that metal for a sheet metal door. Once you have metal cooking and some backup resources, then you can start going on scrap runs for components and scrap. 4) USE your components and materials. Don’t just leave 6k stone in your little 2x1. Use it. You shouldn’t have more than 24hrs of upkeep when you log off unless you know you won’t be playing the next day. Night time is a great time to craft kits and things you need and also take a 10min break to refresh your mind while it’s night and you’re crafting. Always, craft things when you’re afk, use your components. Example, It’s better to have a box of syringes than 1k low grade, 5k metal, 2k cloth. As soon as you can craft something that you know you’re going to use, put it on your nightly craft que. This saves so much time later on and can be the difference between winning a fight and losing it. 5) Go back to where you died asap. The moment you die, spawn in your base and pick up your already crafted kit which you WILL have due to your nightly crafting and book it to where you died. A lot of people are greedy so they take too long to leave the area after killing someone. A lot of people don’t keep enough bandages/syringes as well so they will be low. Makes them easy pickings which means even if you lost the first battle, you win the war. 6) Get your base completed asap. The most important item early game imo is a jackhammer. If you have 150 scrap, buy it. You will finish your farming to complete your base in 1/10 of the time. The more time you save, the further ahead you will be ahead of others. I personally blitz to finish my base, at least in stone since well metal takes a while. I usually get a tier 1 down, get scrap for a jackhammer or at the very least go on a road run for toolboxes/kill scientists to find metal tools before I start farming. I view this as really important. If you can complete your base on the first day it means 2 things: First, you’re probably going to be poor since you didn’t spend much time farming components which is actually a low key good thing. Your base is hard to raid. Most likely you will not get raided on your first day since your base will be complete (in stone at least). IF you do get raided, you lose almost nothing and you put the people that raided you behind since they wasted valuable early game resources and time getting nothing of value from it. It’s actually satisfying logging back in on your second day, finding your completed honeycombed base raided knowing it will take you 30min getting control of it again and farming up the materials/scrap you lost, while it cost the people that raided you 10k sulfur for an empty base. The most expensive thing you own is your base and unless it gets hard grieved with a metal door, you will be able to regain it, even if it means breaking a wooden door and a tc. If you can’t regain your base, no biggie, if your honeycombed base was able to get raided, your little 2x1 was sure to get raided anyway so just take the loss and know you actually put the raiders behind and most likely made them rage for raiding an empty base. 7) Now that you have your base completed you can solely focus on scrap runs and getting guns. A completed base makes things go way faster. No wasting time having to craft extra boxes, trying to find room for boxes/furnaces/etc.,. You can quickly drop things off and go back out. I find this makes you progress much faster not having to waste valuable time. If you get lucky, you might even be able to have a tier 3 by the end of the day since you’re constantly going to be roaming/doing card runs. 8) Getting a gun. If you want to get a gun, make sure you have extra kits because you WIILL die and lose kits a few times. For pvp, go to where you hear gun sounds and stalk the players. Be patient and set up a choke point and wait for them to come to you. A db is best, if you don’t have one a crossbow with a nailgun and compound bow is best. One full charge headshot with a compound bow is enough to 100-0 most players. It’s very powerful. If you can’t pvp for shit, place lots of bags down and look for clan raids. So much is happening during large clan raids that you can usually run up as a naked with a torch/rock and find a kit and gtfo before anyone notices. You can do the same for big clan battles as well. If you’re new, I actually recommend you don’t play much of the normal game. 30% of your time should be spent on build servers learning how to build and different base designs, 50% of the time should be spent on bow battleground servers to get comfortable with primitive weapons since most likely as a new solo player you won’t get a gun in your first few wipes. The rest of your time should be spent learning the basics of the game on actual servers. Build near different monuments and search up monument videos so you learn where all the crates are. You’re going to get better at the game though if you solely focus on getting good at the bow/crossbow (most important skill to have), building, and learning monuments. Jumping into servers and doing nothing but playing actual rust is going to slow down your overall skill progression.

I don't personally do everything the same but there's some good tips here. I do similar things. I get a 1x1 down and sealed asap so my base doesn't get fucked over early game as twig. I set myself goals of small amounts of scrap to build up to a tier 1 , research table and tier 2. I make sure to try and manage my resources so if I die , I have items/resources to fall back on. I have a custom designed base- this design intentionally confuses raiders into thinking I'm a dumb dumb and they leave mr alone. It also has the added bonus of confusing raiders so they often miss my tc and when I reblog I can at least rebuild (if I get attacked). I have also utilise player shops for tier 2 weapons. I use off peak server times to achieve goals that are difficult to achieve when there's max pop. Farming scrap on the ocean with boats and diving have been effective for me , but with the changes coming to boats it may not be viable anymore.

Good video, but I personally disagree with the notion of snow being better for the solo than the forest. Big groups love the snow for the exact same reasons you described, and if you're just out there in the open in their neighborhood, then in my experience, they are going to evict you. For me, building a low-key, but strong base (2x1 honeycombed [top & sides] with the main square being an armored suicide bunker) that is well hidden in the forest, but still close enough to monuments and roads without being in view of them, is the way to go. You’ll have great cover, and you won’t have to worry about door campers, you’ll still be close enough to roads/monuments/action. The key, for me at least as a more defensive player, is to just keep out of sight, and never let anyone see you enter or exit that base. Don't build it in an open field.... hide it in some thick trees. And don’t make your base look big or expensive and like a tasty snack for the raiders. But still make it strong enough (ala armored suicide bunker, armored door on the interior of the airlock, garage doors, etc) so that if someone does blow off a stone wall or your front metal door, there’s a decent chance they’ll move along when they see the armor. And if you hear someone running around outside, stand still and don't make a sound and let them know you are inside. People door camp because they hear you stomping around and working in there. When you hear distant pitter-patter, stand still and don’t do anything and just wait and listen until the coast is clear. And if you're still unsure, then just run out there as a naked or kill yourself and spawn to a nearby sleeping bag to check it out. Once you have that and are well situated, I like to build two more bases. One of them is an exact clone of the base I described above, but in a slightly different area (far enough away from the first one that you’re spreading out from the same raiders/giving yourself access to different monuments/etc; but close enough that’s it’s an easy and safe sprint to your other base. Spread your loot out between these bases. If you wake up and find out your OG base got raided, there’s a good chance your backup one is still there with everything you need. Starting over sucks, especially as a solo, so make a backup. Then once you are doing well, have lots of guns, etc; if you want to really have fun, you can go build a cheap “shell” base out in the open somewhere with a shooting floor/compound so you can have some good PVP action, but you don’t actually keep any of your important loot in there other than as temporary storage to depot it at one of your other low-key bases (if you shoot enough guys off the top of your base, you're just asking to be raided). Again, the key here is to never let _anyone_ know where your “real” bases are. Depending on how far along you get, some bare-basic 2x1s spread around with a gun and some basic loot in each are great for flanking bases / if your other bases get raided you’ll still at least have _something_ as opposed to starting from complete scratch. Some people can just make a bow and kill a guy with full armor, AK, explosives, and farm on their body in 5 minutes and then have a compound up and running in an hour or two. And then can play for 20 hours of the day and always be there to defend their base. But that sure as hell ain't me. This strategy has worked well for me on all kinds of servers (vanilla, 2x, 2x bi-weekly, 2x monthly…), although I do play mostly on 2x bi-weekly.
