I'm so happy that channels like these have appeared, focused on restoration. This is preservation of the old, and it's very important. In several cases in my path from hobby to a marginal side job in machining and similar, many times i have drawn inspiration or have been helped by old books, old items, and old in general. There's a lot of things we've "forgotten" or laid to the side, and in some cases, for no good reason. So kudos to you, the Hand Tool Rescue channel, and any other channels that follow the vein. With KZbin's issues, this kind of video content might, hopefully, attract good numbers.

My Dad worked at Deming's for 38 years. They shut down the Salem plant in the early 2000's. Damn shame. By the time he retired they one of the foremost pump manufacturers in the world. Great to see this piece of history restored. Thank you, Will.

Fantastic! I grew up in Salem, Ohio acrss the street from the Deming family. The historical society has a display of Deming's pumps. I do not recall the small pump like because they were known for the large gov. Contract pumps.You have restored it to museum quality. This Christmas when I am back in Salem I will need to visit that display again

9:13 Tbh I love that atmosphere: You look out of a rectangular - horizontal window, you see a small hill all covered in grass, further away on the hill there is a highway leading to some european sea city which is on the right, you can barely hear the still, plain sound of the highway, it's sunny, quiet, the sky is clear, nobody wants you to do anything, you have a lot of time, occasionally a cat walks in, there are no annoying sounds of family or neighbors, just you, the garage and a squeaking noise in the ears you got from working with a loud machine... This whole video is well made, without unnecessary music or voice commentary, just original audio. That's what I like Also, ignore what I said earlier, I'm just saving this when I come back later

Watching you put your hands in solvent reminds me of when I used to clean parts in leaded gasoline with my hands back in the 50's. In the 60's, I worked with a really nice guy who loved to clean parts in methyl alcohol because it was such a fantastic cleaner. He turned a dark gray color and died. He had survived WW2 only to die from cleaning parts.

Nice work mate. I restore a lot of brass lamps and I’ll give you a tip. Paint any brass you want to restore with tomato ketchup ( not tomato sauce) , let it sit for 20-30 minutes and you will be amazed at result. Then just rinse off with water. Finish of with brasso. Cheers

Great video! To cut hose off hose fittings I fasten the hose just under half way in a vise, cut the top of the hose lengthwise then refasten the vice all the way so that the fitting will pop out of the vice by breaking through the weakened cut area. For high pressure fittings I'll use a hacksaw to make a diagonal cut toward the nut through the collar but the extraction is the same.

Thought it was a bilge pump for a boat at first. They REALLY don't make things like they used to. Restored, it will last another hundred years now! But why not reuse the original hose clamps for historical accuracy?
@WillMatthews7 жыл бұрын
+Thomas Levy I did try to, but they really were average and didn't clamp well so decided some stainless steel new ones would last and clamp better. Thanks for watching!

17:20 Do you think it originally had a threaded fitting (like the one on the other end) that attached the hose to the tap? I wonder if it did and attaching the hose straight on to the thread was a previous makeshift repair when the original part broke. Just my 2c. Not ideal that you had to use modern hose-clamps too, but I guess the original ones just weren't doing the job? Great vid, love your work.

I love watching you tear down and rebuild this stuff!!! Don’t know why! Gotta quick question: do you clearcoat the handle and the transfer bulb that is mostly brass, or can you even do that because it is brass? Just a thought. Good work as always!!!!
@1920sman6 жыл бұрын
Great idea. But did you soak or clean it first? They used both arsenic and nicotine based sprays a lot before WW2 and I wouldn't want to be handling (with bare hands) a sprayer that most likely had these toxic chemicals in it until I'd made sure it was well cleaned. I'd also seriously consider changing the leather / rubber washer that creates the seal as this may have residue in it. I believe gardeners who sprayed in greenhouses had a life expectancy of 35 years in Victorian times because of this. Also, a little trick when detaching and attaching hoses is to have a pot of boiling water, soak the hose ends (5"- 6" of hose) for 5 - 10 minutes to soften them before you detach / attach and it is much easier. And when attaching, fit the jubilee clips while the hose is still soft (but not too tightly). As it cools and hardens it will create a better seal. Also did you replace the hemp sealant (with new) you removed at the start (about 2:44)? I restored a 1940s era pump spray (bicycle pump design) about 25 years ago - still going perfectly. I have recently been given a similar sprayer to yours and must get on to restoring it. Thanks for the great video.

"I wish I was born in the time when tools were well made" - I totally agree. I inherited most of my grandfathers tools. He took real good care of them. He owned very few power tools. And if he did not have a certain tool he would make his own out of other parts. His tools will probably outlast all of the tools i have.
