What's funny, is that the bird that the High Aldwin made from the rock to "guide" them...did exactly what it was supposed to. Guide them to where Elora belongs. Which, in her helpless state, is wherever she would be safest and most loved...which would've been right there in the village with Willow's family. They killed the dogs, so nobody knows she's there, and nobody ever came looking. It's pretty clear that, for whatever magic exists in the world, there's little to no "tracking" or "finding" magic. Otherwise Bavmorda wouldn't have needed the dogs or anyone to look for the baby. Nor would she have had to seize all the pregnant women, she could've just used magic to find the mother. Had Willow just stayed, Bavmorda would've plain been screwed. Her only real option then would've been scorched earth of all the lands, and that would not have worked in her favor. It would've spread her military power far too thin, leaving her vulnerable to counterattack from enemies that otherwise she could defeat one nation against the other. Any one of them she could destroy without difficulty, but a multi-front war against all of them, would've had her defeated. Her real advantage was in keeping the other kingdoms from uniting. But if she goes scorched earth in order to ensure finding Elora (because she can't just kill her...the ritual is necessary to prevent Elora's inevitable reincarnation), she forces everyone into uniting against her indirectly. And that war, she can't win. So...yeah, had they actually followed the bird as intended, instead of obeying the High Aldwin's hurt pride...the good guys would've won by default.
@MagicalMaster
@MagicalMaster 8 ай бұрын
Maybe, but the dogs already got there. They took a while but they were fairly accurate. And who's to say that the next time the dogs wouldn't have been followed? Granted we did only see one bunch of the vicious beasts so that might have been all of them.

@DoremiFasolatido1979
@DoremiFasolatido1979 Жыл бұрын
Yeah...I don't get the grimdark thing at all. But the show is absolutely lacking in the charm that the movie has. Also...I don't know how, but Warwick's acting has gone completely in the toilet. He sounds like he's just mechanically reading from a script, and not trying to be a character at all. I haven't made it through the second episode. Tried multiple times. Tried watching some reactions to eps 3 and 4 to see if maybe they improve. Nope.

The balance of terror & humor in this movie is still _SO_ spectacular. Seeing you guys cracking up to so many of the iconic lines and classic moments was such a delight. Also, I can't believe we got another perfect Aaron moment at 33:25 with the Eborsisk's head exploding. Queen Bavmorda remains one of the scariest sorceresses in any movie for me. After the pig scene, there's something about seeing her catch the acorn and stop it from turning her to stone that I always found deeply frightening as a display of her power right at a moment you expect her to be undone. Even while some of the visual shots are dated, the scenes where they still look amazing really speaks to the technique and technological innovation that went into it from ILM. I really hope that the series manages to capture some of this magic again.

My first introduction/familiarity with _Willow_ was though the THX/Lucasfilm reel that used to be played at your local Fry's and Best Buy and from the ILM documentary where they went into detail on the Raziel Metamorphosis scene but for a while I didn't get a chance to watch the film until it came out Disney+ and for a fantasy film from Lucasfilm that are synonymous with the Star Wars and Indiana Jones franchises respectively, especially the former this was a very enjoyable fantasy film. From the music by the late James Horner, to the acting from Warwick Davis, Val Kilmer, Joanne Whalley, Kevin Pollack, Pat Roach, Patricia Hayes, Jean Marsh, to Ron Howard's directing and the visual effects of Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), the film when it came out in 1988 was ahead of its time along with the fact that this film besides being filmed in Wales was also filmed in New Zealand, so this film predates Peter Jackson's _The Lord of the Rings_ trilogy and without _Willow_ we wouldn't have gotten LOTR and having several other movies filmed in New Zealand, so you can have Willow to thank.

When this came out, It thrilled my fantasy loving heart. I was right at an age to fall in love with Madmartigan and Sorcha, they were cast and written to appeal like the vigorous and feisty Indiana Jones-Marion and Han Solo-Princess Leia adventure-romances. And yet when Willow came home to his wife Kiaya I realised that while Madmartigan and Sorcha were fun, they felt kind of hollow to me in comparison to Willow and Kiaya. While I kind of already intellectually knew that personality > appearance, This film really drove that home in my gut.

Kilmer was injured in the scene with the cage. The rigging holding it up gave when he fell out of the bottom and the entire cage fell on his foot. He had a limp for the next few days of shooting and you can see it in some of the scenes. He’s trying to hide it but you can see it in his steps, there is a slight hesitation. Also the scene with Willow in the boat is longer but it was cut from the movie because it would cost too much to edit. You find Willow on the island with his hair soaking wet but there is no reason for it to be wet. The scene is a wild storm and his boat being attacked by a giant fish and it explains what happened to the fourth acorn, he has four but only uses three and it’s never explained in the Final Cut of the movie. He drops the fourth one in the boat while fighting the giant fish, causing the boat to turn to stone and sink. The scene is on the copy of the film released in one format and only that format, I’m not sure if it’s blu-ray or laserdisc

Now that you've watched the film, you may want to watch/react to the THX WOW! demo montage (runs about 8 min long), which combined footage from the Star Wars & Indiana Jones trilogies and Willow. It was originally released only on a demo laserdisc for stores to show off surround sound systems, but you can find it online if you look. There's also a neat documentary, "Soundtrack!", included with it that goes through the process of film sound from set to final version (and while it primarily focuses on a scene from Last Crusade, there are several scenes from Star Wars with the on-set audio such as David Prowse's voice under Vader's helmet).

Something that took (far too) many viewings to realize... Willow mostly fails when he tries to us use the magic of others, the acorns end up useless, and it takes him close to a dozen tries to restore Fin Raziel. But what magic does work? His own. The acorns have a story telling purpose even in their failure.

I own and enjoy the novels (the first has Lucas as a co-writer with Chris Claremont and the second two just have "Story by".) The books really feel like Elora's story (I really like both the nature of her relationship with the villain and the way her powers work), and the world is fleshed out and aside from some high elves, very little of the races/cosmology feels cribbed from Tolkien (with a greater focus and development brownies, trolls, nelwyn and rynn {bipedal otterfolk} as their own peoples, rather than the standard humano-centrism of most fantasies with non-humans as outliers.) In particular, Franjean and Rool have distinct personalities and voices beyond being comic relief. They do however, feel like a massive disconnect (the prologue is one year after the movie and then it picks up twelve years later with most of the original cast having been killed off in a cataclysm.) Willow is older, harder and a conventional dwarven battle-wizard calling himself a much more badass name. (The TV series so far has really kept to the idea that his magic is as much deception as it is spellcraft.) The books are far darker and more serious: the brownies still roast people, but its themes are a lot more about hard choices and the difficulties of uniting instead of dividing than "believe in yourself" and "plucky group of friends face down evil."

Saw this in the theatre when it first came out. The scene when Val Kilmer rolls down the hill in a giant snowball is still one of the funniest scenes I've ever seen. My sister and I couldn't stop laughing. Her kids were embarrassed and kept telling us to be quiet lol. It still cracks me up when I see it now. As far as them trying to recapture my childhood nostalgia, I wish they would stop. For some reason they keep getting it wrong and I want to remember the older stuff for the genuine works they were. Even with the outdated CGI, they hold a special place and cannot be reproduced or recreated. We need new ideas instead of remakes of the old.

22:40 *Rick:* _"His teeth are all fixed."_ 🦷 Yes, *Madmartigan's* teeth were really dirty. But then we see him cleaning them with a twig or somesuch long before now (just before they let him out of the gibbet).

I'm not a fan of KZbin ads, but that was hilarious. When Eric says "I would shut the movie of at this point" and as his finger hit the table it went to an ad. If that was deliberate then hats off to whoever did that. If it was a coincidence then wow!

The thing with the troll-to-dragon is that Willow panicked and tossed out the word that basically means "transformation". Which...yeah. BTW, the movie novelization by Wayland Drew is really, really good and has a lot of the little stuff they cut from the movie (there's a faerie maze at one point where they mention what happened to this 'verse's elves, f'rex - it got cut because they didn't think it was relevant to the plot). *Edit:* However, the (now non-canon) novels that take place after are absolute crapola. Just garbage. Also, the morphing effects was the first time they were used in a movie! Second time was in The Abyss.

Val Kilmer who played Madmartigan and Joanne Whalley who portrayed Sorsha fell in love during the filming of _Willow_ and later married the same year the film came out and had two kids, Jack Kilmer and Mercedes Kilmer unfortunately they divorced in 1996, due to irreconcilable differences but they remained supportive even after they divorce. Jean Marsh who played the evil Queen Bavmorda also appeared in another 1980's fantasy film, _Return to Oz_ (1985) from Disney where she portrayed Queen Mombi also another evil Queen, and like _Willow_ also has a cult following. And Patricia Hayes who played the aging Good Sorceress Raziel also is best known as Urgl in _The Neverending Story_ and appearing in _A Fish Called Wanda_ starring John Cleese, Jamie Lee Curtis, Kevin Kline, and Michael Palin.

@@marcusbierman5310 I never seen the film, but Hayes played Mrs Eileen Coady who was the only eyewitness to the robbery and own three small dogs. Ken (Michael Palin) repeatedly tries to kill her, but each time accidentally kills one of the dogs instead, causing him great distress. But he succeeds when the last dog's death gives her a fatal heart attack.
