I am glad that you are planing on a video for beginners. Bear in mind that the average Joe who really need this is low income and will stay away from the expensive parts. I started solar with a low cost kit in 2009. I have several low cost box to charge tablets and laptops. Remember monocrystaline may be the best but does not do well in cloudy areas. I would love to see a project that keeps the cost to the lowest minmum.

Better way to tape together is lay them on side and use table to align edges. Better yet, stack the batteries in an inside corner - the two battery edges align automatically to the corner faces.

You can now get pre-assembled 12V LiFePO4 batteries with the balance charging circuit built-in to the package, for a bit more than the cost of these battery kits. They're around AU$999 retail for the 100Ah version. You pay the extra because they've done all the hard work of assembling it and adding the balance charging circuit and nicely packaging it all.

Nice video will keep up the good work. Got my teardrop caravan wired up with 230v off grid electrics for under £200 thanks to your posts. Just need upgrade my 100w panel to a 310w panel as I'm not managing to maintain power. I found a panel that measures just 1.5 meters by 0.8m that fits perfect on the flat roof design. I'm using one lead acid battery due to budget with a 110ah rating. Get about a day and a half of power running a 22 litre 230v fridge. So it's nearly perfect for weekend getaways. I've seen 6a from a 100w solar panel which I found amazing. Also had to return a cheap inverter. Said pure sine wave on it but it used the power quick and always sounding its alarming after 5 mins use but providing power. Looked like the grid tie inverter you put a conversation up about concerning safety aspects. P.s. I can recycle those po4 batteries I'd you want to make some room 😎😂

Thanks! Really inexpensive price, it is recommended for the first cell formation charge to use a maximum current of 0.5C and carry them only once at 4 volts per cell (read the manual of each individual brand because it is dangerous to make a mistake) then subsequently they can be downloaded and quietly charged at 3.5V per cell, 14V @ 12V battery and do not drop below 3Volt per cell 12 @ 12volt battery, so they last an eternity!
@winterburan

@@vincentrobinette1507 Sorry, obviously I can't express myself correctly in English, pretend I didn't write it. When I say cell formation, I say that it is the first absolute charge of the cell to be done only and exclusively once only, and it is necessary to unload successively and quickly up to the maximum pefissata voltage 3.5 / 3.6V use this only for the Winston monobloc, logically 4V are so many shops to pay attention, we must never get there again and it is not valid for the other brands, every brand has its own specifications also based on the type of internal electrodes, besides that they are now sold already manufactured by the factory 'importer, the first time it is also recommended to connect them all in parallel to self balance and load them or with a special charger for a single cell or with an adjustable power supply, then create the series for normal use at the minimum and maximum voltages desired for the cycle duration and desired ability.

I went with CALB cells. About $550/100Ah with busbars. Went with bottom balance and quality chargers and low voltage disconnect. These prismatic cells are pretty stable workhorses. 13.68v max charge for the bank and 12v battery disconnect on the inverter. 11.8 on the battery disconnect. That leaves almost all the capacity meat on the bone while steering clear of a voltage cliffs on either side. No top balancing BMS complexity. Simple system that works.

Exactly. Once you dial it in these are solid. And sinopoly, Winston and calb seem to be highest quality cells, so very nice

@@vincentrobinette1507 Bottom balanced and max charging voltage set for the fastest rising cells. After a year and a half testing with cells separated (and also tested in place in parallel groups like a top balancer system would look at) voltages checked at full charge hasn't changed. No cells have moved over time respective to each other. All my cells are still within 100th volt at full charge. Top balancers will charge over 14v. While 13.68 is still on the vertical cliff of the charge cycle it is within the spectrum of my banks voltage where cells still hold tight to each other. If it wasn't I would have no issue lowering it. As it is I am seldom at (intentionally) at 100%. My top voltage of 13.68v/bank was specifically set before onset of individual cell voltage separation after testing.These CALB cells don't drift that I have seen. But then again I am not using them full deep cycles in high 1C + discharge rates ( I can't actually discharge at 600ah anyway) like the car conversion people that have been beating on them for years now. In any case I have never recommended anyone build any system that they don't feel comfortable with and take ownership of their design. Building a DIY lithium battery bank isn't right for everyone even if they buy a 3rd party top balancing system which is a rabbit hole of it's own. For most people a drop-in battery despite the cost is probably better solution if they aren't going to do the work of understanding Lithium batteries advantages and serious limitations. Namely being overly discharged.
@harleyd500
@harleyd500 5 жыл бұрын
@@vincentrobinette1507 Calb cells produce more than their advertised capacity. The cells come with a test sheet that shows each cells tested capacity. My nominally rated 600AH bank (24) 3.2v cells in 3p/4s x 2 configuration could store close to 700AH with enough safeguards to push cells to their maximum with an "active" top balancing BMS to fully fill each cell. I have tested my bank with 13.68v Max and 12v max discharge cuts off producing just over 600AH without getting near the danger zones on either side. That works for me.

(not solar, on the current of the house) Because if you have an accurate charger why would you need a bms during charging? I do not understand the utility, so if you have a bms I just send any current and it will take charge of the battery in the best conditions following the settings? lovely batteries you have. I have an idea to balance the batteries continuously, I want you to know the idea I came up with for some time. Take a 5Kohm resistor on each battery (in parallel + and -) in series, thus the voltage is the same for all batteries. maybe a zener diode in series with the resistance so that the voltage does not come below 3V, if it works in the real world I do not know

If you calculate the costs per KWh they are around 500 $ per KWh. I don't know what they cost in EU, but here you can buy a BYD battery box (a box with batteries, BMS included and ready to connect to the solar inverter) for around 500 € per KWh, VAT included. In my opinion a great product, also with Lifepo 4 cells.

Check out the 215 Ah setup on amazon, cheaper than the 200 Ah set. Near two times the 60 Ah. Where you using your balancer as a BMS?

Thanks so much for all your videos! You’re awesome! I have a 5kw lg resu battery that I really really want to use off grid. Do you know anyway at all that I could make that happen. I guess the battery is designed for grid tied use but it’s a battery right? There’s got to be a way I could use it?

You do some great videos and you always sound so existed. You often mention about batteries being balanced, can't we just get good batteries that don't need balancing?

Thanks. Any idea how many cycles they can handle, say if discharged to 20% each time? What is the weight of each cell?

Great information and I bought your book prior to finding you on KZbin. But I'm thinking . . . they sent you the battery for testing. If I was sending you my product hoping to get good press, would I not make sure the components I am sending are top notch and will test out in a positive fashion. Makes me wonder if they sent you "hand picked" cells. Would you have gotten the same quality if you were just a ramdom purchase . . . ? Next time some organization wishes to enlist your service, perhaps make an agreement you will source their product on the open market and be reimbersed thereafterwards. It would add much need credibility to product reviews. Thanks!

I run all commercial electric lawn maintenance equipment, I was wondering what the best solution would be to install solar panels on my truck and charge my equipment while I'm working? I'd like to run at leas 2x ego super chargers? and maybe also have an option to charger lager commercial equiptment when I eventually can afford electric riding mowers?

Hey bro, thanks for this - I am currently in the process of importing a new 4x4 expedition vehicle and was wanting around 400ah worth of LiPo in exchange for the 200+ AH AGM batteries. Keen to know your thoughts about how many cell cycles these LiPo would get. Also, do you do consulting ? M P.S my off grid project is coming along!!

Sinopoly claims thousands of cycles (I don't remember if it was 1000 to 80% discharge or 2000 or if the 2000 was to 50%). Of course, that life requires you to treat them well -- do not over charge, do not over discharge, even a single cell (which is why you need to keep them reasonably balanced).

For your discharge you should use a boost converter and put that energy into your tesla battery or whatever you are using instead of turning that energy into unwanted heat
