Lyrics:
From the first time the doctor placed you in my arms
I knew I'd meet death before I'd let you meet harm
Although questions arose in my mind, would I be man enough?
Against wrong, choose right and be standin up
From the hospital that first night
Took a hour just ta get the carseat in right
People drivin all fast, got me kinda upset
Got you home safe, placed you in your basonette
That night I don't think one wink I slept
As I slipped out my bed, to your crib I crept
Touched your head gently, felt my heart melt
Cause I know I loved you more than life itself
Then to my knees, and I begged the Lord please
Let me be a good daddy, all he needs
Love, knowledge, discipline too
I pledge my life to you
Just the two of us, we can make it if we try
Just the two of us, (Just the two of us)
Just the two of us, building castles in the sky
Just the two of us, you and I

Obviously there's some personal business going on with Will Smith and his family-Chris kinda just got caught in the crossfire. It's pretty clear they're overdue for some kind of hiatus/reflective period for their health.

I can't begin to explain how much a mother and a father are needed in a child's life. It really takes a village to raise a child. My dad never was there or loved me enough. That has, to this day, left an incredible hole in my life. This song is so bittersweet...

@@chuckytherapper "Why sample a song if it won't be "better"?" Well...because it takes a song about one kind of love and tells a story of another kind of love. And in much greater detail than you'd hear expressed in the kind of song the original is. There are aspects of the original that was sampled that even fit better with the theme of fathers and children, to be quite honest. But that's because the original gave the room for this kind of perspective. By design.

There's one point in the song that I can't stress enough: Let young boys show their emotions even if it comes with tears. It shows that one is human - there's no shame in crying (of course, if there's good reason to cry that is).

This isn’t from an era when rappers could be understood. Will always did things a little differently. He always said he refused to make music he wouldn’t let his children listen to. He didn’t cuss or use fouls language or references that were not child appropriate. He kept his music and his public image clean and respectable so his children could be proud of him. This is something no other rapper has even bothered to attempt.

Lost my dad (and my mom) last summer. They were 73/74 years old, God bless them. I am 42 now. Throughout my childhood and early life, he really didn't do much good for me at all. He was rather the narcissistic type, and I still have big scars from that. But you know what. The last year when he was alive, I was in a great trouble and he finally came through and gave me a huge helping hand. I am so happy and thankful that I can have that experience to look back on now! 💖

Lyrics Just the two of us Will Smith [Intro: Trey Smith] Now Dad this is a very sensitive subject [Chorus] Just the two of us Just the two of us (just the two of us) Just the two of us (just the two of us) [Verse 1: Will Smith] From the first time the doctor placed you in my arms I knew I'd meet death before I'd let you meet harm Although questions arose in my mind, would I be man enough Against wrong, choose right and be standing up? From the hospital that first night Took a hour just ta get the car seat in right People driving all fast, got me kinda upset Got you home safe, placed you in your bassinet That night I don't think one wink I slept As I slipped out my bed, to your crib I crept Touched your head gently, felt my heart melt Cause I know I loved you more than life itself Then to my knees, and I begged the Lord please Let me be a good daddy, all he needs Love, knowledge, discipline too I pledge my life to you [Chorus] Just the two of us, we can make it if we try Just the two of us, (Just the two of us) Just the two of us, building castles in the sky Just the two of us, you and I [Verse 2: Will Smith] Five years old, bringin comedy Everytime I look at you I think man, a little me Just like me, wait an' see, gonna be tall Makes me laugh cause you got your dads ears an all Sometimes I wonder, what you gonna be A general, a doctor, maybe a MC Haha, I wanna kiss you all the time But I will test that butt when you cut outta line, true that Uh-uh-uh why you do that? I try to be a tough dad, but you be makin me laugh Crazy joy, when I see the eyes of my baby boy I pledge to you, I will always do Everything I can, show you how to be a man Dignity, integrity, honor an' I don't mind if you lose, long as you came with it An you can cry, ain't no shame in it It didn't work out with me an your mom But yo, push come to shove, you was conceived in love So if the world attacks, and you slide off track Remember one fact, I got your back [Chorus] Just the two of us, we can make it if we try Just the two of us, (Just the two of us) Just the two of us, building castles in the sky Just the two of us, you and I [Verse 3] It's a full-time job to be a good dad You got so much more stuff than I had I gotta study just to keep with the changin times 101 Dalmations on your CD-ROM See me-I'm tyin to pretend I know On my PC where that CD go But yo, ain't nothin promised, one day I'll be gone Feel the strife, but trust life does go on But just in case, it's my place to impart One day some girl's gonna break your heart And ooh ain't no pain like from the opposite sex Gonna hurt bad, but don't take it out on the next, son Throughout life people will make you mad Disrespect you and treat you bad Let God deal with the things they do Cause hate in your heart will consume you too Always tell the truth, say your prayers Hold doors, pull out chairs, easy on the swears You're living proof that dreams do come true I love you and I'm here for you [Hook] [Chorus] Just the two of us, we can make it if we try Just the two of us, (Just the two of us) Just the two of us, building castles in the sky Just the two of us, you and I [Outro: Trey Smith] (This is a good song Dad, how much am I gettin paid for this?)

When my son was about 5 I rewrote some of the words to this to make it from me, and printed it out. I recently found it on an old USB drive and shared it on Facebook. My son is now 21. Hope he didn't think it's too corny! Love you son!

As a father myself to all you other fathers out there one thing I've learned ultimately: Love your kids no matter what, accept them, spend time with them, and most of all TEACH them and do your best as they grow older to understand them. Don't make the same mistakes our Dad's made with us. You can do this if you try.

I WILL ALWAYS LOVE THIS SONG! I was 16 when I gave birth to my Son. I raised my eldest on my own and the bond we created is so amazing, I can’t describe it in words. I played this song and sang it to my Son all the time. To this day, I can’t play this song without crying.🥺 I feel this song deeply. Having the media in your personal life 24/7 has to be the hardest thing to deal with, along with just trying to keep your insanity. I pray God gives Will the strength to keep being the good man I know he is🙏 Amen.

This reminds me of my dad and I. He always said to me; “If you want to be something be the best.” He also said; “I lived my life son. I did everything a man should do. I had a job. I was a husband and father. I got to watch you guys grow up. Now it’s time to live your life.”

I honestly prefer this cover over the original version. The original song is about the love between two people, which is great and all, but song is about how even though Smith has remarried and has a new son on the way, he ALWAYS be there for his first son as well. Beautiful.

Man tomorrow is my daughter’s 6th birthday and she started singing this song randomly today and I didn’t know she knew it… so I came here to play it. Now I’m sitting here in uncontrollable tears cuz she’s getting big and growing and I just want to be here with her every time she needs me. It’s truly just the two of us as her mom isnt really cut out to be a parent. I just wanna be the best Dad ever for her and everything she ever needs. I love my Princess with everything in me. We can make it if we try❤️🥹
