In terms of nuance And the Maria line is filled with sarcasm In Japanese, she literally says 私はマリア It directly translates as I am maria but it's sarcasm In terms of nuance it's closer to the English "Oh, look at me, I'm maria" It's hinting at saying look I'm divine, but at the same time she says like that because she knows it's not true Saying it too directly fucks this up PS: I speak both English and Japanese fluently And the line about Aqua is directly aiming at the people who consider idols as perfect, even her sweat, which is a dirty thing, is considered as clean Aqua Sarcasm right there This particular line is rendered very naturally in the official English version The artist originally intended it to be delivered in a subtle way

The final part is actually a reference to the end of ep1 (Spoiler for those who didn't watch the anime or read the manga) Ai said with her dying breath "Ruby Aqua, I love you... Ah i was finally able to say it, those words definitely weren't a lie" which is just like the mv from Yoasobi where the last parts of the lyrics were: "I was finally able to say it, this is definitely not a lie, I love you" with Ai hugging her 2 grown up children from behind before Dissapearing. which is why Will perhaps put "two" at the end which were for Aqua and Ruby from Ai's Perspective. But hey, that's just a theory, A music theory.

In my personal opinion, this is how english dubs or covers should be done. While it isn't accurate to the translation, the understanding of the emotions and context of the story, as well as the intentions behind the original song lyrics are better transformed to an English audience. While it may be a bit transformative, ultimately it remains true both to the song and to the story, which in my opinion is more important than trying to stay true to the translation. I love Yaosobi as an artist, but this is the real English version of the song to me.

localization is just as important as a translation! usually, raw meanings, especially for a language like japanese with kanji that mean various things, it could be confusing or even incomprehensible. i usually prefer versions faithful to the original material since sometimes what's really being conveyed may be lost, but there's an art to adapting it in a creative way!

I've just came here after watching the Yoasobi version, Amalee's cover, and now Will's cover. All 3 has their charms. Amalee's cover seems more direct to the Idol's fans, Will's translation is a more directed to Aqua and Ruby, while Yoasobi's version is directed to Aqua and Ruby but their lyrics hide the children's existence from the fans. All 3 versions are beautiful in their own way.

The rhyming in this song is honestly god-tier. While there's other rhyme sounds used, such as the *_ee_* rhymes in the "plain and meek" section, I noticed a majority of the rhymes in the lyrics use the *_ai_* sound, which, if on purpose, is such a subtle but potent way to honor Ai throughout the whole song! I'm obsessed with this kind of lyric crafting!!! I've bolded and italicized all the " *ai* " rhymes I could find, sorry if I missed any! I think my favorite line by far in this entire cover is "And I still haven't loved any other soul I meet" IT JUST HITS! The official english version been "And I've not been in love with anybody before" it still shares the same message of "I've never loved anyone in my entire life" but this cover's version just manages to hit so much harder. If I had to guess it's probably because of the idea of "I still haven't loved any other soul I meet" since the idea of not been able to love a SINGLE soul/person that you have ever met in your entire life is just so shocking and unbelievable yet so sad The wording of the official doesn't have that impact because of the wording, "Been in love" is normally seen in a romantic context in english so it hits less hard as you would likely think that they've never loved someone *Romantically*, not that they've never loved someone in general (specially if you've never read an English translation of the original Japanese)

The lines for Aqua and Rubi/Ruby are just so cute and extremely cool, and the last part where "I love you" instead of a normal "too" meaning a return of the affection from her fans, was meant for her two precious children (who were a secret to the public) as "I love you two" whom she never said this line to (I think?) until she was stabbed and about to die. Unpopular opinion: I prefer this one over the offical YOASOBI's English version and I think this is superior... The problem of the YOASOBI's version is they tried to stick with matching Japanese soundings and meaning at the same time, which broke the flow of the English lyric and the wording ended up too verbose (and sounding way too fast as the result). Some context doesn't even make sense because it only exists in Japanese for example "Maria" (as in Virgin Mary) is well known in Japanese but doesn't have the same meaning in English world. Here the "Mary and I’m so divine" is a much better translation. The official English version sounds good only if you have a prior listening experience with the Japanese version. If you only listen the English version for the first time it can't stand on its own.
