I'll miss this podcast. You all have such great in depth insights into analyzing media and you're really well at communicating it (unlike some other channels that are very shallow with their critiques and analysis) I love y'all 💜💚

Awesome. I was bummed out that SMTM is ending, however I'm happy with the news, especially with what Raymond said about the new direction you guys are going with the new film podcast. I am truly excited and cannot wait.

The more i think about it the more I really like the Dante's inferno interpretation that Raymond was introducing. They even start Dante's journey in the book by crossing the river acheron that connects limbo to the upper layers of hell. And it makes perfect sense why the tested individuals in the movie are all children. Wonka would represent the guide Virgil who's testing the children's virtues and worthiness of transcendence to paradise. Charlie would probably be interpreted by Wonka as betrayal at first. Betrayal for breaking his rule after showing so much promise. Betrayal is even worse than the other sins in the story of Dante because it first requires trust. But Charlie redeems himself by giving wonka's intellectual property back in the form of the gobstopper, earning his trust back. They then transcend up out of hell (factory) and even transcend earth. They end up flying over the entire city (world) which could easily be interpreted as a transcendence to heaven. I also don't think that the thing the kids are asked to trade away for material wealthis trivial. Everlasting "gobstopper". What they're symbolically trading away here is actually their everlasting "life". Very cool episode, thanks for the new idea!

It's so cool that every year that goes by people see more and more in this movie. I wonder if one day we'll look back at it with the kind of reverence we have for classics like the book Great Expectations.

There's no earthly way of knowing Which direction we are going There's no knowing where we're rowing Or which way the river's flowing Is it raining, is it snowing Is a hurricane a-blowing Not a speck of light is showing So the danger must be growing Are the fires of Hell a-glowing Is the grisly reaper mowing YES!! the danger must be growing For the rowers keep on rowing And they're certainly not showing Any signs that they are slowing

I'm curious, while Wonka sings this, is he, himself, worried about the state of society? Or is he singing it in a mocking tone, suggesting that society is paranoid and therefore always looking elsewhere but the present?
