well, that's not how movies are shot... so the close up of Gene isn't at the same time as the reactions of the kids and probably not even on the same day or even with them on the lot... so that's an easily provable fallacy... but I'm sure it has a bit of a kernel of a truth.. perhaps that it was an improvisation on Wilder's part but the rest, that it frightened the kids and that's their true reaction, is pure embellishment, a great story, but factually false due to the mechanics of how movies are actually made...

When filming the scary tunnel scene, the actor's reactions in the film was genuine and they weren't acting when Wonka starts singing and has his screaming rant which was unscripted and the cast especially Peter Ostrum and Jack Albertston were terrified and had thought Gene Wilder had gone into a psychotic meltdown. The film uses various footage from other unknown theatrical films for the boat scene as tunnel images, including a spider, a giant centipede crawling on a man's face, a human eyeball, a chicken's head cut off by an ax, a chameleon eating a bug, and Wonka's rival Mr. Slugworth. Denise Nickerson - who played Violet Beauregarde - didn't want to do the nose-picking bit; she had a crush on Peter Ostrum - who played Charlie Bucket - and didn't want to embarrass herself.
