With wonderful deathless ditties We build up the world's great cities. And out of a fabulous story We fashion an empire's glory; One man with a dream, at pleasure, Shall go forth and conquer a crown; And three with a new song's measure Can trample an empire down, We, in the ages lying In the buried past of the earth Built Nineveh with our sighing, And Babel itself with our mirth; And o'erthrew them with prophesying To the old of the new world's worth; For each age is a dream that is dying, Or one that is coming to birth.

The lines come from "The Ode" a poem from Arthur O'Shaughnessy. The poem itself is driven by the hope of inspiration. Artists who build upon the future from their dreams and fantasy worlds. In other words don't let anyone tell you something doesn't exist if you wish it. If you can dream it you can achieve it. Its a life lesson more than anything.

I take it as a Wonka putting the bratty little girl in her place. I think in the context of the scene it's actually a very stern meaning. He's not trying to inspire her but remind her that he has created his own world and scolding her for her childish dismissal of what she had no part in making. The poem itself talks about the power of artists to topple empires with their creations by lighting in the hearts of new generations the inspiration to create their own future.

I love this line because it perfectly sums up what the essence of what Willy Wonka is all about. Veruca, in this scene, is suggesting that the idea of tasting a Snozberry is ridiculous because, to her, they don't and can't exist. Wonka counters this by essentially telling her that whether something is "real" or not isn't simply decided by whether people know about it and accept it as "real". Something doesn't necessarily need to exist in the current moment in order for you to experience it just as vividly as any other "real" thing.

Seeing this clip out of context makes me appreciate how great the sound design was in this movie. It's crazy how the footsteps at the start are such a normal sound, but hearing them instantly brings back good memories of this movie. They're just a bit exaggerated, like something from an old radio show, and it pulls me into the scene. It's impressive that a foley artist can add such atmosphere with such mundane sounds--no music or weird sound effects needed.

You silly goose, it’s not meant to directly explain. “We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams,” is a direct quote from Arthur O’Shaughnessy’s 1873 poem “Ode.” The poem celebrates the role of artists and dreamers as those who shape the world through imagination and creativity. By using this line in response to Veruca Salt’s practical question about “Snozzberries,” Wonka avoids literal explanations and instead emphasizes his whimsical world, where literal answers often matter less than embracing wonder and dreams.
