Willys Jeep CJ5 Custom Roof Rack! Easy Do it Yourself At Home!

Check out this custom, easy to make roof rack that I whipped up for the old Jeep. This roof rack is built out of 1/2" conduit (EMT) that I picked up from the local big box store. It welds easy with the Hobart MIG welder (just make sure you're outside) and bends into shape without too many issues. It held up great on the first outing, though I didn't challenge it with much weight (yet). What do you think? What's next for the old CJ5?

Oh man, that roof rack came out sweeeet! Great job, well done!! I have a 1958 CJ5 with a hardtop looking like yours except my doors have sliding plexiglass windows and they actually welded the hard top in. I was considering to grind the hardtop off and put a soft top in, I am not sure yet, because in the summer I like that topless jeep look. But you make your Jeep looking sexy all white and with that nice looking roof rack, it looks like you are ready for a desert storm :-)

Thanks! I like the hard top, it stays on year-round. Soft tops are a pain to install and they don’t hold up in the weather, so in summer I just pull my doors off. Thanks for the kind words and for watching the channel!

I like it. My Late Dad taught me Why buy it if you can make it. When I got my 67 Ford Mustang from my cousin the factory battery tray was gone .My cousin says their cheap just buy one. I had some 14 gauge sheet metal and in about 20 mins. I had a battery tray. Now does it look like the one Ford made.? No. Does it hold the battery safe and secure.? Yes.

That's the same theory I usually operate by! I've built all sorts of stuff for cars over the years just to save a little money.

Really dig the way your roof rack came out. I always enjoy seeing the progress you are making with your old cj5. I'm planning to have mine out hunting this year as well. Curious what your plans are with your sbc 4.3L ? Are you planning to mate it to a granny 4 speed or just slap it into the jeep when the time comes?

Thanks for watching! I am slowly building the 4.3L, it should be ready to install this fall/winter. My plan is to mate it to a stock transmission. In fact- I have another trans/transfer case combo with a SBC bellhousing bolted up to it ready to go. From the research I've done, it should be strong enough, especially if I keep from putting bigger tires on the Jeep.
