I own a 1967 CJ 6 with the same rusted and totally compromised rear bed I seen this and got so stoked to steal your awesome repair idea. I hope you see this comment, I've been over hauling my Jeep for going on ten years and also have a couple clever repairs. I've been a jeep guy since my first vehicle. My 6 has a metal truck style cab so the back is always visible Ive been wanting to fix the bed forever. You have inspired me! I recently lost some walnut trees in a storm, I have a a friend who can mill the walnut into the boards needed.thanks for the great idea and sharing with you tube.

In highschool a friend came into a little money so he bought some lawn care equipment and a used box truck. He left freshly cut grass in the box truck which swelled the wooden floor up almost 18 inches in a big half circle. Just thought I'd throw that out there for amusement/life lesson reasons. Love the build. 👍

I think that's a jim-dandy of a job! Maybe just a little waterproofing on the boards? I'd definitely waterproof them very well underneath,. I really enjoy watching your videos. Love the format, not a bunch of foolishness. The music is relaxing. Great fun. Keep up the work

I made a 3/4 Plywood Floor, completely removeable, for the entire rear floor of my 1993 YJ. It has 2 flat fold handles, and after removing a couple of hold down bolts, it pops right out. I am too old to be crawling under these old Jeeps, so accessing fuel pump, filter, exhaust, makes my Jeep Enjoyment all the better. A 1" Body Lift made it better too.

Beautiful job! You take your time and always do quality work (not to mention being talented). A 50/ 50 mix of linseed oil and turpentine will soak in well and not dry sticky. Should take several coats to get good penetration. You can recoat it if necessary later on without any trouble too. Again, nice work and thanks for the ideas...

I work with this product and oak won't take much of it, but it'll work fine. Again, the ability to work forward and back without peeling is good. For you other guys, they still make a real linseed paint which is infinitely thin, durable, and can work forward and back. So action and durability of tractor paint but no thickness or peeling.

Neat, tidy and strong, pretty much same as I did the bed on my Power Wagon only I used countersunk head screws on the loading edge. You could give the boards a couple coats of raw linseed oil for a start, then give another couple coats in a month or so.

A suggestion to protect the wood and extend it's life is to brush it down with linseed oil, (flax seed oil) without it the wood will dry out and get brittle or soak up rain, swell warp& split. Back in the day all paints were oil based, that oil was linseed oil, they used that formula for centuries because it works.

That really added character to the Jeep. Too late now but I think I'd have ship lap the edges to prevent any water working its way in. Also the button-head bolts are cool. Find some stove bolts that are oxide coated flat black. Stain the wood to bring out that grain, or just plain water seal. Anyway about it great job.

Great ideas! I wish I was a better wood worker ship lap edges would have been great. Thank you for watching!

No, it's no problem: run it over a table saw to put a groove in each side and put a short board or spline. Nothing needs to change and I've seen this in 1910 barn floors. Although yes, water coming up in without a spline was a thought.

Just tip on my jeep project I've found Rust-Oleum makes a black spray rust converter . It works well ,dries fast , is tough, and has a good semi flat finish . Looks good under hood and underneath body. Found it at Wally world for 6 bucks but I'm sure it went up.
@SevenBarSalvage2 жыл бұрын
I love that stuff! I didn’t show it but I hit all that rusty metal with that rust converter before the boards went on. Thank you!
@thelarsongarage2 жыл бұрын
You really had your work cut out for you trying to fix all that rust and multiple layers of steel. The end result looks awesome. Maybe a torched/burned finish would help to "age" the fresh planned boards to match the patina of the Jeep.

Route a 1/4" X 1" on each board saves the effort of using all those expensive button head bolts and leaves the floor flush. front to back. Countersink the carriage bolts. I prefer the look of a tight wood-to-metal fit, very professional.

Paint the wood with POR-15 it will outlast anything else you try. Mar-K did a very long study on wood finishes to see which brand would last the longest and POR-15 won...look it up! I've had it on my bed wood for 8 years and it still looks great! Also, I hope you left a gap on the bed sides so the wood can expand and contract as the humidity changes...
@SevenBarSalvage2 жыл бұрын
I’ve used POR15 in the past and it’s great but never in wood, great idea! I ended up with about a 1/4 inch gap on both sides between the wood and angle, hopefully that’ll be enough! Thank you!
