Great fabrication skills there. You’ve created a nice, neat and compact package for that fuel tank. Looks like factory!

I see this is 5 years ago, but, a horizontal square tubing ahead of the fuel tank, between the frame rails, would add some of the bracing lost when the V brace came out. The rear most cross member had that notch cut out of it too, so all the more reason to reinforce those frame rails. Better late than Never

I made a follow up to this video a few months ago and reworked the whole thing! You’re right I made some errors in this video but I think second time is the charm 😉

That’s a great idea. I will be starting on my dads 51 cj3a soon and wanted to get rid of the under seat tanks. I’m wondering if you could turn that tank around and run a filler hose up to the stock fill location on the drivers side. Then it would look more stock. Love your videos, you have given me great ideas.

Just curious and maybe this is a dumb question but what are the main reasons to get rid of the under seat tank? Is it no longer sitting on flammable liquid mainly and getting more capacity? I ask because I was toying with putting 2 under seats in so I can get more capacity, keep my rear storage by not adding fuel cell and keep under body clearance.
@SevenBarSalvage10 ай бұрын
The 2 main reasons was not sitting on the gas tank and seat placement I wanted to run later bucket seats. And you could run later seats and still run an under seat tank. Today I would say have both for extra fuel storage. It was a fun experiment! Good question!

The previous owner did the same conversion to mine and even with only having the F-Head, I’ve found that removing the rear K-Brace is a bad plan. I’ll be removing my rear tank and putting another K-Brace in the rear
@SevenBarSalvage3 жыл бұрын
What issue did removing the brace cause?
@Alaska_Engineer3 жыл бұрын
I’ve had this CJ for nearly 25 years and the conversion was done before I got the Jeep. I don’t wheel my CJ hard but now that I’m doing a frame-off I have now THREE disadvantages... 1) can’t tow a trailer to hunt or camp (I have a small military trailer) 2) no center pull point if you have to extract someone (or be extracted) 3) now that I’m doing a body-off, I can see that the frame crossmembers are beginning to work loose.

Thanks for showing this. I have a '57 CJ5 that I bought as a pile of parts and this is the one thing I am not looking forward to doing. Everything else you have done has shown me the way. BTW I'm thinking plastic tank, thoughts?
@SevenBarSalvage Жыл бұрын
I’m about to put a plastic tank in my cj5 (just a stock under seat replacement) I’m curious how good the quality is. I think plastic is better than metal most likely! Make sure to watch parts 2 and 3 of the rear tank conversion!
@douglasedwards66362 жыл бұрын
For the gas tank conversion is there anyplace where you listed all the parts required to do it. I'm assuming the tank is a stock from somewhere. Thanks in advance. I would be going the conversion in a 1960 CJ 5 and the rear of my frame looks identical to yours. I really don't want to use a fuel cell..
@SevenBarSalvage2 жыл бұрын
It should all be in the description right under the video, if not I can email you the list. Make sure you watch parts 2 and 3 also I ended up reworking this for more clearance! Thank you for watching!

I am doing the same conversion to my CJ3B. How did you vent your tank? I am using the same tank and a '76 CJ5 rear fuel filler neck and hoses. Dave Winne Liverpool, NY
@SevenBarSalvage2 жыл бұрын
Right now I’ve just got a vent screen with a check ball in it in case of roll overs. I’ve done some research on using the cj5 vapor canister and PCV system but it’s pretty complicated and expensive. Make sure you check out my latest video on the rear tank swap I had to fix some mistakes I made in this video! Thanks!

Its amazing how much you learn in a year! There’s not enough room on these old Jeeps to bolt it to the bottom of the crossmember. If I had to do it over again I would have made my own skid plate or even my own gas tank. Thank you for watching!

Try going into Google and ask for gas tanks replaced tanks, don't asked for a jeep or willis jeep tanks to hard to come by You need measurements for your tank to fit.

@@SevenBarSalvage i love to work on classic automobiles.. I want to get a jeep myself. But right now the finance for buying one is not there for me. It takes money to build a great jeep, there are many great companies out there that make great parts for our vehicles I have a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 that I really want bring it up to better standards. It's only rear wheel drive and i would love to make it four wheel drive but it cost a bit, hopefully in time i can get my truck to where I want it Good luck with your jeep and hopefully you get it to your desire.
