Hi Brian, nice job with the transmission and overdrive. Glad to hear you're happy with Herm. I've been looking at his overdrives for a while. Looking forward to the front and rear axles. You've been covering everything I plan on doing! I really appreciate the time you take to produce these videos.

Great video, I'm enjoying your channel. I noticed you still haven't mounted the flange bearing for your clutch linkage. How are you going to attach the bearing? I'm going to try to recreate your setup, but missing that detail?

Good demo. Tell me please, why do I not see the ring and pinion being improved from say: 4.88 to 1 like in my 1954 willys station wagon? It has the dana 44 axle in back and a dana 25 in the front. It has a 283 V8 mated to a T90 transmission and a dana 18 transfer case. It would be nice to do modern speeds but not butcher the vehicle. Thanks for your interrest.

I put one of these ATV overdrives in my Willys. It won't stay engaged in 1 to 1 under heavy acceleration. Herm said I needed to add shims behind the planetary gear, I'm up to .080 but it still jumps out of gear. It is especially annoying when I'm off roading. I have to use a bungee strap to keep it in gear, which works, but still isn't right. Been trying off and on for years to work out a fix with Herm, but I've practically given up at this point. Nope, not the shift linkage out of adjustment either.
@metalshaperJeep7 жыл бұрын
the shims should have worked on your jeep. Do you remember what the stickout was from the transfer case when you installed it? If you have any information I may be able to help you out. I have also in the past changed out the spring and ball that holds the shift rod in the detent. Main thing is don't let it go to long with it popping out of gear, things are wearing in there when that happens.
@MrGunPilot7 жыл бұрын
Original stick out was around .670 as I recall. After several exchanges with Herm and subsequent shim additions I'm up to .750 now. Based on the instructions, I thought this excessive, but he said the .677 (or 0.667 depending on which reference in the instructions you use) is only an approximation. I've asked him several times over email/phone, but each time his response is always "...working on a solution, give me a week or so". I do know however that in my case the shift rod will travel an additional 0.110" or so past the ball/spring detent in the rail. I suspected the detent slot to be machined in the wrong spot, or perhaps the shift fork itself may need to be adjusted forward on the rail to force the gears into deeper engagement (if this is even a possibility). I don't know, I'm speculating as I don't know that much about the complete design. I do know I chose a new unit in hopes of avoiding just this type of challenge with a used or rebuilt unit.
@metalshaperJeep7 жыл бұрын
99% of the overdrives I have installed worked perfectly with the .677 stickout. I have had to shim only one out of the many I have installed for customers and it was in a CJ2A. I suspect that the problem is in the shift rod, or your fork is excessively worn out. How long have you had the unit installed? Did this problem occur from the moment you installed the unit? Let me know. How is the transmission condition, are you certain the rear bearing and complete mainshaft components are in good shape? I have some ideas but need you to give me some answers to above questions so I can narrow it down. Will wait to hear from you again. Brian
@MrGunPilot7 жыл бұрын
None of the components should be worn out, everything was new or rebuild when the brand new ATV unit was installed. The entire package has 1,000 or fewer miles on it currently. It never jumps out of overdrive, only direct. I rigged a hold back mechanism in the floor shortly after it did it the first couple of times. I was on a steep hill climb once when it jumped out of gear and created a tense moment. I'll eventually pull it all back out and take some measurements. If I knew it was going to be so problematic I'd have invested the $1000 elsewhere.
@MrGunPilot7 жыл бұрын
No worries Brian, I don't want to bug you with this problem. It's something that should have been corrected when it first arose. I just didn't have time to keep pulling it in and out a couple of years ago to troubleshoot.

Good job on the vid! With the stock engine, gearing, tire size, etc., what will be a "comfortable" cruising speed with the overdrive installed?
@metalshaperJeep7 жыл бұрын
I like to keep the speed of these old willys around 50 mph. You can certainly go faster but I don't like to keep higher speeds for very long. Remember going is only half the battle, you still have to think about stopping. keep watching and i will show you the brake system I like to use when installing an overdrive.
@michaelwmccreary7 жыл бұрын
That makes sense. I bought my CJ2a in need of a total restoration. It runs and I have driven it around the yard but never up to any considerable speed due to the brakes not working. I'm glad you will be covering the brakes in a future vid. Thank you!
@metalshaperJeep7 жыл бұрын
Brakes will be covered soon, stay tuned.

I'm installing a used Warn OD now - stickout is .681" instead of expect .677". I'm going ahead with the installation assuming .004" difference won't matter. If it does matter, what can be done about it?

Can you explain how this works? does it get rid of a gear on the transfer case or does it now have 4 low, 4 hi, 2 drive, and overdrive? thanks.
@metalshaperJeep6 жыл бұрын
the gear is removed from the back of the transmission shaft and replaced with the overdrive unit. It basically reduces your rpm by about 27%. So you can split every gear. For instance first gear, then first gear overdrive, second gear, second gear overdrive. Whatever combination you want, even reverse can be shifted into overdrive. The jeep still has 4 low and high, 2 wheel drive , and neutral. Hope that helps with your question. Brian
@dgiorgi1725 Жыл бұрын
Hi, great video !!! Can I just leave the overdrive "IN" all the time? I have a small block 302 and it seems unnecessary to constantly split gears. There is plenty of power in second gear to start with a t98 trans. Will I damage this overdrive doing this? Can I also use reverse with it in overdrive. Sorry for the dumb question and thanks in advance.
@metalshaperJeep Жыл бұрын
yes, you can leave it IN all the time. No problem in forward or reverse.

Hey Brian I installed one of Herm’s OD’s it will not stay in direct drive. Herm sent me a .060 shim to install under the nut still pops out of direct drive, overdrive works great. Do you have any suggestions as to what I can do to correct this problem?

I would need to know your measurement from the the back of the gear assembly to the transfer case. Be very accurate when measuring . Brian

Is it possible to mount a front winch drive chain case on the back of that overdrive? I'd like to have both overdrive and a pto winch
@metalshaperJeep6 жыл бұрын
If you watch the video of my CJ6 Jeep you will see me setting some steel with the front winch. On that jeep I have an overdrive, dual shift pto, front winch, and rear wrecker winch. You will need an adapter to put the pto to the overdrive but they are easily available and you should not have any trouble. Brian

I just installed my overdrive that was working on my rebuilt t-90. The transfer case was fine. However, she won’t spin when in gear. Neutral is fine, but when in any gear, I can’t get the transfer case to spin. It just locks up. I can only turn the clutch disk a few degrees. Thoughts on what could be wrong?
@metalshaperJeep4 жыл бұрын
double check to make sure you have the correct unit, 26 or 29 tooth for your application. Not sure what you are working on or where the overdrive came from but there was also a 27 tooth for early vehicles. Just make sure of what you have. Then take it apart and make sure the front blocking ring did not move out of position when you assembled it. If it did the entire unit will be locked up and if you run it like that it will be severely damaged. Take it apart and start again.
