Our family had one of these that my uncle had for many years. My dad bought it and I learned to drive in it. Yes, the middle lever is for 2WD or 4WD and the smallest one is for HI-LO range. Some even had a 4'th lever for overdrive as these trucks would barely do 55 mph. Ours was a 1954 and had a flathead 226 CID Hurricane 6. The transmission is a Borg Warner T90 3-speed. I believe the name changed to Jeep after 1960 and this style was made until 1963. Hope this helps! Great find!

My grandfather had a 1963 Willys jeep wagon. He converted it for camping by taking out the rear seat and making a bed and a counter top for it. Storage under the bed and counter top. He stored a 2 burner Coleman stove in there for cooking. He also made screens for the front windows that would swing up and clip into clips on the headliner. He also built a big rack on the top for carrying his boats on it (one at a time, not 2 at the same time) with a ladder down the side. He wanted the jeep to have the wide flat fenders do he could tie a deer to it when he went hunting. When I was a kid and he would take my grandmother and I shopping, he would take a hassock from the living room and place it in the back behind the front seats for me to sit on. The hassock would slide around a little bit when he went around corners. This was before seat belt laws and putting kids in car seats. I miss that jeep. No one else had one. When people saw it around town, every one knew who it was. His was red and white.

I actually went camping in a model like this in the mountains of Camp Pendleton back in the early 70's. We caught rainbows in a stream and roamed the fire breaks with ease. If I recall the jeep has tripple granny and can literally walk up a very steep grade almost straight up.

My father bought a 1960 Willy's panel delivery truck (it was similar to a SUV). It had a 4 cyl "L head" engine-one valve in the block the other in the head. Our family made a trip from St Louis,MO to San Fran, CA and back in it. I thought it was the coolest truck ever-wish I had it now. I instantly recognized the engine in the video-it is a Chevy 194 or 230....most likely from an early 1960's Nova. I had a 1964 Nova with a 194 - it lasted for over 500,000 miles-averaged 25 mpg. Hope you keep the 194 in the Willy's.....

Simple. Buy an old truck and put a newer drivetrain in it (or selected parts of a newer drivetrain). I’m real partial to the bodies of the 50s and 60s mainly (love old Apaches and Power Wagons). Also love the Willys, especially the old Overlands.

My 1991 Chevy c1500 with the original 4.3 v6 had 687,000 miles when I sold it, The thing would not die, smokes on start up, rings or valve guide. I ended up selling it before I made a 2,000 mile move to another state, Didn't trust it tho I'm sure it would of made it, I did drive 6 hours away to a friends house going around 75 - 80mph 3 or 4 different times, funny passing new cars in a old work truck on the highway. Tranny was also replaced at 190,000 miles back in 2002. But other than that shes been the most reliable truck I've ever owned with the typical wear and tear parts.

This is awesome, I have a 41 Chevy pickup and I had the same exact problem when mine was locked up so I put pb blaster in the cylinder heads and then eventually got it free by moving the fly wheel a little each day. After I got it spinning I got the starter to work. Then I got my distributor and coil to work. And then today my girlfriend and I checked the spark plug wires and plugs. All work but 2. And I have spares. I haven’t put any money into the truck and if I can get it started for completely free then I’d be really happy

You got the makins of a War Wagon, for sure - this thing is gorgeous. The hole up high on the rear of the drivers side cab is from an older antennae/mount and the "after shave" bottle from the right side tool box is a hip flask, with the cap being the shot glass. Good luck!!

Yes, left and right threads for either side. My first light truck had me and several broken spanners perplexed until I worked out what the 'L' on the end of the stud meant! You sure are setting yourself a task. Yep, throw that engine out and replace it. Wheel bearings, brake lines, fuel lines, shockers, front end rubbers, brake shoes, the welding but at least those dinky lights work. It would look cool with wood paneling down the sides where the tool boxes are. Good luck and I look forward to watching your progress and your other vids if you get the time.

Those two small shifters next to your regular transmission gear shifter are twin sticks for the transfer case. A twin stick transfer case allows you to engage the front and rear axles separately rather thin at once like your average single stick transfer case. For example you can engage only the front axle and make it a front-wheel drive or only the rear and make it a rear wheel drive, or you can engage them both and have your four-wheel drive. Obviously without climbing under there looking at it I can't verify that just from a video, but it looks like a twin stick transfer case to me

Your driver side lug nuts are left hand threads because back in the day, engineers, believed the tires going forward on drivers side would undo the lug nuts. the passenger side was right hand and there for would tighten if any thing going forward. they changed that idea in the late 60's. love the truck. and really want to see the build. get a tripod and show us the work. good luck.

Nice project! you are correct about the shifters. Some of them have two shifters to control the front and rear outputs independently but yours does both at once. the pto winch setup is worth as much as the whole jeep. Ebay is not the place to buy jeep parts for sure try to get everything from junk yards i always see willys trucks at my yard. Im not sure id bother with the dump bed setup but i guess it would be handy. Im sure your not going to be doing a show quality restoration anyway lol. That cab is in nice shape im jealous we dont get that kind up here in the north

The alternator brackets you need are off a mid 60s to mid 70s Chevy truck with a inline 6, that's a 292 if I remember correctly. the alternator wiring is easy. I would also suggest that you swap out the distributor with a electronic one from the mid 70s and save your self the headache of dealing with the points. Really nice old jeep.

I'd strip the frame & see about any reinforcement (if needed) & replace all electrical, all hoses, tear the motor down, new water pump & etc (if you can find parts) I watched a you tube video & i saw a auction in Texas I think, where they sold 3 similar to yours. I hope you put in the time & money & get her going, one of the willy's I say had a Cool W on the tailgate! They are beautiful trucks! GOOD LUCK!

They made them in 6 volt ,12 volt and 24 volt for military . Check for a local shop that rebuilds alternators and generators . They can spin it for you and tell you what it needs. My guess is a 1958 but I don't think they made many changes on them. As a kid my neighbors had a station wagon model they used for plowing their drive way in winter. That's why I noticed the one down the road. They are cool but they are small.

Did those have alternators or generators I replaced a couple of generators to alternators before . Generators were hard to work on especially if you were to do anything with the external charge regulators. Just throw an alternator with 3 wires. 1 wire hot 2wire hot from the ignition 3 ground to the warning light on the dash board. Generators were nightmares. They were DC motors with very good amount of voltage drops.

The pulley was made at Gold Foundry Machine Works in Independence, Missouri. The Smallest shifter is the PTO, the other to smaller Shift Knobs are for the Swinging Transfer Case, and then you got the main Shift Knob.

It looks like a 230 or 250, I have the 250 in my 68 Chevy Van. I don't know the block layout of a 194, so I can't speak for that, but the 292 has its motor mounts offset. The passenger side mount is on the other side of the fuel pump. The 230 and 250 use the same block, so you would probably have to pull the stamped number to the left of the distributor to be sure.

I agree with talking to Johnathan W. Mystery oil and take the radiator off then you’ll have better access with a breaker bar lug wrench to see if it will move slightly. Then after a few days it’s still stuck I think an old six from a junk yard that’s not frozen is the cheap fix on it. Good Luck!

Generator: If you stay with a generator (and you will probably will for a while) note that the old Autolite ones had to be "polarized' when installed by flashing across 2 terminals on the voltage regulator. I don't know all of the regulator types but you should be able to find an old Motor's manual with the info. Those old rears with the key in them were a pain. Good job you found the right kind of puller. Omen? While typing this I had the TV on and just happened to look at it to find that the movie playing had a pickup identical to yours. Same color and all.

2 small shifters, 1- to select hi/low, 2- 4low, 4high,and 2wh drive. The button on the dash is how you start the engine after you turn the ignition switch to run. Atleast that's how my 48 willy's was. Mine was a 6 volt system I converted over to a 12 volt system. My fuel gauge was a light bulb, I could watch my voltage on a meter and if it wasn't charging correctly I had wired in a headlight reistat switch I could turn up for more voltage or turn down for less. Wipers were vacuum.

Those old generators work like a electric motor. 6 or 12 volts depending on what you have just hook up battery to the poles and the motor will spin if good. New gererators need to be polarized to charge when rebuilt, or new if you find one

i really wish i could come over there and do the wiring for you, i could rewire that thing in a few hours also to test the generator just ground the case of it, then put 12 volt to each terminal and if it spins on both ones, then it is good

Gen to alt swap fairly simple. GM alt with self activating regulator can be had at parts store. Try NAPA. They were made to convert old tractors. Only one wire to conect. The regulator was internal on GM alts. and so you only had to replace the OEM regulator, simple fix.Check around small town places where they fix old tractors.

that bottole jack is cool & easily fixed if needed! just refill it & maybe replace O-rings.

Original bed would be fairly easy to rebuild w/ sheet steel, some square tube an stuff off the old bed. Heavier gauge sheet is easy to weld w/out warping. Finding some correct fenders might be another story. The winch front and rear would definitely stay!

My son gave me a Parts manual for Willys Overland utility vehicles/ 1946-1964. He paid a whoppin' $1.49 for it at Goodwill. It has parts lists on one side and you flip the book over and it has a rebuild manual.. I hope you can get it going.

The transfer case is a Dana 18 or a Dana 20. The two little shifters are two or four wheel drive for the one closest to the driver and high or low gear for the other one.

Don't worry about what engine it is just yet. You have to take it out along with the drivetrain anyway to get them rebuilt.
