Still listening to Gerry Rafferty regularly, since his first recording. It's like visiting with a bedloved, comforting old friend. ❤ Thank you, Gerry.

I found Gerry's music late in life and I'm so glad I delved into his catalogue of, what to me is brilliant, brilliant music and songwriting. Like the fan in this programme said, it's impossible to pick a top 10 of Gerry's songs. I find myself listening intently to the lyrics of each of his songs. Just wonderful, wonderful music. RIP the musical genius Gerry Rafferty.

Ditto Andy, Followed Gerrys career since 1970. Stealers Wheel blew me away! His corroboration with Joe Egan & band was brilliant! And had a stunning solo career. There are too many songs to mention that bring a tear to my eyes. I feel sorry for those that haven't had the musical experience of listening to the Scottish genius . RIP. Gerry.

Like loads of folk I grew up knowing Baker Street and Night Owl and never really thought about the bloke in the big glasses who sang them. I watched the tribute concert and then this doc and then plunged into all the music I'd missed. I have been absolutely blown away by the brilliance of so many of his songs and am now a bit obsessed. Trouble is the nature of his story adds such a poignancy to them that I can't get half way through most of them without weeping. An amazing talent.
@magnificentmuttley154 Жыл бұрын
@3Dboneprinting Its safe for me to say that anyone who grew up with Gerry's music throughout the 70s & 80s understands exactly how you feel. Any hit playing on the radio has a certain power were all familiar with; usually the power to create its mood, whatever that mood may be, in the environment in which it is playing... But when were talking about Gerry's music, there is a depth & a poetic dexterity that is so much deeper & powerful than anything else I'd heard on rock radio at that time. In my opinion Gerry's music belonged more on easy listening or soft rock stations than on rock, pop, or mix ststions. Easy listening & soft rock are where the listeners were more contemplative, just like what you expect from Gordon Lightfoot fans, or Harry Chapin fans, for example Seems the only songs of Gerry's the radio played were from the _City to City_ album. The only exceptions I ever heard were _Stuck In the Middle With You,_ & _Get It Right Next Time_ Whether youre a musician or not, the noble & moving influence of people like Gordon Lightfoot, Harry Chapin, Paul Davis, John Denver, James Taylor, & of course Gerry is immense; profound. Fortunately you are part of that time, so I know you understand this... I am fully convinced their music made better people out of all of us; three generations who were alive at that time. And we are grateful to have coincidence to have been in their time Gerry is sorely missed. This world can never have enough like him. And it is a darker place without him ❤️😪 Rest In Peace: Gerry Rafferty 1947-2011 Rafael Ravenscroft 1954-2014 Tommy Eyre 1949-2001

RE: Mike Jenkins... You should read Mike more about the last 17 years of his life to find out what triggered what made him unhappy. Perhaps you probably move on better in your life when you lose someone you love a lot and loved you. Not every human does move forward like cold robots without a conscience automatically in their life after losing someone they love. He was deeply affected by the death of his older brother Joseph, an event from which family and friends said he never fully recovered.

Couln't agree more with 'Maddie' -- as Gerry calls her in a song (on Night Owl) -- But not only was it the universe he was trying to connect to. Most of all he was trying to connect HIMSELF together and all the things he used drink to; 'stop my head from what I think' (from Night Owl ?). But from what he experienced when he was a child; as the documentary explains concerning his father who clearly had a brutal life and suffered greatly from. Which never got resolved and the immense suffering he endured became the suffering Gerry (and his mother) also endured. Deep in himself Gerry knew what the problem was but used his music to try to release the immense hurt -- and outrage -- he carried; which is why his music was so forensically crafted because musical tones have an EXACT emotional relationship. i.e. certain tones evoke certain emotional responses in ALL of us. (A good example being 'Baker Street' which has the saxaphone letting out chilling screams of what GERRY needed to release IN HIMSELF). Unfortunately whilst musical tones can resonate to what emotions we carry and be a TRIGGER for their expression, it is ONLY in RELEASING the emotion(s) that release from the never ending wheel Gerry also has in his songs (e.g. 'Spinning on another wheel), occurs. That he also has (from memory) in another song; the words: I can't break the chains. Which was true; he couldn't break his own chains; and release HIMSELF and CONNECT UP the unresolved emotions which tortured Gerry ALL his life. And its not the first -- or last time -- Gerry's music has -- and will -- fill me with excruciating agony for what his music says he suffered with ALL HIS LIFE. I miss Gerry's music more than I can say. And the universe has ways of answering what we feel. One day, in the car, I had been playing one of Gerry's albums over and over, till finally I poked the eject button, and got a fright. The song went on playing even after the cassette had unloaded. It would NOT stop. I thought the bloody player was haunted! But then realised I had hit the eject button at the exact instant the SAME song was being played on the radio. Call that coincidence if you like. I DON'T ! !

A singer who never kissed the butts of the big record companies trying to force him to tour North America. He respected himself way too much to sell himself with exposure that way. Many called him a prick for standing by his desire to never tour the United States in mass concerts because he respected his music way more than being commercialized that way.
@serenitynow61199 жыл бұрын
*****He could write and he could be a right prick. The two aren't mutually exclusive. John Lennon, John Fogerty, Chuck Berry…the list goes on. Like many "legends" - they were ambitious and mean with it. It's naive to think any company - record or otherwise - will give you a stack of money and let you do whatever you want however you want. You enter into an agreement and you honour it or your you don't. What about his mate who he left high and dry with HIS contractual obligations? That's not standing up to the company that's abandoning your mate. He writes a song saying how disgusting it is to sit at a table with record executives [and it probably was] yet he'd abuse his sessions musicians mercilessly for no reason. Far more disgusting in my opinion. He left a truly great body of work but let's not call him virtuous for the wrong reasons.

***** tRUE HE DID WHAT HE WANTED::BUT i FIND IT A BIT SELFISH::TO NOT GO AND PLAY FOR THE PEOPLE WHO ADMIRED HIS MUSIC::EITHER HE WAS TO LAZY TO DO IT OR JUST PLAIN SNUBBING THE RECORD COMPANY::EITHER WAY HE ROBBED THE FANS FROM THAT EXPERIENCE:: Michael Jackson hated to tour believe it or not..but he thought about the fans..and when it made sense to him MJ Toured.BUT WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT IT;::I saw Gerry on one of those TV programs where he performed..he is very stationary ..kind of cold how he came over..but his music resonates big time..maybe just didn't like performing...and since he was a perfectionist..maybe he couldn't deal with pungent acerbic remarks. Who knows..at the end of the day..he gave what he can..R.I.P Gerry Rafferty..thanks for the music.

+Garfield Harrison Agree with Bill Bass. Those tours are nothing short of soul destroying in the true sense. It did Michael Jackson so much good didn't it? I would do anything I could to prevent a son of mine from getting into the music business, it is so corrupt. They are right, the music is enough. That's what he was here for, that and his family.
@MrJacksonvill8 жыл бұрын
Stephen Dennis ok but that doesn't mean that young people shouldn't have aspirations to be in the music business. Its changing if you haven't been observing..Of course its a shady business,because it has alot to do with politics. Its corrupt like any business where corporate plays a role in it. That part of it is why I love it..touring is really to fill the Artist's pockets. When you work on a song ,its business..you want to get paid,if you are an artist willing to share your work with the world officially. If you are doing music for your self,which Gerry Rafferty wasn't doing,then why can't you go out and please the supporters of your music. Thats MJ did,..of course he didn't like everything in the business,but he did it..look at how his children benefits from all his hard work. Sure ,Michael enjoyed his life here on earth,don't make it sound like the man never enjoyed it. Gerry Rafferty was just arrogant and not willing to please his fans.Look at Taylor Swift,she can't sing for beans in my opinion,but she is true to her supporters..her music appeals to them. Well call an Ace a Spade.
@PraytheRosaryEveryDay8 жыл бұрын
Garfield Harrison But Garfield, the only thing that really matters in this life is if we live it so we can enjoy eternity. Everything in this world passes very quickly. I think if you could ask Michael Jackson right now what he wishes he could have changed he would tell you, just about everything that happened to him once he got sucked into the music industry for real. It makes me sad every time I remember how little and innocent he was in the beginning. Chasing after lots of money is bad and it almost always demands that you give up what is truly good inside of you.
