Wilson probably doesn't need to sell very many of these in the grand scheme to make enough money to recoup development costs so they can continue to comfortably develop gen 2 and so on. Future generations will likely get cheaper as the production process gets more refined and the product gets closer to being usable as a drop-in replacement for an air-filled basketball.

At first I thought momentum would be the reason why he kept shooting short due to less weight, but apparently the Airless is very close in weight to the regular. Airflow is a factor when shooting with the ball, but it’s not as big as you’d think. It’s more so the actual weight of the ball compared to the regular basket ball. A regular basket ball has more weight to it which allows it to go farther with similar force as you would with the airless. It’s the same reason why a paper plane with the front two corners folded then the wings doesn’t fly, but the moment you fold those corners one more time and make it heavier in the front, it flies.

Eddy currents up against the inside surface in between the holes. Those eddy currents can lower the ambient momentary pressure inside the ball, causing the ball to suction the air it passes through. That's my guess. tl;dr: the drag is on the immediate INSIDE of the ball. edit: so the solution might be a bezel or a spiral on the inner terminus of each individual hole edit: experimentally, i would place 3 equidistsnt fins pointing interior to each hole. my hope would be to direct all the air turbulence toward the center of the ball where it is as far away from the physical ball surface interior as possible. if the turbulence is directed simultaneously from all holes toward the center, the ball could possibly form a zone inside of it that behaves closer to the attenuation of an air mass inside an inflated ball when it is thrown (the air doesn't just sit still inside the basketball, it lumps and pools and jostles around in linear curves compared differentially linear to the path of the ball.)

What’s up with the ball having absolutely no rebound?? Like you said normal hits the rim it’s flying like 10 feet back. That hit the rim and bounce like maybe 5 feet? But on the bounce, they seem like they would respond similar.

The bounce sound plays a significant role; I reckon even professionals would need to make adjustments when using this new airless basketball.

For a ball that never punchers its actually really good all they need to do is make the holes much smaller so there less air going through.

The shoes he's wearing on the court are the Magna(s), from Vivobarefoot. I work construction in them. Amazing shoe.

Pretty sure that there isn't more resistance, just LESS lift. Backspin plays a crucial role in generating lift on a basketball and even a change to the surface texture can affect the amount of lift. A porous ball will never create as much lift as a continuous solid surface, which is why we don't see planes with holes in them to 😁

Eh, cool to see stuff but yeah, the traditional balls are the heart of the sports.

If you tried the Gen1 before then isn't this a Gen2 or higher?, and I've never heard of a leather basketball!.

Airless balls have been around in different ways for a long time. Just haven't gone basketball sized yet. The marketing and product design for this is excellent. Taking an everyday kids toy idea. Making it feel fresh and new. At a much larger size. A wiffle ball is one example from our childhood.

I'd like it more if it didn't have holes. It could be still the same weight and has the same bounce with adjusting the material. But it still wouldn't deflate over time or punctured and deflate.
